  1. Hello, am aware Donald Shannon is strictly in Camberwell but wondered if anyone had any experiences of this agent?
  2. Il Mirto in Melbourne Grove is fantastic. I'd also recommend their takeaway pizzas. Free delivery when you order more than ?10. Never had a bad experience in this place.
  3. E-dealer - any chance you could give some more details about the Nokia scheme you mentioned? OP - so sorry about what happened. I travel on buses ALL the time and to be honest never even think about someone nicking my phone on a not-empty bus in the daytime. Horrific. Hope you're OK.
  4. Hi, Anyone know anything about waterproof mp3 players? I'm thinking about buying some but have read many online reviews and it seems quite a mixed bag. Wanted to hear from someone with some personal experience of them. Thanks.
  5. I had some important post go missing about 6 weeks ago. The letters that went missing were cheques. Cannot really see what use they would be to anyone else. Really annoying and inconvenient getting cheques reissued.
  6. I'd second what people have said about getting the number 40 bus to Fenchurch Street. By far the best plan. However Borough High Street often seems to have building work/ roadworks/ some reason why the traffic is slow.
  7. I used to be a member of Dulwich Hamlets. I thoroughly recommend it - not expensive, often deals are available if you ask. Friendly atmosphere, good music, and the bar downstairs... Used to belong to the council gym on Goose Green. It was OK, although swimming pool pretty minging. I'd be interested to see what happens when the refurb is finished.
  8. Sorry to hear about this. It is as other posters have said an old, well-used con. I observed it sitting in a cafe in Regent Street. A Big Issue seller approached a table of tourists, putting his Big Issue on the table. When they refused to buy the Big Issue, the man left. A few minutes later the tourists realised the phone was missing and were really upset. Shame really as it's a pretty natural thing to do to put your phone on the table - but I suppose you are advertising it to thieves... So sorry this happened to you. And very worrying and sinister if something organised is going on...
  9. It's worth knowing that from Denmark Hill station you can easily get to Ludgate Circus, Farringdon, City Thameslink and Kings Cross St Pancras and further. I only found this out after living here for ages - doh! If the OP actually needs to get to Holborn, worth knowing that the 171 from Camberwell and the 68 (also from Camberwell and Denmark Hill) go to Holborn. Point already made that traffic hotspots tend to be Walworth Road, Waterloo and Strand. In my opinion, I would avoid Victoria area at the moment if you're hoping to pick up the tube. It is horrendous in terms of overcrowding and not worth the bother.
  10. I remember having a cleaning job in a pub when I was 14. The men's toilets were grim - I used to run in, throw some bleach around and run back out. I was then promoted to washing up in the kitchen, and sometimes got to make the odd sandwich. Highlight for me was when the actor who played Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses came in to the pub and I served him. Shame I knew he was getting a frozen microwaved lasagne.
  11. Couldn't believe this when I read it. I've lived in the area for a while and have never seen or heard of any such occurrence at the Sainsburys. How absolutely dreadful. Hope everyone is OK. I'd be very interested to hear the details, as and when they come out.
  12. Acid Casual - I sometimes use this route (walking). Are you able to say whereabouts exactly this incdient happened?
  13. I would state that in addition to the matches, the venue is used for practice several times a week. You frequently hear people shouting (to do with their footie practice) when walking out and about around the area. However I wouldn't have thought you'd hear any noise indoors with the windows shut. If you're in your garden you might hear it though. I quite like to hear them effing and blinding about missed passes or whatever it is they are shouting about - reminds me of when my brothers were younger. I reckon it's an OK area for South East London. And as previously stated, train stations are handy. I recently discovered you can get a train from Denmark Hill to St Pancras - handy.
  14. Read this one with interest. I reflected on my schooldays and realise that I walked to school, on my own, from the age of 7. My school was a very short walk from where I lived. Later, when I went to secondary school, I also walked to school, but the school was a lot further away, a half an hour walk. I must confess, sometimes if the weather was bad, I got a lift either there or back from a parent. However, the reason was not for my safety but because it was raining... My parent would park up in a nearby road whilst waiting for me to emerge from school, causing, I presume, similar problems to those described on this post. I suppose what I'm getting at is that I and my parents thought it was perfectly safe and OK for me to be walking around on my own from a fairly young age (unless inclement weather...) I think something has shifted when parents no longer feel that their children are safe walking around on their own. I wonder if this is an issue all over the country, or just London?
  15. Read this one with interest, thanks everyone for your contributions. I read Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" recently. A school in New York was described that has a unique approach to education (well I thought it was quite interesting and hadn't heard of it before). It's called The Equity Project
