  1. Hello, am aware Donald Shannon is strictly in Camberwell but wondered if anyone had any experiences of this agent?
  2. Il Mirto in Melbourne Grove is fantastic. I'd also recommend their takeaway pizzas. Free delivery when you order more than ?10. Never had a bad experience in this place.
  3. E-dealer - any chance you could give some more details about the Nokia scheme you mentioned? OP - so sorry about what happened. I travel on buses ALL the time and to be honest never even think about someone nicking my phone on a not-empty bus in the daytime. Horrific. Hope you're OK.
  4. Hi, Anyone know anything about waterproof mp3 players? I'm thinking about buying some but have read many online reviews and it seems quite a mixed bag. Wanted to hear from someone with some personal experience of them. Thanks.
  5. I had some important post go missing about 6 weeks ago. The letters that went missing were cheques. Cannot really see what use they would be to anyone else. Really annoying and inconvenient getting cheques reissued.
  6. I'd second what people have said about getting the number 40 bus to Fenchurch Street. By far the best plan. However Borough High Street often seems to have building work/ roadworks/ some reason why the traffic is slow.
  7. I used to be a member of Dulwich Hamlets. I thoroughly recommend it - not expensive, often deals are available if you ask. Friendly atmosphere, good music, and the bar downstairs... Used to belong to the council gym on Goose Green. It was OK, although swimming pool pretty minging. I'd be interested to see what happens when the refurb is finished.
  8. Sorry to hear about this. It is as other posters have said an old, well-used con. I observed it sitting in a cafe in Regent Street. A Big Issue seller approached a table of tourists, putting his Big Issue on the table. When they refused to buy the Big Issue, the man left. A few minutes later the tourists realised the phone was missing and were really upset. Shame really as it's a pretty natural thing to do to put your phone on the table - but I suppose you are advertising it to thieves... So sorry this happened to you. And very worrying and sinister if something organised is going on...
  9. It's worth knowing that from Denmark Hill station you can easily get to Ludgate Circus, Farringdon, City Thameslink and Kings Cross St Pancras and further. I only found this out after living here for ages - doh! If the OP actually needs to get to Holborn, worth knowing that the 171 from Camberwell and the 68 (also from Camberwell and Denmark Hill) go to Holborn. Point already made that traffic hotspots tend to be Walworth Road, Waterloo and Strand. In my opinion, I would avoid Victoria area at the moment if you're hoping to pick up the tube. It is horrendous in terms of overcrowding and not worth the bother.
  10. I remember having a cleaning job in a pub when I was 14. The men's toilets were grim - I used to run in, throw some bleach around and run back out. I was then promoted to washing up in the kitchen, and sometimes got to make the odd sandwich. Highlight for me was when the actor who played Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses came in to the pub and I served him. Shame I knew he was getting a frozen microwaved lasagne.
  11. Couldn't believe this when I read it. I've lived in the area for a while and have never seen or heard of any such occurrence at the Sainsburys. How absolutely dreadful. Hope everyone is OK. I'd be very interested to hear the details, as and when they come out.
  12. Acid Casual - I sometimes use this route (walking). Are you able to say whereabouts exactly this incdient happened?
  13. I would state that in addition to the matches, the venue is used for practice several times a week. You frequently hear people shouting (to do with their footie practice) when walking out and about around the area. However I wouldn't have thought you'd hear any noise indoors with the windows shut. If you're in your garden you might hear it though. I quite like to hear them effing and blinding about missed passes or whatever it is they are shouting about - reminds me of when my brothers were younger. I reckon it's an OK area for South East London. And as previously stated, train stations are handy. I recently discovered you can get a train from Denmark Hill to St Pancras - handy.
  14. Read this one with interest. I reflected on my schooldays and realise that I walked to school, on my own, from the age of 7. My school was a very short walk from where I lived. Later, when I went to secondary school, I also walked to school, but the school was a lot further away, a half an hour walk. I must confess, sometimes if the weather was bad, I got a lift either there or back from a parent. However, the reason was not for my safety but because it was raining... My parent would park up in a nearby road whilst waiting for me to emerge from school, causing, I presume, similar problems to those described on this post. I suppose what I'm getting at is that I and my parents thought it was perfectly safe and OK for me to be walking around on my own from a fairly young age (unless inclement weather...) I think something has shifted when parents no longer feel that their children are safe walking around on their own. I wonder if this is an issue all over the country, or just London?
  15. Read this one with interest, thanks everyone for your contributions. I read Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers" recently. A school in New York was described that has a unique approach to education (well I thought it was quite interesting and hadn't heard of it before). It's called The Equity Project
  16. I'd second what people have said on here. Best of luck, and thanks for your honesty.
  17. I'd love to go to a party where they were playing The Shamen. On the subject of noisy neighbours, it's a toughie. I'd sooner have people having fairly civilised parties with a bit of music and drinking than the sights and sounds of a 24-hour crack house. Having said that, if your neighbours are frequently having these noisy parties, I appreciate that your patience is wearing thin. I'd also be annoyed that I wasn't invited... Maybe have your own party to make up?
  18. Hi OP, sorry you got scammed. It's nice that some posters think it's good to think the best of people, and to help people out where you can. However, having lived in London for several years now, I have to say that I don't give anyone in the street who is grafting my attention, let alone my money. I must have developed some kind of shield, because I don't get asked very often now, while it seems that when I'm out and about in London with friends from other parts of the country, they seem to get hassled all the time. Having said that, if I saw someone who looked as if they were unwell, I would certainly step in to try to help, but that would be me volunteering my time and attention. It's a sad fact of life that in London, I don't trust anyone.:(
  19. Read this with interest. I believe I had an experience with this driver the other day. I got on the bus and sat upstairs. As the journey progressed I heard 2 separate "shouting" incidents and I thought to myself that I may be on Angry Nigel's bus. I grinned to myself listening to the driver shouting, people getting off the bus, and other passengers adding their tuppence worth the the drama. However, the 185 diverted as there had been an accident at Catford. I realised it was taking a similar route to the 484 and pressed the button to get off the bus after Ladywell station. The bus did not stop, and I went to the window and said "I pressed the button, this is my stop". The driver said "does the 185 normally stop here?" I said that I had wanted to get off at Lewisham Park. Eventually, with extremely bad grace, he opened the front door of the bus, with the remark "we wouldn't want you to have to walk too far would we". I thought it was quite funny at the time. Not sure how funny I would have found it if I was having a bad day or was running really late.
  20. Thanks everyone for your posts which I enjoyed reading. I'm wondering if the premises will continue to be a pub in the future, or maybe it will become a trendy coffee shop or restaurant? I hope it doesn't stay as it is in its present state for long.
  21. Hi, I know this is not strictly East Dulwich business, but does anyone know why the Silver Buckle Pub in Camberwell Green appears to have clsoed down?
  22. Not sure whereabouts in ED you're thinking of moving to, but personally I recommend getting a bus to Elephant and Castle and then Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus. This would (all being well) take 45-50 minutes, if you're travelling peaktime which I'm assuming you would be. However, as I'm sure you're aware, tube goes wrong sometimes. Also, traffic on Walworth Road can be appalling. Some posters have suggested alternative bus routes to Elephant and Castle (363 or 63) which don't involve Walworth Road. If I'm not in a hurry I take the 176, but as I'm normally in a hurry if I need to be at Oxford Circus by 9am, I wouldn't chance it. Unless I allowed one and a half hours. Also, as you will discover if and when you move to ED, sometimes during peak times the buses go by the bus stops without stopping because they are full. I have waited by a bus stop and had 2 or 3 buses go by without stopping on many many occasions. That's why I prefer to get any bus going to E&C, then change.
  23. Glad to hear it's not shutting down, as when I saw the "shop for let" sign that's what I assumed. The list with the days' speciality breads is still there. A cafe sounds great - but I hope they have similar opening hours to Neros. I think it's nice if cafes stay open a bit later, till 7.30pm or so, no? A decent cafe would be a welcome addition to the Grove Vale area, which I think is great and underrated.
  24. Read this with interest as I do a lot of my shopping in Dog Kennel Hill Sainsburys. I've always found the staff to be polite and friendly. But if OP is meeting with them - a minor point, I know - could you ask them why they are often out of stock of Total Greek yoghurt, soya milk (as someone else said) and tofu. Feel a bit foolish, but you did ask for issues... I would second what other people have said about getting overcharged on BOGOF and buy one get one half price. However, my Mum taught me to always check my receipt, so I do this always before leaving a shop... Would love to go to a focus group there - anyone know of any focus groups locally? Love doing them
  25. Read this thread with interest, thanks everyone for their views on the subject. I'll throw my twopence worth into the ring - what do people think about security cameras (CCTV) in Lordship Lane? Are there any? Should there be? I know in Camberwell there are loads around Camberwell Green. Not sure what effect it has on crime, but I reckon it has an effect on so-called antisocial behaviour.
