Most quality science fiction tries to be somewhat consistent with speed and distance. I particularly like Alistair Reynold's books, which address the massive problems involved with time dilation when travelling at relativistic speeds. Am quite enjoying Stargate: Universe at the moment, which seems to have a nice blend of visual spectacle and character drama. Do you get that in the UK? Caprica starting with us next week. I've not watched any Battlestar Galactica remake yet, so clearly I need to have a heavy duty weekend of that. Never even realised there was a V remake. I've got no idea how they intend to do that!!!

Well I've heard it used as an insult - as if to suggest that a council estate background made them a better person, more 'real'. I've heard people on this forum talking about flaky clapham blow-in yuppies that use their 'working-class' roots as a weapon in a similar way.

best tactic for deploying central heating
Huguenot replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in The Lounge
Is it possible to run a curtain rail around the stairwell and hang some curtains to stop the heat being lost that way? -
No, to be chippy you would have to bring up your own background, claim it to be inferior and then try and invite someone to disagree with you about it. Being chippy is that whingey 'look how hard domne by I am' thing... I think that's possibly what Mick Mac was particularly referring to with the OP.

That's a great article - the UK definition seems particularly pertinent to the discussion: In [the UK], it also has a meaning of somebody who has a self-righteous feeling of oppression or inferiority which they never miss an opportunity to flaunt. (This feeling is sometimes called 'chippiness' or 'being chippy'.) The implication of looking for a fight is less strong. It more implies trying to gain the upper hand through second-hand moral superiority. In Britain this is often used in the context of a media personality or politician who drones on about their "working class roots" from a position of power and authority.

A few references: resentful or oversensitive about being perceived as inferior or belligerent or touchy

Well, the reasons for bidding for a World Cup are fairly straightforward - short term revenue opportunities and an elevated position on the world stage that reaps long term economic and political benefits. They have a long term pedigree in hosting international sporting events, having hosted AFC Asian Cup in 88, FIFA U20 World Cup in 95, Asian Games in 06 and will host the AFC Asian Cup once again in 2011. The heat is being addressed with a German-engineered cooling system - they won't be indoors - that will make them cooler than say Mexico or US World Cup games. If they're the same as we have here in Singers, they involve an incredibly fine mist that evaporates almost instantly taking the heat out of the air. Brilliant. They're powered by solar energy. There will be booze served in fan zones. I think dismantling the stadiums after use and shipping them to developing countries is an increbile contribution to world sport and third world charity. I can really believe that people think this is a downside?

Yes, paint won't get rid of your problem, it's just taking a photo of your screen so we can have a look and try and identify what the problem is.

The start menu is the menu that pops up when you click on the symbol/button in the menu bar at the bottom left corner of your screen. In this menu will be an item called 'all programs' click on this and you'll get a folder list. Within this folder list will be one called 'accessories', click on this and you'll get a list of the programs, one of which will be 'paint'. Once you have pressed the prt scr button then open the paint application and go directly to 'paste' in the edit menu. Save the file somewhere where you can find it again. Then come on here, start a new post, click on 'attach a file or photo', browse to the location and select it, then click on attach. Bob's your uncle.

I think SMG wanted a screen grab - there's probably a key up the top right hand side of your keyboard called something like 'Print Screen" or 'Prt Sc' etc. Here's detailed instructions. This will copy an image of the screen into your clipboard, you can then 'paste' this into a document which you can save to your computer and attach to a thread.

I'm not too doubtful about the pms - I've had hatemail from 3 or 4 people myself. I say possibly 4 because 1 of them was from a new poster who only registered to send me the abuse - so it could have been one of the original 3 in a flanking maneuver. ;-)

It doesn't seem very fair, but I guess if your media establishment spend 3 months tearing into corruption at FIFA you're not going to make an awful lot of friends. I wonder who the single supporter was? I didn't really expect us to win it, I thought that it would probably be Russia. The reasons you'd vote for England is for the existing facilities, the sporting heritage and the money. It's clear from these votes that the actual criteria for judging was the creation of new facilities, expanding the sport's support base to new audiences, and that cash revenue took a back seat. In some sense a vote for Russia and Qatar is a vote for a new future, a vote for England is about languishing complacently in the past.

It sounds like you may well have malware on your PC. Probably you should get this looked at asap, as you don't know what it's up to. If it starts suggesting virus scanners and such like, don't take its advice. I wouldn't email your document to someone else, as it may have the virus embedded within it - just email it to yourself if you need to.

and Qatar - a fantastic result for world football. Visionary almost.

Souces saying that England haven't won...

Common sense? I think you've totally lost it DJKQ. It's verging on hysterical - and all because I don't think the forum is an appropriate place for this thread. You're even shouting, calling me spiteful names.... I mean, WTF? You've actually invented things about me to hate. Homophobe, woman hater and so on. Each time you invent something about me you fuel this murderous rage you've got yourself into. It's demented. I genuinely don't hate you. b_s is fully aware that I was cross with her repeating nasty things about my wife, a gentler and more pleasant person than you could find.
-
That sounds intriguing Santerme, what kind of business is it?
-
"as I have thought all along, his intent is only to have a pop at me personally" Reference earlier point, it's not all about you DJKQ, but you clearly think it is. That's why you went mental.
-
"On the whole, it isn't women that commit rape, sexually abuse children, use prostitutes and have a disporportionate fear of homosexuality." The fact that DJKQ went nuclear with a completely disproportionate attack on men suggests that the motive behind the thread was never apparent until that point. I contacted DJKQ when she first started the thread questioning its appropriateness and was firmly rebuffed. It started with sex toys, escalated through vaginal squirting to end up with electrocuting genitalia. Entirely predictable. This wasn't an exercise in self-expression, it was gonzo porn with the participants squealing in delighted self-regard. The attack on my wife was quite frankly f*cking outrageous, can you imgaine how hurt she would be? I don't know how this is considered even halfway acceptable. IV and binary-star should be ashamed of themselves. I hope they have the guts and the self-respect to go back and delete the comments. I don't think they will, because they're stupid little children.

Do people really use their phone cameras? I honestly ever see people using a phone camera once a year.
-
Penguin68, I think you've been watching too much telly ;-)
-
Whatever DJKQ. I was referencing IV's earlier comment about women not experiencing orgasm, it turned out that it wasn't true. I can tell from your comment that you think it's all about you. As it happens, it's not. Have a good day.

I've found it slow too Sue. I'm a tech dweeb, so I know that the problem's not with my own connection.

Ladym :)) So what do you do when you meet people, just stare at them and say "require input"?
