  1. I'd be chuffed if someone would take up my recommendation of Robertson Davies' Deptford and Salterton Trilogies. They're absolutely inspired. Also (and unrelated) have a look at Louis de Berniere's books previous to that weepy one about Italian soldiers and Greek maidens. When I'd finished reading those I felt bereft that there was no more.. The War of Don Emmanuel's Nether Parts I think was one of the titles.
  2. Blondie then, Style Council?? I shall put them on right now out of respect. Damn those music dweebs and their other trendy thread.
  3. Shuffle Nod Odd smell of wee
  4. Is this all about androids, because I'm not recognising all of the quotes.
  5. Blinking Blimey. You're all nuts. Those grey boxes are traffic counters. They're not there to rob your children ;-) The reason they have two cables is to differentiate between vehicles in slow moving traffic. They're counting the traffic in order to assess the impact of increased pedestrian facilities on LL. They don't want to turn the adjacent residential streets into rat runs. It's a good thing that someone cares!
  6. Shuffling isn't always the only issue - DDs do have maximum insurable passenger numbers, and no-one should stand upstairs.
  7. sssh
  8. Yep this problem's only likely to get worse as the new east london line gets going...
  9. Incidentally - one for later... How about each user being able to nominate their top 3 local curry houses/pubs/greasy spooons/retailers etc. as part of their own profile? Users could change it at any point just by visiting their own profile and clicking the relevant radio button. To get the current league table in any one outlet type, the system could add up the total points of all users active in say the last month. This discourages abuse through false registration, and allows for real time rewriting of league tables as management change their approach/products etc. It would create a sort of local 'buzz' index which would encourage local retailers to regularly review it, to check the success of local promotions etc. It would encourage local reatilers to regularly promote themselves and their current offers live on the site. It has the potential to be a patentable killer app for a local forum site...
  10. Hmmm, I reckon we definitely need to think about navigation now that we've got at least a couple of well used rooms. I'd like to be able to hop horizontally rather than going up the tree and down again.
  11. Good points Fish - crime is a concern for all of us, and as a victim of a particularly violent crime myself I know how it feels afterwards. I didn't even want to go out the house for a few weeks. However, what most people are observing is that (as you say) it's the alarm that's increasing, and not the crime. The psycholgical burden of fear (or terror) lies mainly in the perceived threat rather than the real one. There's a vast difference between the two. Most people on this site would offer all their support and sympathy to victims of crime, and do anything that helps prevent it. However, I do get the feeling that most people on the site feel strongly that scare-mongering and cultivating a climate of fear is not the way forward. It doesn't help any of us. Please don't be scared, join the community, and reclaim the streets!
  12. Snails. Sneaky buggers. We did big stainless steel planters cantilevered on treated railway sleepers to try and keep the blighters off in an ecologically friendly way. It failed and we went for mega-death tablets. The place looked like something out of a low budget horror film and Bumbalina couldn't go near for a few weeks ;-) Plural of crocus can be either crocus, crocuses or croci - remarkably flexible.
  13. Snorks, maybe the White Stuff place may be up for grabs? All development work has stopped!
  14. Great idea! Perhaps change the name of the other room to General Local Issues / Gossip ??
  15. Just extending the repertoire. The popularity of LL seems quite to have gone to the head of some of the management, who've forgotten the basics about customer service. Hence a conscious decision to investigate other places. Won't be in Singapore full time until July after the wedding. Bumbalina and I are going together, so if anyone wants to buy a house??
  16. Well it wasn't there last night :( Still marvellous tho'!
  17. Kill the planet why don't you! One bloke... ninety rooms with a glass roof. For those who don't get the gag I heartily apologise.
  18. I'm offended by my use of the word 'fat'.
  19. No! Damn you and your piety ;-). First you get us banned from polite society, and then you want to torture us outside the ciy gates. You've had your piddling victory, go and harass fat people. No pikeys there last night, a couple of art students and a couple of pretty girls with alice bands. Don't qualify as inter-toll booth caravanners though.
  20. Went there last night with Bumbalina and chums. http://farm1.static.flickr.com/125/413720041_22020acf83_m.jpg Apologies for crappy telephone photo :-$ Splendid food - big portions, lots of variety, very good vinaigrette on the salad which was perfectly crisp. The Pate was like a light caress during a power cut. Top risotto. Lovely environment, for the relentless and righteous non-smokers the main bar is free of annoyances like me, but for the worshippers of the evil weed there's a well heated and decorated garden marquee that is kept deliciously snug with garden gas heaters. 'Twas like a harem's boudoir in a very nice way! They'll be able to keep it post July with new regs. I especially like that because sensibly none of them are smokers. The team were excellent. Charming, helpful, engaging, committed, prompt and just kinda nice to be around. If you're reading this and have nothing particular to do tonight, then I reckon you should just go! It's on the eastern side of the northern 'peak' of Peckham Rye. The very northern bit - not East Dulwich Road, northerner than that ;-)
  21. Hmm not so classy - Bumbalina thought I was dizzy with luurve, but actually I had vertigo ;-) Dizzy with love now of course!
  22. I love you two monkeys. What wouid you have opened?
  23. Did he go down on one knee? I sort of did, but was a little bit sneaky ;-)
  24. You're all nuts. Those aren't band names, just noise. Repeat after me.. Simon & Garfunkel... :))
