I have recently acquired a kindle and yes you "buy" on amazon and if you have wifi it takes less than a minute - AND classics eg Jane Eyre etc are free- so thats really helpful as you can download a library. The kindle version is often quite a lot less than the paper version "new" but you can't pass it on- however its really light and portable. kindle is owned by amazon so its very user friendly. Hard to recommend which one as some are tablets too. Depends on what you want it for. If you look on amazon for books by favourite author you can select kindle version and see how many there are of favourite author?

  5. I paid for my first plastic bag in a shop in Scotland yesterday. I thought that as it was a wee village shop I might have got away with it. Damn. Anyone else managed to avoid something and finally succumbed?

I dont think this society of ours would work if there were not a set of people over 50 who had been made redundant and still had active and able minds who run around after elderly parents and grandchildren,volunteer and run various charities and offer their time to help others ( their own choice). This set of people - and dare I say particularly women- are often cast off by commercial companies.IMO.
  10. Have you tried an Ecclefechan tart? they sell them in Sainsburys and they are delicious . Only have them in as part of their Christmas range.
  11. Best people to ask are those at university now who went to a local state school and ask what they think- or maybe wait till they have graduated.

  19. I worked all summer on the chemists counter at Boots, Ventnor, Isle of Wight. All I remember of the summer of 76 is endless cases of sunburn and sunstroke from Londoners and Brummies saying " we weren't sunbathing we were just lying on a sun lounger.............." . Dispensing calamine lotion ( plus Ambre Solaire and aspirin).
