Active travel included walking and cycling, walking was 30-40% and cycling 1-4% depending on borough, but yes I totally encourage any proven scheme that reduces cars idling and families owning 2 cars or more and cars used for short school runs. More cycle lanes and more effective and efficient PT is great. As the co-author of the Westminster/Kings paper says ? I support those who complain that sometimes [LTN] schemes provide improvements for leafy areas where rich people live, but divert traffic on to ?traffic roads? where poorer people live, and this is not fair. Reallocation of capacity should be done in a way that supports the most needy.?

We are waiting for it to be peer reviewed (it isn?t a peer reviewed paper) and currently isn?t published. So those other authors cannot comment in a cited article......as yet.

Hi Snowy, if you got to Prof. Aldred?s Twitter account she has given links to her research and you will find her co-authors, affiliates and funding for all her papers. You can also view her Linkdin. Just a matter of some research. @rachelaldred. You can also view on Google Scholar https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?user=jycgGvsAAAAJ&hl=en but you might not be able to read the full articles unless you have a student, medical or university library account? I have through my Uni. She has some excellent papers on encouraging cycling, which I really like, I would certainly agree that more infrastructure for safer cycling is vital to reduce car use.

From her own research Prof. Aldred also commented. ?there?s variation between boroughs: so, five showed the opposite pattern (LTNs more likely to be in more affluent neighbourhoods)?. I think that this is very much the case of Calton, Court, Melbourne in Dulwich. By the way, I have noticed language such as ?contemptuous? ?ignorant? and accusing people of ?assassination of character? and ?attacks?, when critiquing a research paper (that?s what peer review is by the way) . I think when giving an opinion on this thread whether for or questioning the ability of Southwark LTNs to reduce pollution/traffic it would be better to keep things a little more polite. If I have been personally insulting or rude to anyone on this thread or any other, here is my apology.

Between 2012 and 2018 Prof Aldred was an elected trustee of the London Cycling Campaign and on the research paper they cite their (her) conflict of interest as being funded (i.e. paid by) active travel intervention bodies. She is committed and I have a lot of respect for her, but we all need to be aware of confirmation bias in any research. The same collected raw data has been re-analysed by other authors, which point to the negatives of LTNs on residents living on boundary roads, shown to have a higher density population and are areas that are impacted by inequality.

Why are no cycle lanes being put in on East dulwich
heartblock replied to Jakido's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I?m happy to pay part of my road tax and Council tax for cycle lanes, although I would like Southwark to consult residents first. -
-
LCC guidance to councils - i.e. Southwark on LTNs - 'the point at which residents could influence a scheme is reduced',....'ultimately, their voices are reduced to a simple tally'.

Good public transport is key to reducing car use...absolutely agree.

Goose Green councillors - how can we help?

Ella?s mother Rosamund put this report and her support of it up on Twitter. I report the exact words she herself has supported and tweeted...with no edits. So you weep at her agenda, not mine. -

Londoners living, working, visiting and going to school near to a busy road are exposed to far greater levels of air pollution than elsewhere in the capital. This is a particular case for the Red Routes, where, in comparison to an average road in London levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) pollution are 57% higher and levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are 35% higher.1 The Red Routes will also likely be some of the last areas in the UK to meet air quality thresholds as recommended by the World Health Organization. In December 2020, an inquest in London recorded what is thought to be the world?s first case of air pollution listed as a direct cause of death. Nine-year old Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debra, who had persistent asthma attacks in the last two years of her life, had grown up only 25 metres from the South Circular, a busy Red Route. This case highlights the consequences of health inequities; Ella was a young Black girl and research has shown that people who are racialised as Black are disproportionately exposed to higher levels of air pollution.2 Additionally, the legal implications of this case are groundbreaking for moving air pollution policy forward. link https://www.globalcleanair.org/files/2021/03/EDF-Europe-Centric-Lab-Rethinking-Londons-Red-Routes.pdf -
Conrad Poulson, Chief Executive Officer at Huq Industries, said: 'The research suggests that the timing of LTNs and similar measures may be doing more harm than good, as there has been an increase in traffic congestion in London to the point that it's worse now than before the pandemic.'Traffic isn't simply evaporating because there are fewer places for it to go. That's why it's more important than ever for councils to fully evaluate traffic flows and driver behaviours in order to introduce initiatives that succeed in reducing car usage.' Top five London boroughs facing increased congestion since January 2020 The top five boroughs for increased road delays in the capital are currently: 1) Lambeth - 34.7 per cent 2) Wandsworth - 33.9 per cent 3) Islington - 33.6 per cent 4) Southwark - 33.3 per cent 5) Hackney - 32.2 per cent link https://huq.io/indicators/congestion-on-londons-a-roads-30-up-since-pandemic/

Southwark can't be bothered to to do their own research and EqIAs, so they quote manipulated data from a pro-LTN research paper, but even this data when re-analysed does show that disabled, elderly and BAMR residents are more likely to live on 'main' rds than white. Position has changed because it is seen by the Labour Council political suicide to remove LTNs now. So folks...they will stay whatever the 'facts' are. Absolutely no point even questioning or consulting now, they will not listen to core Labour voters only to those they fear may vote for other political parties. We all know it's really about political ambition now. -

I?d support less everywhere, but that isn?t something Southwark is investing in, just easy cheap political greenwashing. Maybe if someone owns a car on Calton Rd they should pay for their second car parked on the rd? Maybe EDG and LL and Croxted could be one way and have a bike/cycle lane. Pedestrianise LL at the top end. See I?d be happy with all those. Southwark couldnt be bothered to pay for ?Boris? bikes, has turned down support for trams and has messed up bike lanes with poor design. If you can?t recognise political ambition dressed up with a bit of greenwashing paid by the Tory Gov, then you lack the political chops... -
It?s so people who paid a lot of money for their property can pretend they live in a village in the countryside instead of a city, but also have all the advantages of living in a city and being able to drive where and when they wish. Although many will actually have a second home in the ?real? countryside. The Labour council know that they will lose their seats to LibDem or Tory if they take out LTNs that are not reducing traffic, just piling it on LL, EDG and Croxted. Of course people in these areas with traffic diverted on them by LTNs, have historically voted in Labour for ever, so probably will again. As Rosamund Kissi Debrah, clean air campaigner, anti-LTN and mother of a child who sadly died of asthma say?s .... councils like Lambeth are one-party states and don?t need to think about the core vote. Same in Southwark, only the areas that have historically been more difficult to win matter. They really don?t give two ****s about the rest of us.

I don't think there is any point engaging with the Council or Councillors if you live on LL, EDG or Croxted. They know that they have a big vote for Labour in these areas, so don't have to try very hard, but they do want to keep hold of votes in the wealthier LTN areas. If they take the LTNs out, they risk losing their seats. It's about political ambition and power. Form Resident Associations and protest peacefully - vote wisely. I'm a very sad ex-Labour supporter :( -

Tessa Jowell centre - do they answer the phones?
heartblock replied to Jules-and-Boo's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I?m not sure it?s helpful for me to outline my current complaint with this service, as currently being internally investigated. If people do have issues, it?s best to bring them to the practice first. If they feel it has not been investigated then contact NHS England. -

I?m trying to be patient with the GP practice based here, but the management team is dysfunctional, which is a shame as the clinical staff (GPS and other health professionals) are excellent. I suggest that if you have any issues you complain to NHS England. -
