Things to do with a 3month old baby????
sunbob replied to checkmeout's topic in The Family Room Discussion

Manual breast pump: What am I doing wrong?
sunbob replied to radnrach's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Have you tried ringing up the seller of the pump? During the first year with mine a rubber bit perished so I rang the supplier (found the details in the history of my Amazon account, useful if that's where you got it from) and they sent the part the next day. Also, if not under waranty is it a part that can be replaced. Buying an individual part may be affordable. (When, after the end of the warranty, my adaptor plug broke and I was panicking the kind person at the supplier 'reminded' me that it also works with batteries!) -
Hi anna r I made the mistake of weaving my way down all the steps and through the park first time I went, but don't worry there is a smoother and shorter way. Go down Anerley Hill (left at the South end of Crystal Palace Parade). Take the left fork to the leisure centre (no road name)take the right fork when the road splits and then the second road at the mini roundabout (2 small lanes very close together)walking down here you should then find yourself walking towards a car park and the leisure centre (just keep going till you see it, and hopefully some other people going the same way). Good luck, it's not as complicated as it sounds.

Yes, we are all ill too. I usually manage to ignore all symptoms, but 3 bits of bad news last week brought my defences down and now I have everything mentioned above. OH is being v helpful and strong with similar fluey symptoms, so thank you to him. The gold medal has to go to DD though, as she has been bravely putting up with cough and cold, lack of appetite, constipation and eye infection for about the last fortnight. Poor little thing :(

Free or cheap things to do over Christmas holidays?
sunbob replied to sillywoman's topic in The Family Room Discussion
"you can have lunch at Carluccio's" A friend of mine was saying that the Science museum has areas with tables to sit and eat your own food, so you could make yummy picnics and save a small fortune at lunch time too (I suppose other museums probably have those areas as well). -
Child friendly xmas service with carols etc ?
sunbob replied to vanthorne's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I thought that they did light the candles at St John's last year, as I remember seeing a little girl in the choir with long hair dangling dangerously close to the flame. Anyway, just to say, there is also a service this Sunday (12th Dec) at 6.30pm at All Saints in Peckham, next to the train station in Blenheim Grove. We've been a couple of times and it is really lovely, cosy and full of families with nice friendly mince pie and mulled wine session afterwards. It's a bit late for our little one, but we are going to try and go. -
Our LO was born at the very end of Jan 09 and had to go straight to hospital. Then, and for the next week, my hubby stuck to the very wise advice of his father "Take your time and go quick". We 'rushed' along to Kings at approx ten MPH (taking all the bus lanes and going through red lights) and a similar speed (without the law breaking) kept him safe at least twice a day for the next 7 days when the place was truly at a standstill.

Goose Green vs. St. John's and St. Clement's

Hello, I was wondering where people not close enough were sent. Why would it be N Peckham and not closer S Peckham, do you know? Thanks. -
Nursing strikes/self weaning in an 11 month old
sunbob replied to Ruth_Baldock's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hello Ruth My daughter self weaned at 15 months when I wasn't expecting it. She had a couple of nasty mouth ulcers, meaning it hurt to feed for a couple of days, but then when they had healed up she wasn't interested any more. I was upset too, especially as her last experience of trying to feed was painful for her. Anyway, she seemed very sure of her decision and quite relaxed about it, so I'm sure it was just me who was upset. It didn't take long for me to cheer up, I hope you feel ok soon too. -
Hello GinaG3 On this page on the Southwark Council website you can download timetables of surestart groups. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/downloads/download/2409/lets_go_guide_summer_holidays The page address says 'Summer holidays' but it does actually have the up to date Sep-Dec ones on there.

We did the NHS classes at ED hospital too. I have managed to stay in touch with one other mum from my class and that is really nice. In the last class we all wrote our emails down and a group of us got together a few times, that group gradually shrunk down to those who were really up for being sociable on a regular basis.

Leaving my 11-week-old for the first time!
sunbob replied to radnrach's topic in The Family Room Discussion
That's a coincidence. I first went out at 11 weeks too. I remember feeling very excited/nervous/wierd. It was really enjoyable going out to do something 'me' (playing in an orchestra rehearsal) and luckily my OH still enables me to do the same each week. It is v tiring, especially at first coming home late to then be up all night with baby, but I think we are all completely knackered anyway (aren't we?) so might as well do something interesting to make us so. -
pushchairs and which is best for what?
sunbob replied to Sally81's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I have found my Baby Jogger City Mini consistently great, from around 5 months up till now at about 21 months. It's really light for pulling up and down stairs to our flat at least twice a day, when laying down you have a lovely view of your baby through the mesh, the turning/stearing is very flexible and easy. More recently discovered benefits are 1. it's very easy to hold/stear with one hand whilst holding LO's hand walking on the pavement (with lots of reminders of 'we're by the road so you must hold Mummy's hand' of course) and 2. the handle is high enough so I can rest LO's bottom on it when she absolutely refuses to walk or get in the buggy and my arm is about to fall off! -
Thank you everyone. Did you put the syringe/pipette a little way in to their mouth on the tongue? As Au'Lait said professionals at the time might not know how to, so as much detail as poss would help me feel better prepared to fight my corner. As 'minder' says you do get uptight and stressed at the time, my OH and I were exasperated at the staff all just doing stuff to our baby without properly talking to us about it and not going out of their way to discuss it with us and come to decisions including us.

Hello, Does anyone have any expertise on this please? Spoon feeding colostrum then milk to a newborn? When our LO was in special care she had a tube up her nose to feed her but someone mentioned that spoon feeding could be an alternative although they had no one to teach it to me on that ward. That is all behind us now, with a lovely healthy 21 month old, but if we do manage to have another baby and the same situation arose I would really like to try this alternative, to avoid the whole tube feeding thing. Thanks.x

You could try and come up with something that is a good reason from the organisation's point of view. Eg. retaining experienced staff, being seen to offer flexibility to people with a caring responsibility at home etc.

Stretch mark cream/oil recommendation
sunbob replied to pilsbury's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I rubbed in baby oil every night from finding out I was pregnant (at 5 weeks) and didn't get any stretch marks. It was a recommendation from my mother, who did the same and also didn't get any, from either of her pregnancies. -
If you think there is any chance that you will be with the same employer for the whole 6 years then it may be an idea to save some of it, in case you really need it over the years.

Part time working Mums facing redundancy
sunbob replied to JMT's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Remember to join your union, which can give you free legal advice and act on your behalf. This kind of discrimination is absolutely illegal and reflects badly on the organisation. A well put, standard letter (written with the help and guidance of or even coming from your union) could help 'remind' your employer of this fact. You could also try a positive approach. How about setting up a working party to show your employer how they could boost their reputation by becoming a beacon of best-practice in employee management/conditions. -
Cot bed duvets and how to keep my toddler warm in winter
sunbob replied to Bishberro's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My mum made our daughter a lovely quilt which was a little to narrow/drafty round the edges, so she got a stretchy fleecy blanket from Wilkinsons, cut it up and sewed wide strips of it down the sides. These are great for tucking in really far under the mattress so hardly ever comes untucked. At the moment we also use a flanelette sheet (turned sideways to tuck in) and in the last couple of weeks we have added a vest underneath her pygamas. Later on in the winter (when it's colder and M is taller!) I forsee asking mum to sew another wide strip to the bottom of the quilt to tuck in at the end of the cot. -
Just a quick note. The area directly opposite the school is PR Park, which is council land not common land (ie they choose when to open it and lock the gates at closing time), the area a little way down the hill with no fences or gates is PR common, which is common land. I hope all the school boys are settling in well to their new school (I think I have now got over the months of my flat vibrating from dawn till dusk when they were digging the foundations!)

Lyme Regis - things to do with toddlers?
sunbob replied to Parsley's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Weymouth beach is fantastic. As children my Sister and I always used to insist on going swimming (or at least paddling) whatever the weather (coldest ever was a snowy Easter day). If you don't fancy getting wet, there's the swing boats (big rope driven swings), trampolines, punch and judy, donkey rides and beautiful sand sculptures. Also, a few miles out on the road out of Weymouth there's the Cresta Run (a big bumpy slide). Hope you have fun! -
Thank you
