Not yet been to Hoopers - but I see from their website that they are showing all the 6 nations games and the lions tour - so it might be a good alternative to the Magdela (RIP) for these events.

Generally our parents are older and wiser - My father used to listen to Makem and Clancey: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=429PaSejZCE Any other little known gems out there in ED? If you know of something, add it to this thread.

Sorry ewan_m but a chain (eg Youngs) is almost precluded from being a gastro pub. In my view a gastro pub almost always has an independent feel. Big chains (youngs/weatherspoons) provide food that is so crap that it feels like a production line.

Poor old "Arfur" was the last of the old brigade. Fighting for union rights - not understanding that the country had to turn. Thatcher did a job that noone wanted and that noone would thank her for, but in hindsight it was a correction that had to take place. Nothing to do with nurses but we all work harder now and GB is more prosperous as a result (present climate excluded)

For Peckham Rose - (whom I support in being objective on this issue - I repeat my earlier post): From Wikipedia: "According to the Oxford English Dictionary, racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups" Being Irish, I'll use myself as an example - please, no offence intended to any other Irish people. Racism is sometimes bad (Irish people are stupid) or good (Irish people are very hospitable and welcoming). If you say either you are being racist (even if you are giving a compliment). If however someone refers to me as "Paddy" I can say its very offensive - but not racist - under the above dictionary defination in any case. I would say the word "Paki" is potentially offensive and may often be said in a way that is intended to be offensive, so if it offends people it should perhaps not be used. However based upon the dictionary definition I'm not sure it correct to say its racist. -

Very good Peckham Rose. I guess I have never been abroad for more than 10 days or so hence not a big issue for me - I can see it would be different if you were going somewhere longer term. -

Ok - I'll review it next time to see how much it costs me - but I don't take out significant amounts - most of the money I spend on a holiday is prepaid hotels etc. thanks. -

fair enough david. There probably is a small charge but if its only a few quid it is immaterial in the overall cost of a family holiday and dont mind paying a small charge for the ease of getting the money out as i need it. -

Yes MP - and as the wife gave you ?20 (minimum spend at WR for lamb) you could drift into the Bishop on the way home, buy 4 quick pints for ?12 and with ?3 left to return to said wife, everyone is happy.

What do people do with foreign currency - Is this for holiday use? I just go abroad and use the hole in the wall with my debit card. Couple of hundred poounds at a time, as needed - does not seem to be a problem - have not really ever checked the rates but I read a few years ago the rates on debit cards were fine - I guess you are taking out local currency so no costs to the banks in holding foreign currency or employing someone to give it to you. Perhaps some people don't like to arrive abroad without local currency in their pockets on arrival, but its always been ok for me - most airports have cashpoints. -
Engelby - Sebastian Faulks I don't read many books sarah - but have recently read Engelby by Sebastian Faulks - I'd recommend this highly - an insight into a person with psychological issues, the implications of which are brought out gradually as the underlying story develops - some review said its his best book to date.

this respect the ref stuff was never going to apply to man united. Rafa's 'good point well made'.

It seems to be the chain pubs, Youngs and M&B, that cannot meet the food expectations in Dulwich. I don't know who owns the Herne or Liquorish or the Bishop but I've almost always been pleased with the food in these establishments - maybe it is because the big chains have a countrywide standard which is not as high as is expected in Dulwich and hence the independent outlets thrive as they set higher standards. The Plough for example: an earlier thread said it was an M&B pub, I would never eat there again after eating there twice about 6 months ago. Its a shame as its at the end of my road but the food is just not good - I tend now to stick to the places that have not let me down. I won't be going to Dulwich Wood House either after these posts, thanks for the warning.

I have just joined too Declan - but my inclusion should not bother you - I only have 800 points.
