That is a theory - a very particular type of theory, in fact: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conspiracy_theory Do you speak to your real life family and friends about your concerns that the London Cycling Campaign has taken over government and has deployed secret operatives to argue with you online? What do they think about it? 🦎 🦎 🦎

East Dulwich road closed?!?
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to raptortruckman69's topic in Roads & Transport
Yes. You probably heard about the Mayor's plan to pedestrianise Oxford St. This, and the associated press conference, was merely a diversionary tactic in The War On Motorists. At precisely 1415 today, squads of saboteurs spread our across London, from Acton to East Dulwich to Seven Sisters. Key arteries were ripped up and tank traps installed to prevent vehicle traffic. The purpose was to bring traffic to boiling point and make people realise that we can't go on this way. Unfortunately, the operation was a complete failure, as traffic in London is already at boiling point, and nobody noticed the difference. -

Most conspiracy theorists think they're being tormented by the Freemasons or Secret Lizard People. I suppose it's only appropriate that the puppetmasters in such a low octane conspiracy theory as this should be...the London Cycling Campaign. 🦎 🦎 🦎 -

Sure - but that's your position whatever the merits of the West Dulwich proposals. This is a thread for talking about the West Dulwich changes specifically, and perhaps what OP would and would not like to see happen there. -
So now the suggestion is that there are so many "lifelong Labour voters" that are so annoyed about the road closure that...they voted for Labour in greater numbers on a larger turnout than the election before? That just doesn't stack up either. It wasn't even a Labour ward before 2018... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulwich_Village_(ward)
-
lol!
-
Apparently there are 2000 locals that are highly motivated by this issue...but not enough to make a difference to their vote, while the party that went balls to the wall on opposing LTNs got a smaller share of the vote. That just doesn't stack up.
-
Source that there are 2000 of them and that they're local...? OneDulwich. 🤔 Odd that if there are so many of them and they are so opposed to the road closure that only 1000 of them bothered to vote for the Tory candidates who stood on an anti-LTN platform. The Tories' share of the vote fell from the previous election. This was in the ward that had the highest turnout in all of Greater London. When the rubber hits the road, opposition to a road closed 4 years ago doesn't actually seem to be motivating local voters (that actually verifiably exist) and it might actually be a vote loser. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dulwich_Village_(ward)

I think that's very unfair. Southwark News (and @Herbie Russell Southwark News in particular) does a good job in covering local news stories, which isn't easy considering how little money is in local news publishing these days. I do think OneDulwich gets a soft ride and a disproportionate amount of coverage considering the tiny number of fanatics that share his views - but to be fair "most people indifferent to road closure 4 years ago" isn't much of a story. Equally, I don't see why Southwark News should not print a file photo that includes protestors' signs repurposing a white supremacist slogan.

Of course Southwark can't make the traffic changes that are the subject of this thread - they're in Lambeth. -
Metropolitan Police have placed two signs at the junction of Gallery Rd/Burbage Rd/Dulwich Village calling for witnesses. I suppose if you were there at the time, it would be obvious what they are referring to, and if you weren't (like me), they don't need to hear from you! Monday 24 June 2024, 0800 hours. Hooray! Three cheers for 20mph defaults! 🍾 🪅 🥳 🎊 🍾 🪅
-
Totally agree, Rockets. Despite Welsh Labour's ability to misdeliver every message and taint every action with its own infighting, the 20mph default has been a huge success and it should be recognised for it. 🙌 As your article mentioned: "Lee Waters, who resigned as transport minister in March, said it was “quite clear” that the policy had reduced speeds and saved lives...recent figures suggested injuries on 20mph and 30mph roads fell by a third in the final quarter of last year..." But its not just a reduction in deaths and injuries. There is also early encouraging news news when it comes to car insurance: "Vehicle damage claims in Wales have fallen by 20% at one leading car insurer...Rob Clark, head of motor underwriting at esure, said: “We can see a clear drop in vehicle damage claims in Wales since the 20mph speed restriction was introduced in September 2023. During a time when we usually see these claims rise, they dropped and have continued to do so in the first quarter of 2024. The restriction is clearly having an impact.” https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/jun/09/vehicle-damage-claims-wales-fall-20mph-speed-limit Course, we've had 20mph default in Southwark for a decade now, so we could have told our Welsh cousins it wasn't going to be the end of the world...

I'm old enough and grumpy enough to remember when Dogstar were the outsider-gentrifiers riding roughshod over the locals, not the salt-of-the-earth insiders driven out by unscrupulous newbies. -

Dulwich Roads: engage brain before posting..
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
Incidentally, inspired by the OP to go and actually read the Dulwich Roads account, I actually found the Tweet that @Rockets seems to be talking about. If I can get the formatting right, it is here: The tweet contains a letter from Dulwich Prep School to parents describing a recent incident in which a parent parked their car across an entrance, moved a school sign, argued with a neighbour and staff, threw a sign into a hedge, and generally acted like an aggro tit. DPS goes on to describe other "unacceptable behaviour" that goes against the school's values ethos like swearing and arguing in front of kids. People can decide for themselves whether that is "call[ing] for pupils to be expelled from schools if their parents park badly"... It is absolutely revolting that highly trained teaching staff are wasting time addressing the shitty behaviour of a few parents. Not the kids - the bloody parents! -

If you want to argue with someone on Twitter, sign up for an account and argue with them on there. Bad tempered personalised arguments seem to cover 90% of Twitter. (The other 10% is fascist memes). -

🙃 #southwarkderangementsyndrome hits its peak: ranting about Southwark not mentioning CPZs in its election materials (clue: Southwark is a council, not a political party) on a thread about an LTN in Lambeth. -
"Roads are dangerous, which is why breaking a traffic law is serious business. At least, that is the case when you’re in a car." I mean, no, it's not. The most basic traffic law is the speed limit, and we know from real life that huge numbers of road users speed and practically no-one gets done for it. In observed 30mph locations, 8% of all traffic was speeding by more than 10%. The way that we detect, investigate and prosecute traffic crime shows that it is not a serious business in this country. Scooters are dangerous to the riders - that's separate and I agree. https://communityspeedwatch.org/downloads/CSW_FP_0_9~Stats_and_trends_-_a_CSW_Online_efficacy_document.pdf

I think that's entirely reasonable. West Dulwich Action Group's claim (mentioned/cited above) is materially different from that. Meanwhile - has anyone been able to identify what actions West Dulwich Action Group wants to take? Do any of them relate to reducing pollution/ congestion/ injuries/ accessibility/ whatever, or is all the action just to oppose an LTN? I could only see a Twitter account and a Facebook page which didnt tell me much. To be fair, I had trouble accessing due to my own ineptitude on Facebook and the lack of a Twitter login - others might find it easier to access info there. -
Dulwich Village CPZ Statutory Consultation
Dogkennelhillbilly replied to Charles Martel's topic in Roads & Transport
I think this is a reasonable question and suggestion, but would point out: 1) the optimal level of charging for parking is where there is 90% occupancy. That's the level at which drivers can find a spot (maximising convenience) but also not overpricing (maximising revenue). Unfortunately people don't like dynamic pricing or overly complicated tariff structures. https://vexpan.nl/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/SFpark-pricing-parking-by-demand-Gregory-Pierce-en-Donald-Shoup-access43.pdf 2) it's only the parking immediately by the shops and restaurants that is being charged for. Rightly or wrongly, Turney Rd, Dulwich Village, Court Lane, Dekker Rd etc are all free still. 3) RBKC charges £1.60-£7.40 per hour for parking. Westminster charges £3.19-£9.24 per hour. https://www.rbkc.gov.uk/parking-permissions/visitor-parking-and-pay-phone/paybyphone https://www.westminster.gov.uk/parking/parking-prices
