  1. It's true, they are sneaky little sods, those sycamores.
  2. It's very kind of you to be concerned that it's my gloomy disposition that means I think the Olympic Games was a waste of money. The fact that the overwhelming majority of respondents in the sports industry (who, after all, have more incentive than most to believe in the magic of publicly-funded sportd events) agree with me makes me comfortable that it's not just me being miserable. To be fair, me being a miseryguts is unarguable.
  3. I was bah humbug then and I'm bah humbug now about it. An immense amount of public money was sprayed with fire hoses into private pockets, and for what? "Overall, just 13% [of sports leaders] felt that the whole legacy promise had been delivered with 61% claiming the Games had failed to deliver the promises made. The biggest legacy failures were identified as delivering a sporting and physically active nation and inspiring a generation of young people to create a sporting habit for life." https://www.sportsthinktank.com/news/2022/07/london-2012-legacy-a-missed-opportunity
  4. Yes, if you're referring to the Calton Avenue SE21 which, err, emergency vehicles can still freely drive up and down.
  5. You know what really slows down emergency service drivers? People driving private cars. Surely then that's another good reason not to allow such journeys to take place.
  6. That's true, but it's a bit less intrusive in Dulwich Park as it's tucked away just one section, and I do have to admit that it is much better run than Gala in terms of noise, litter etc. Brockwell Park closure is VERY intrusive with a huge chunk of the park closed off with massive structures. However, the one big difference there is that Lambeth gets to use the same infrastructure for the Lambeth Country Show, which is free to all and has a wide variety of stuff to interest just about everyone.
  7. This is just irl trolling, surely.
  8. Lovely to see the tin foil hat wearers out with the latest conspiracy theory about a blocked off junction in Dulwich Village. How many tickets do you think you could sell to ravers there - maybe 15 or 20,000? 🤣
  9. IIRC Lime uses "independent contractors" as its "rejuicers", which is to say all these guys will be completely casualised, overworked, and paid as little as possible by Lime, just like Uber, Amazon and the rest. It's striking that the process for reporting badly parked bikes is not integrated into the app, is more complicated, and less accurate than the process for renting the bikes. I wonder if anyone actually reads the reports. Dumping bikes in the middle of pavements is already unlawful. I don't know whether the council has the power to simply remove bikes that are blocking pavements and crush them or hold them to ransom. But they should - it will be the only way Lime ever pays attention to the negative externalities of their own business model.
  10. Maybe yes, maybe no - does it matter if they want the second weekend to target a different demographic? If it's still a private ticketed event, it still means temporary privatisation of the park, fences, noise, litter and traffic. Dulwich Park has "Pub In The Park" which is smaller and "family-oriented" but it's still a private event in a public park. To be fair - Pub In The Park does seem less problematic and better run than Gala.
  11. I'm - I mean, he - is awesome!
  12. Well, exactly. That's why it's silly to say "but it's only three days", because it ain't. On the rubbish: the big stuff does tend to be removed, true, but the seven billion fibreglass cigarette ends and small plastic bits are a different matter. I'm in the middle on this: if the council is getting enough money and if the site is actually properly cleaned, I'm okay with it. But I don't live so close to the site ghat i get bothered by the sound: if I can hear it, I just crank up my own hifi so my neighbours and I aren't disturbed by rubbish doof doof music.
  13. The closing off of the park is not just 3 days, and the rubbish left behind lasts much longer than 3 days too.
  14. Interesting opinion piece from someone that actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to the economics of running a small restaurant: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/may/29/running-a-small-restaurant-britain-sales-covid-inflation
  15. Tell me more about the economic boost this festival provides to Peckham vs. the loss of amenity, the environmental damage, the cleanup costs, the noise pollution, and the piss...
  16. They don't take them anywhere to recharge them. A guy in a little car just changes the batteries. I watched one last night pull up, park on zigzags, swap a couple of batteries, and then drive away on the wrong side of a separate crossing. He did not move any bikes into the bike parking spot while he was there...
  17. Or, you know, Lime and the users could just not act like giant fanny when it comes to dropping off the bike. That's another option.
  18. It is if you're in a wheelchair. 🤦
  19. I do use them regularly and I think they're great...until the scumbag multinationals and fuckwit riders dump them in stupid places. It's not just ugly or inconsiderate, they're dangerous for people with restricted mobility, people with prams, kids, wheelchair users... This isn't just hypothetical - at the risk of repeating myself, last week I personally moved a bike out the way because a geezer couldn't get down the pavement in his wheelchair because of it.
  20. "the proposal to close Turney Road was a “false flag"" One Dulwich previously made friends and influenced people by adapting the anti-black slogan "All Lives Matter" as "All Streets Matter". Now it seems they're going full Q-Anon with their references to "false flag" operations. Will the next newsletter focus on the illuminati, the Gold Standard and ley lines?
  21. No - all I can see in the photo is a motorbike and car inside a red circle i.e. "No Motor Vehicles". I can't read the text in the photo.
  22. What does the road sign in the middle of the photo say?
  23. Went to Lordship Lane for first time in a couple of weeks, and it certainly looks like Lime is saturating the area by leaving bikes around here. I cannot believe there has been a sudden and huge increase in the number of riders dropping them off at the end of a ride.
  24. If you see bikes in clusters - it's because vans have dumped them there overnight. Idiot riders will dump 1 or 2 - not not 6-10 all at the same isolated spot.
