  1. They've got a similar scheme going on in Ambridge (on the Archers). Their's is called TEA (Transition Equivilent Ambridge) However there seems to be a problem with IOU's creeping into the monetry system and the take up of the currency in the neighbouring village of Penny Hassett (which I think is the Borsetshire equivilent of Nunhead)
  2. Not sure if anyone saw it, but in the last issue of Private Eye the architecture correspondant, Piloti, had a few disaproving words against the knocking down of "Friern Road" school which I can only imagine is the wreck on the site of the new proposed boys school. In this weeks isssue he goes on to berrate Lewisham council for their vaccilation over the future of Forest Hill Pools (the oldest swimming pool in London apparently) and compares it with our own councils positive attitude towards rennovating ED baths (has this been started yet?) Is Piloti a local? Does he read the forum?
  3. Maybe PK, but the leaflet was all about electing Val Shawcross as our representive on the GLA, not about the mayoral election where it probably holds more weight
  4. Last night I received a election leaflet from Val Shawcross, the labour candidate for the Lambeth and Southwark GLA seat. Right on the top it had a graph, apparently from a MORI poll, showing labour on 41%, Tories on 40% lib dems on 14 and greens on 6%. The lib- dems had a massive arrow next to them saying "cant win here" Yet on her website it says "In Lambeth and Southwark just a 3% swing would see a victory for the Lib dems" http://www.valshawcross.com/index.php?id=378 We'll ones wrong and I guess as Southwark council is run by the lib dems the election leaflet is trying convince people not to go out and " waste" a vote on the lib dem's Is election advertising treated the same as normal advertising? Isn't there some form of penalty for making misleading claims?
  5. this is quite possibly one of the best things I've ever seen and raises drinking into the athletic pantheon it has previously been barred from. I'm in. What time does it start?
  6. Beef, You're wrong. Cadburys has at least 2 factories in the uk, bournville and worcester. Closing the bristol factory is rubbish but they still do a lot of manufacturing in the uk, more than any other confectioner i believe. They were also founded on an ethical, for the time (Quaker), basis and still donate a lot of money to the communities they work in. I agree with you 100% that we should try and keep our manufacturing base which is why i try and buy products made in britain
  7. there's a good toy stall there with loads of great stocking fillers
  8. Hiya does anyone know what time the CPT quiz kicks off?
  9. I'm posting from Tokyo Has any one posted in the EDF from further away? In my defence it's 0150 here and I've been drinking Sochu, which was used as a disenfectant in the 17th century, all night.
  10. I seem to remember that the Lib dems want to replace the council tax with a local income tax. To me this seems much fairer. If you have 3 wage earners in a house then you contribute more than than a pensioner living on their own. Old people can be left with a "valuble" property but no income. We dont ask the people who live nearer the coast to pay more for the Navy ergo....
  11. I think the green's great. I had my wedding reception there a couple of years ago - top notch food for about 120 and excellent staff who couldn't do enough for you.
  12. I recently sold my place on www.propertybroker.com Found it was reasonably easy but would echo Tommys comments above re time wasters. If you do recieve an offer you need to get the purchasers to book their survey quickly ( 7 days is reasonable) that way they've got ?500ish invested in the deal already. Well worth the hassle for 1.25% of what your selling it for. good luck!
  13. I don't understand where this belief that "..they (Nero) have tidied up the street.." comes from. Since Nero opened the only new business on the same block has been the green cookware shop which I'm unsure is related to the presence of a cafe. Further down the street Green and blue have expanded their bar resturant/wine shop which must be at least in partial competition with Nero. Can anyone give me an example of a business that has moved into east dulwich because of Nero or another example of how their, seemingly unauthorised, presence, has a social/economic/rejuvenating benefit to lordship lane? Does this exceptional effect of their shop on the local area excuse them from the rule of law? I dont think it stands up. I have no problem with cafe nero, wetherspoons or anyone opening up anywhere as long as they respect the proper planning process which protects us all.
  14. You can make general reccomendations to the planning inspectorate who will rule on whether Southwark have enforced the rules properly. You can do this on T'internet at http://www.pcs.planningportal.gov.uk/pcsportal/ShowDocuments.asp?Case=COO.2036.300.2.7427893&docView=ALL There is another related planning case which concerns the flat above Nero. I understand that Nero errected two large air conditioning compressors (again without planning permission) near the bedroom of the upsatirs flat. This I understand causes a lot of noise nuiscance to the residensts both night and day. This all came up at the community council meeting a couple of months ago. The date for commenting on the second case has already passed. If they want my business they need to play within the rules.
  15. Does anyone know if the council has the ability to levy a fine for this trangression? I would imagine that it is simply a matter of closure under the original planning notice. I'm afraid I support the closure, if the rules aren't enforced big companies will ride rough-shod over the decisions of, lets face it, our elected representatives. We can vote the council out, more diffcult to get rid of a multinational
  16. The council have announced a ?5M redevelopment of the east dulwich pool. see this link http://www.southwark.gov.uk/Public/NewsArticle.aspx?articleId=21458 I remember this being the ED Lib Dems big policy in the local elections. ED voted for 3 Lib Dem councillors and seems we've got a bunch of money to be spent on our pool. Could this be a case of " local councilor in promise delivery shock"! Not sure when the work starts, perhaps they've been waiting until the peckham pool was re-opened
  17. My Wife's just come back from a night out at Green and Blue with some mates. Along with her wine and food she asked for some tap water, the waitress refused saying they only sold bottled water! I always thought it there was some legal obligation for licensed premises to provide tap water free of charge. Does anyone else know if this is correct? Does it only apply to pubs? whatever the legal obligations, I think it's a bit tight not to give people who are paying good money for wine and food a glass of tap water. There are a lot of environmental objections to bottled water: http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/article344959.ece I can only imagine it helps some people pretend they're in France or Spain when they're in SE London. last time I was in green and blue they were making a big deal out of selling "enviromental" hessian shopping bags - not a very consistent message.
