  1. Amusingly, Hoser, my mates have L.A.'s first 'Gastro Pub', called 'The Village Idiot'(www.http://www.villageidiotla.com/). They spent a long week The Bishop, researching & developing. Cheers for your comforting viewpoint SteveT, however what the press continually fail to report is The number of 'new build' Bars, Restaurants and Pubs that are opening. That along with the fact that the one thing nearly all the closing pubs have in common is that they haven't changed their offering for at least 3 years. Can't continue the chess theme as I sold The Castle years ago and don't wish to be associated with it in it's current guise. I like The Actress...
  2. Hugenot, have you read the thread ? Do you have a forum for where you now live ?
  3. Nice observation Sazzle.. The cap fits. Thanks Reds & Mattbrownis. The idea (planning and licensing permitting)is to put in a Horseshoe bar (more social), move the toilets downstairs to increase trading upstairs. Show the better offerings from Sky Sports down one side (still chewing this over as Sky costs ?12k P.A. for the site). Design wise, capitalise on all the natural light and the big outside area which is a suntrap. Put in a further three 'hotel' rooms bringing the total to eight. Foodwise will be a very different offering from The Bishop but not a Gastro offering a la Palmerston & Franklins... More news at 11....
  4. Did you think 'The Bishop' was a right name ?
  5. hamlet [ˈh?mlɪt] n 1. a small village or group of houses 2. (in Britain) a village without its own church
  6. Pam50, I am quietly confident that The Victorian Inn will be open by June. If you want to email me directly a little nearer the time we can discuss it further. [email protected] Sue and Sazzle, I may be opening a can of worms (which is normally the case when I discuss pubs on here)... Do you think East Dulwich is more of a Town than a Village ? And I'm talking about 'feel' not definition here.

  8. They did do a deal with that 'Scott Chap'... http://www.capitalpubcompany.com/ bought The Bishop and The Clarence from me. I am now a shareholder of them. I still oversee The Bishop and The Clarence as well as The Merchant in Battersea and The Florence. I sourced The Uplands & The Wishing well, which we have also bought. If you take the time to look at the corporate section of our website, you will see we are not a greedy behemoth of a pub company. We are unbranded, with Managers who have a massive amount of autonomy to run their sites. You will probably know some of our other pubs... I will be be designing them from the ground up to fit a couple of gaps I see in the local market. The working plan is The Uplands becomes The Villager with 8 boutique B&B rooms above and The Wishing Well reverts to it's original name 'The Victoria Inn'. The Victoria will have a kid's room away from the bar with smart B&B rooms above. If anyone has any specific questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to email me directly (I will answer quicker than via the forum). [email protected] cheers
  9. They should both have their own identity. The Bishop, The Clarence & The Florence are all run with the same ethos but have completely different identities as this is something a pub tends to get from it's regulars. We don't intend to match the Herne's play area as that is in their garden. After consultation with the pub's next door neighbour, who raised concerns about converting the external rear area into a garden, we decided it best for the immediate neighbour if it was a kid's room. Cate, The Florence is in Herne Hill, 133 Dulwich road. We do Symond's reserve cider on draft with Aspalls in a bottle. Well behaved kids & dogs are welcome in all the pubs.
  10. Dear Mick Mac, The Wishing Well (journey's inn) went into receivership. This could have been bad management, ownership or that the area demands something a little more forward thinking. I am not trying to compete with The Herne (Jamie is a great operator and The Bishop is not in competition with The Palmerston and they are 100yds apart as opposed to approx a mile between them) There is no 'snobbery against showing sports'. The ever increasing cost of Sky Sports prohibitive. The pub is aimed at Bellenden road/village locals, primarily. New and old locals alike. Why would I try to cannibalise The Bishop's trade by opening another one ? Can you give me you interpretation of 'packaged product' ? Sean, target date is to start work in 2 weeks time with a 5-6 week turnaround. Taper, yes similar split of kid friendly & adult only. We are also building a Kid's Pavillion at the rear of The Florence to cope with the volume of families visiting. There has been a huge increase in families in pubs ever since the smoking ban and it is difficult to keep a balance. Even people who have children and are drinking in a pub without them would rather not have to see or hear them (customer views not my own). The press is always quoting that 5-6 pubs a week are closing but never delve into the little known fact that the pubs that most that have closed have not changed their 'offering' in the last 3 years. e.g. The Wishing Well. The Castle & The Prince Albert are owned by the same company from who we have also acquired The Uplands (which will have Sky Sports) Please keep your comments coming... Scott
  11. Ah, the speculation... The company that I am a shareholder of has acquired The Wishing Well. The plans for it (licensing and planning permitting) will clearly please some but not all : It will return to being The Victoria The bulk of the woodwork and detail that is in the main bar will stay. Giant screen and 'Corrie' to go.. Strippers not coming. As The Bishop serves it's neighbourhood, The Victoria (Lodge/Tavern/Inn) will attempt to serve it's. In no attempt to woo Sue alone, there will be an extensive range of real ales. Vastly improved food offering with Sunday roasts aplenty. Pool table to go two bar areas to be made in to one. Bed and breakfast in the upstairs rooms (not rentable by the hour as used to be the case) Last but not least and sure to ruffle a few feathers...one area of the bar will be kid free and one family friendly with a purpose built Children's Room. I welcome any questions but not over keen on the word 'hate'. Cheers Scott
  12. Anybody see two youths in the area of the Uplands, shortly after 11 last night ? They would have been carrying knives, cash & a CCTV recorder...
  13. Thanks for your kind words *Anna*, message me privately with your details and you get yourself a free ticket for NYE at The Bishop. This year will be the same ?10, same DJ, dancing on the bar but no confetti, streamers or bangers (as after four years we have decided to make life a little easier for the cleaner New Year's Day) HOWEVER there will be lasers, disco ball & a smoke machine. The aim is to make the evening the complete opposite of the millenium anti-climax, 10 long years ago...
  14. by all accounts a man went in to The Escape bar, poured petrol all over the bar and ignited it (and himself in the process).
  15. the Staff' owner was nowhere to be seen... Staff' attacked Pug, female owner tried to pick it up and got bit by the Staff'. Male owner then intervened and at one point had the staff' hanging from his forearm. The Staff' owner was still nowhere to be seen. I called Police and Ambulance. Both turned up very quickly. Both owners taken to hospital and the Ambulance dropped the Pug home (unscathed). Although the attack took place inbetween the Bowling Alley & Picnic area the police found the owners over by the Nunhead side of the park. Whilst the owners were being treated we could here another attack close by. The Staff' and it's owner then came around the corner to be greeted by a pair of policeman.
  16. Does anyone know the couple who were attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier on Peckham Rye, yesterday morning. They have a Pug called 'Fergal'...?
  17. Their brief is be engaging and friendly (to a point) at all times, to all people. See how smiley they'll be today after they have all been made to read this thread at a pre-service meeting. Please keep me posted. Scott
  18. Please enlighten the readers what you do for a leaving Jeremy, then perhaps we can swallow a bitter pill and criticise your achievements....
  19. A business loan. Basic legal measures where taken.
  20. Does Adam Shea co-owner of Pickwick Estates owe anyone else ?42k ? If so please contact me whilst proceed with bankruptcy proceedings.
  21. It's refreshing to see that the forum hosts as many colourful characters as E.D. itself... Cheers to the majority of you.
  22. would you mind giving me a description of the barman, please ?
  23. Howdy y'all. I have sold The Bishop into 'The capital Pub company',of which I am a shareholder and Operation's Director. The operation will not change at all, we make subtle changes on an ongoing basis. Neil will still manage, Clarence and I stay put and the weekend nights will hopefully remain as painfully busy. I don't agree with the 'tw@ts' observation We're closed for three days from today to finally paint the front section. All the leather banquettes & booths will be changed in a couple of weeks time. Long overdue but considering the volume of trading for the last four years it hasn't done too bad. Can't do much with floor short of stripping the whole pub out... A head wil roll for the 'scolding' spelling mistake.
  24. the bishop open for wet and dry refreshment from 1pm.....
