Yes, it's a bit like being a shift worker trying to meet a new partner, really. And once you have a toddler, you can never have a conversation anyway! But it is well worthwhile making a good friend, the sort of person who will come round when you and your kid have been up all night with him puking, and help you get the house straight then watch him while you nap... the sort of friend when you go to your house you feel at home making yourself a cup of tea, and load their dishwasher while you're in the kitchen... I have two friends like that with children same age as my son no 1, but neither live locally or work part time.
