  1. Renata what about thd opening date for thd playground - us it still July and will the one o'c club have access? Thanks
  2. I wonder whether there may be a trend for other allergens similar to gluten in the Swedish study ... Which actually recommended not that it be introduced early so much as it should be introduced while breastmilk wAs still the milk being taken http://www.celiac.ca/Articles/PAB%20breast%20feeding.html
  3. I think your 'insider' might be jumping the gun a bit to say there is 'soon to be a wholesale overturning of the guidelines re weaning' given that the study is still recruiting! Shame that results in 3 years or so are too far away to be much help to us now I don't think, personally I would take a punt on the peanuts, just yet! ( though I must confess I ate some sate sauce when I was pregnant with the twins... I just couldn't help myself!! No ill effects seen, if you exclude a proclivity for naked serenading of a radiator ( I kid you not!)
  4. Here you go:http://www.kcl.ac.uk/newsevents/news/newsrecords/2011/01Jan/Familiesneededforchildhoodallergiesstudy.aspx It's only started, it's going to run till 2014 I believe There won't be any results until the first children enrolled reach the age of 3 This is a properly thought out and substantial research project Will be very interesting to see the results I had a cows milk protein allergy as a child ... Grown out of Did delay introduction of dairy ESP for child no 1 who seemed to escape it And has never had eczema despite strong family history ...
  5. Yes jennyh, that's the st thomas trial isn't it? Though I think it's not going to end for quite a while yet They were recruiting from atopic families not so long ago And I guess from families who have a peanut allergy
  6. Nm its usually term time, with other more varied activities on in the holidays
  7. I sometimes have to laugh otherwise I would cry! Thinking of running through the house yesterday with an explosive bottomed baby, sluicing him Under the bath tap then he slipped and banged his head Just as I am juggling one slippery bawling baby I have a toddler holding on to each of my legs, each trying to get my attention for their various projects I think it was a missing hand bag and a certainty I had promised hammy dodgers all round So.. Mad laughter ... Present and correct What I am missing is my memory, my attention span and my ability to relax I am always spotting thIngs that need to be done and forgetting I planned to watch a tv programme or hAve a cup of tea
  8. The school will want to ensure a balance of subjects if they want to score well on the English bacc measure...

  10. There was some interesting research by the fsa into parental attitudes towards advice (about formula Prep) And they identified the following 'types' 'avoiders who actively avoid issues in order not to have to change habits pragmatists who only change habits if they believe opinion is widespread headline reactives who tend to display concern which is often short-lived, resulting in a fairly superficial impact (NB pragmatists and headline reactives display similar needs and were jointly termed mainstream for the purposes of this research) purists who are more cautious and knowledgeable than the other types so are more able to decide on what action to take as a result' I freely admit to probably Thinking a bit TOO much which must make me a purist! Do you recognise yourself, and why? I do a lot of optiOn appraisal etc for work - not sure if that affects my parenting or both are just signs of my personality! http://www.food.gov.uk/science/socsci/ssres/ssarchive/ssarchivesafety/infantformula
  11. Marvellous Mavis,. as has been dicussed endlessly.. that was not new research but rather the highlighting of those items within a large body of evidence that warrant further research. (A cynic might link it to current discussions regarding the labelling of baby food as suitable for 4m or 6m) The important one in that was re allergy issues (though advice has already been issued by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition restating the previous advice re gluten http://www.sacn.gov.uk/reports_position_statements/position_statements/sacncot_statement_on_the_timing_of_the_introduction_of_gluten_into_the_infant_diet_-_march_2011.html) and I believe a long term study is beginning at St Thomas's focussing on the optimal timing for families affected by atopic disease. Despite the press reports, there is nothing significant enough to require any change to current advice.

Which is what I replied to back at the beginning, having experience of it... But somewhere in the middle the discussion turned as it often does to 'you know your baby'abd 'never did us any harm' which I think needs to be balanced by the evidence regarding diabetes etc later in life ... Can you rely on your own own observations when some of these decisions may have effects that aren't seen till so much later? Anyway, to recap my post right back at the start, I found early weaning quite a hassle and never found any advantages Child has suffered no disastrous consequences ( maybe he was destined to be fussy) but now there is research to back later weaning I feel happiest going with the updated advice It's not something where I have strong enough personal preferences to make a decision otherwise But it all comes down to making an informed decision By all means make your own decisions, but preferably based on facts!
  13. I must admit I don't understand why people dismiss actual evidence. But it's very common in the world of mothers I have found! I don't think I would call it frivolous I find it very puzzling, tbh I suppose we all have our mindsets and it can be hard to understand why others act as they do I don't have a problem with what other peoPle do, but I dont like to see misinformation because peoPle are vulnerable to peer pressure
  14. There we differ zeban I don't have a mum, but if I did although I am sure she would have much to share with me, i would still listen to the research/ evidence Guess I am a bit geeky! Think we have had thus discussion before about instinct vs scientific evidence!
  15. It's nice for a mini day out and good for lunch too!
  16. Advice changes usually because of improved research Part Of the reason fog recommending later weaning now is because of a link to reduced diabetes, heart disease and obesity in adults I don't know whether there is just a correlation between early weaning/ lower socioeconomic groups/unhealthy diet after weaning or whether there would still bs an increased risk even if the weaning is on to a healthy diet, but I prefer not to tSke risks so I have stuck to the 6m since it wS recommended Child no 1 is happy and healthy but I would hate to think that something I did or didn't do had an effect on the adult health of my children Or I mean to sat, I suppose, I am very aware that so much I do will affect their health and wellbeing lifelong, that its scary I just do my best to make informed decisions with the best and latest information available to me ... All any of us can do, really
  17. Is one where my new hairbrush (bought just this morning to replace one that mysteriously disappeared) would not have already found its way onto the shed roof...
