Haha no... at least I bloody well hope not! you'd be surprised at what it is in though... meat and vegetarian products, baking powder, starches, chips, gravies, sauces etc... it's so inexpesnive and bulks things out so effectively - like sugar (don't get me started on that!) :-) -

Oooooh spooky, slightly stomach turning, a little disturbing yet highly possible huh?! I guess, given enough time, if all you've eaten is manufactured meat you won't know any different eh? The problem is that humans can actually live on a diet that consists entirely of animals... so long as you eat the fat and organs... if you just eat the lean protein then you will die. So where would we get our fat from? Could they synthesise that? *shudder* -

There is no evidence that fat or cholesterol causes heart disease. Fat, particularly saturated fat, has been demonised and replaced by harmful polyunsaturated fats. saturated fatty acids are very stable, they're the fats we store on our own bodies. Unlike polyunsaturated fats (e.g. vegetable (seed) oils) they do not oxidise in the same way and cause damage to our bodies. If you want to read more here's an article by Barry Groves: http://www.second-opinions.co.uk/fats_and_cancer.html who wrote a fantastic book called Trick and Treat other than artificial trans fats, what you have to look out for is the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3. As we like to stuff our cows full of grains (NOT their natural choice of diet for them) the ratio of omega 3s to omega 6s drops significantly. Grass fed/finished cows have higher omega 3 and CLA levels as well. They also have less incidence of e coli which means the meat doesn't need to be rinsed in ammonia (pleasant). regarding the welfare of animals during their short lives and at slaughter, it's a shame that so few people are bothered by the treatment of the animals. Do people really not make the link between the quality and chemical composition of the meat and the way the animal is reared and treated? If an animal is stressed and terrified leading up to and during slaughter, all those steroid hormones (adrenaline, cortisol etc) are leached into the flesh of the animal - for you to then eat. I'd highly recommend watching the films Food Inc and Fat Head if you want a better understanding about the meat you put into your body (that then becomes part of you) and how you may have been mislead into thinking that a high carbohydrate and low fat diet is in fact in any way beneficial to your health. If you want to purchase grass-fed beef and lamb and outdoor reared pig and chickens then there are a few sites that you can buy from like: http://www.athleat.co.uk http://www.westingourmet.co.uk Waitrose also sells grass-fed beef. It's not just about the welfare of the animal (although I do think that's important as I feel a hell of a lot happier eating meat from an animal who didn't live in terrifying dark, cramped conditions, knee deep in faeces being trampled on and finally meeting their end in a horrifyingly poor and stressful manner), it's about how their treatment and diet affects the structure of the meat you then consume. It's worth being consumed. Oh and we should all be a lot more conscious of the amount of grains, particularly wheat which is in EVERYTHING (trust me, it's utterly ubiquitous, read the back of food packets and you will see, terrifying considering the fact that it's been so genetically modified that it barely resembles the relatively harmless grain it was 50-100 years ago!) that we consume as it's a high carbohydrate diet that raises LDL and lowers HDL. If anyone is interested I have a great number of site links and books I could recommend. A lot of which are mentioned here on this page: http://chriskresser.com/heartdisease :-) Tara -

lol penguin, I wish you'd posted this on the vegan thread as I've just said something remarkably similar if a bit more succinct (though your version sounds better ;-) ) it's worth noting that fat played a huge role in our encephalisation too regarding this thread - what a fabulous idea! We've recently discovered the butcher on northcross road on saturdays and are enjoying our organic roasts... definitely up for exploring alternative cuts (we had some lovely shin steak in a slow cooker casserole the other day from Sainsbury's, dirt cheap too for a huge hunk of beef!) and alternative meats too, Le Chardon does a lovely Ostrich steak but I've not seen anything more exotic (I have to order my kudo and sprinkbok biltong and droewors online). Also, does anyone know where I can buy grass-fed beef? I know a few online sites like Athleat and Westin gourmet that deliver meat boxes but it would be good to source non-grain fed (i.e. healthy fat ratio) beef from somewhere more local -
Any beekeepers in the area?
tarafitness replied to tarafitness's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
wow, I didn't expect such a great response, thank you all for your help :-) Tara -
Bit of an odd question perhaps but I've just attended a beekeeping workshop today run by Brian McCallum from http://www.urbanbees.co.uk/ as my wonderful company is one of a few in Victoria who plan to install hives in the outdoor spaces we have available (mainly the roofs). with the honey bee in a steep state of decline in the UK I think it's wonderful that all these urban bee colonies are being established and I feel privileged to be able to become a part of it in the future :-) Anyway, I was just wondering if there were any Apiarists in ED or close by with working hives that I could visit. Or just who could share some info/tips etc before it all kicks off here (won't be realistically until the Spring as we all need training and equipment!) Many thanks Tara

my son was on an errand to the co-op the other day and saw a fox attacking a cat on Crawthew Rd so he went over and shooed it away... then it went for him! He kicked it in the head, and it ran off. Problem solved. Bit concerning though, what if he'd not been a big teenage boy and a little old lady instead. Love foxes generally, but they really are getting quite a menace!

Worlingham is a lovely road, it's fairly quiet as, unlike crystal palace road that runs parallel - it's not a through road. if you live on the right (if you're standing with your back to Goose Green and looking up the road) you will probably have a nice garden that gets all the sun in the evening. if you live on the left you will most likely end up with a postage stamp sized one that only gets sun in the morning, ho hum ;-) house prices are quite variable, we got ours for a fairly good one as it was previously a bedsit and basically a right mess, great if you want to get your foot on the property ladder in a nice area but I can safely say I'd never do it again, too much stress, especially if you have neighbours who want you to continue living in squalor and not attempt to do any work to your property! houses are quite big though but yes, they lack insulation so walls are thin and you can hear your neighbours if their TVs are on loud! great road though, lovely plum trees :-)

New to East Dulwich, looking for top tips!

buntysammy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hello! Hello and welcome! :-) > I have just moved to East Dulwich from Hoxton and > I am looking for top tips on where to eat, For best pizzas choose the Actress or the Gowlett. Locale on east dulwich grove do nice pizzas too and half a half price steak night every Monday (v nice steaks too) Best Indian - Swadesh and Dulwich Tandoori Tapas - No22 on Half Moon Lane French - Le Chardon Thai - LomBok on Half Moon Lane > drink, Pubs - plenty to choose from but firm faves are the Bishop, EDT and the Gowlett who have a great 'Lucky 7's' night where you can turn up with your 7" vinyl and play DJ for a few tunes - always a good night that :-) For cocktails you can't go wrong with Liquorish, very tasty and potent drinks, plus the crowd isn't all 18 year olds which is how some of the other late night bars can feel. > socialise, do sport, listening to music, There's a gym on Crystal Palace road with a nice pool, Peckham Rye Park is great to run and exercise in. There's a female netball team that meet in Dulwich Village too and various football kickaraounds and social events advertised on the 'what's going on' section of this forum. > get a great Sunday roast, interestingly Le Chardon do a really nice roast but I must say The Vale on Grove Vale do a really well priced one and plus it's a carvery so you can load up on potatoes and veg if you're feeling particularly hungry ;-) > a fab chinese takeaway, not tried personally but I hear that Hong Hong on Grove Vale do decent takeaways > see some art Dulwich Picture Gallery - they also do film nights which are good fun, saw The Motorcycle Diaries there not so long ago and there was food there provided by No22 Tapas Restaurant! hope all that helps! -

My 15 year old son has a new rather fetching red hoodie, please don't pick on him if you see him, he's about as harmless as you can get one of the reasons why the initial policing effort was so inefficient in the outset was due to the fact that the rioters were able to drift back into onlooking crowds because they looked like everyone else... not everyone who dresses normally behaves that way and not everyone who wears a hoodie is a thug -
bus lane between East Dulwich station and Sainsburys
tarafitness replied to duffy10's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Fox - I think you're thinking about the main stretch of bus lane which goes up the steep section of the hill - Duffy's referring to the very short flat bit just before the traffic lights to turn left into Sainsbury's... I do agree it seems like a silly idea for such a short stretch and maybe it should just start once you've gotten past the sainsbury's lights? -
Can I just add that my 15 year old son isn't sitting on his backside playing computer games - or out rioting with the rest of the thugs, he's been taking place in some of the excellent courses (to date film making and screen writing) organised by the government through this site: http://www.futureversity.org/ (aka Summer Uni) there is plenty for teens to do, but teenagers are notoriously idle so it's up to their parents to go out their way to research the options available and follow up on them. Lazy parenting has a lot to answer for but then so does the government and local authorities as our own borough Southwark has contributed ZERO to this scheme this year and my son has had to travel to Enfield and Ealing to participate in these courses! This is okay for a 15 year old who is big enough to travel on his own (armed with a map and directions etc), but not perhaps suitable for an 11 year old to travel to the other side of London just for something to do because their local borough hasn't provided anything for them to do.

Thank you Stewart and thank you James for posting that :-)

I'd just like to say a big thank you to all the patient drivers who stop to let us cross after we've got off the bus and are running for the train. yes, it was a really daft decision to move the lights but equally I'm wondering why the bus stop on the *other* side of the road has been moved so far down the road as surely it's basically at where the new entrance to DH station is going to be?!

37 Bus Route - good and bad comments please
tarafitness replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It does seem as if everything has been said already but just want to echo other comments that it is a fabulous route but a rubbish service. The number of times the 37 has saved our bacon when returning home having caught the very last tube to Brixton and feeling a little out of pocket.. such a relief to see the familiar double decker turning off Acre Lane to whizz us back to ED. We used to live in Herne Hill and it seems that the only way to get back here (if we don't want to have to catch 2 buses.... e.g. 40/176/185/484 to King's Hospital and then 68 or 468 back down the hill!) is to take the 37, it's a great route and does cut right through. I love the idea of an express service... say Clapham Common/Junction to Peckham Rye, that would be fabulous as it's always full up then... perhaps a new 484 style short bus running every 5-10 mins instead of a big double decker every 20-45 mins depending on what time you're unfortunate enough to be standing out on Dulwich Road in the cold waiting for one!! -

Fabulous and very welcome news! I use DM every day and have been concerned by the broken wooden stairs... was such a pain in the rear when I was on crutches following ankle surgery earlier this year. quite a drastic change mind - very dramatic! -

looks like fun! you could go all-out and start in Herne Hill and work your way down... e.g. Prince Regent, The Florence, The Half Moon, Dulwich Dog etc... but then from the number of pubs en route it looks as if you'll be getting inebriated enough as it is ;-) Enjoy! :)-D
