I do like the idea of a walking club... though that does worry me slightly as I'm only 31! Clarey - I've only just moved here.. though with boyfriend in tow so don't need to worry about that. I'd suggest that if you're looking for something that'll last you need to find your potential suitor in an environment where similar minds meet... i.e. if you're into reading - a book club, music - an orchestra, God - a local pastorate, eating - a dinner club... drinking - wine tasting (although I think I saw that it was ?300 for the course - ouch!!) I realise that I'm just repeating some of what others have said on here!! I've made loads of friends through my running club - although not local to me in ED, it's so big that people come from all parts of London to join. Are you sporty? If so you could join a gym that has a social element or try the British Military Fitness training sessions they run in local parks round here... there tends to be a good mix of people in places like that and if you go often enough you get to know people :-) Depends what you're into really... but I'd say that's the place to start looking, good luck! :-)

Aww leave Truepenny's alone, a thoroughly nice bunch of people... yes, despite their being estate agents!! We've just bought a house with them and they found tenants for my other half's house in Herne Hill very quickly, so I guess that does make them 'property consultants' ;-) Really nice people to work with, and I'm not just saying that, I'm very opinionated!! I do accept that there are a *ridiculous* number of estate agents down LL though, I don't think I've ever been to an area so densely populated by them... though the area round Herne Hill station is going the same way it must be said!!

Lack of sleep in ED (fox noises again)
tarafitness replied to Miss P's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Never mind the foxes... for the past 3 days I have been kept awake by dogs barking in their gardens, can't people keep them inside if they're prone to 'vocalising'? They sounded pretty far away so it must have been much worse for whoever lived closer, poor things - it reminded me of the starlight barking from 101 Dalmatians!! -

Can anyone recommend activities for teenagers?
tarafitness replied to tarafitness's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Great, thanks for that... I spoke to my son about this last night funnily enough and he said that, although he has no desire to watch the programme, he'd be more than up for singing the songs! :-) -
Lack of sleep in ED (fox noises again)
tarafitness replied to Miss P's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to get woken up a lot by them in Herne Hill but haven't noticed as many on our road (Worlingham)... not sure if that has something to do with the huge amount of cats there are around, hopefully they do the trick in scaring them off! They used to sit in the middle of our road in HH and yell at each other, nothing to do with mating, I think it was the young calling their mothers... odd noises, guess it's cause they can't bark! Definitely more than there used to be but that's because of more food waste and the fact that they have no natural predators (except cars!) and as for them being in their 'natural environment' - well, they're called the 'Urban Fox' for a reason huh? I think they're gorgeous things, just wish they didn't make such a racket!! :-) -

Could you try and reattach that poster please? Thanks, Tara -

Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- Thanks Peckhamgatecrasher! > Air Cadets There's one on his school grounds but he's never been that interested... he's decided he's going to be a doctor, I think it's watching too much Scrubs that has caused this...!! > Cricket - Burgess Park Cool, didn't know about that, he joined his school's cricket club in year 7 but was disappointed by the unfair and biased manner in which the coach played favourites and he was often overlooked... That same teacher said yesterday that he was an aamazing fast bowler - ha! > Southwark Summer Scheme Thanks, was looking at that with my son only the other day, it seems there are a lot of courses going on, can't believe they're all free, I'm so impressed!! I filtered by Lambeth borough and there was nothing in his age group so I'm definitely warming to being in Southwark :-) -
I swear I saw a bat last night from our study... though it could have just been a gigantic moth... hmm, anyone else seen any locally?

Schools with knife crime problems in south east London
tarafitness replied to emc's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We've just moved into the area from Herne Hill where my son was mugged twice in two years! The first incident was on the way back home from HH station, late afternoon... Was by an older kid who asked him for the time and snatched his phone when he took it out to look (frustrating as he had many watches to wear!!) As upsetting as this was for him it was just a harsh lesson learnt... Don't get your phone out!! The next mobile we bought him cost ?20 and he was given strict instructions to hand it over if needs be... The phone is replaceable. The second time was a lot more distressing however... It was at the same time of day, and on his way back home from the train station (he doesn't go to school locally, it's on the Surrey boarders!) A fully grown man in his late 20's/early 30's put a knife to his throat and told him he'd cut it if he didn't hand over the phone. Nice. This proved the catalyst for us to move out of the area, we'd kidded ourselves for too long that Herne Hill was far away enough from Brixton, in reality it's part of it. We're very happy here in ED, however that's not to say that I'm stupid enough to believe there is zero chance of the same thing happening, I just do believe there's less of one. Still don't think I'd send my kid to a London secondary school, it's a tough call though as it's such a big step from the comparitive safe cocoon that is primary school... My son went to a lovely one in Chelsea and got one hell of a shock when he left *that* little pond!! -
Hi there We've recently moved into the area from Herne Hill... although only a 2 mile move door to door, we are now in a totally different borough and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on what there is to do for older kids? Lambeth did seem to provide quite a bit but I'm struggling for schemes in Southwark. There always seems to me to be a glut of activities for toddlers and younger children but not so for those over the age of 12! My son is 14 and, aside from attending the drama school JASSPA at JAGS on Saturdays, he's not really involved in anything else locally, which is a shame as he doesn't have many friends in the area because he goes to school near Wimbledon! So parents of teens - what do you do with yours after school/on weekends/during the summer months? If there are local activities around to keep my son away from the PS2/3/Wii/PC etc I'd love to hear about them!! Many thanks Tara

What is East Dulwich Missing - Food Wise

Sue: Thanks, I feel like a complete wally forgetting about Hisar as we buy from them all the time! In fact the evening of my last post I realised I'd left it too late to cook so went and picked up some of their lovely chicken shish kebabs... so tasty and low fat too... the people are alway so lovely in there as well, definite incentive to revisit! I've not actually eaten-in there before though, it's just not occured to us to do so! Nero - agreed about 3 Monkeys... although it was called Mela for as long as I lived in the area. I'm so sad it closed down, the food was excellent, especially as it was on the Tase London network so got it for half price! I went to another Mela in Shaftesbury Avenue (I think!) but although the food was good, it was sooo super salty, had to drink half a litre of water the minute I got home!! I love Dulwich Tandoori though I must say :-) But yes, definitely no shortage of curry houses! We ate at Le Chandon recently, loved how quirky the place is. I had the ostrich steak, it was beautiful... as was the flaming tarte tatin (sp?!)... wooooow, it was amazing! That's also on the taste london network so 50% off food, sweet :-) Has anyone eaten at the Thai Restaurant on the corner of North Cross Road? It always looks so busy! -
I nearly fell for this girl's scam a few months ago back in Herne Hill... she told me she had been abandoned by her boyfriend and had no money to get home... I was all ready to walk to the cashpoint with her when a kindly older gent walked past and said "oh it's you again, still trying to get home are we...?" I felt like such a sucker! Saw her again by the bus stop near HH station the other day, she's even skinner and her teeth are a lot worse, was carrying a chiller bag no doubt either housed cash or drugs or both? I feel really sorry for her but wasn't going to fall for that line when she came up to me with the same "can you help me pleeeease" plea same as before, very heartfelt... very well rehearsed!!

What is East Dulwich Missing - Food Wise
tarafitness replied to SweetShopDan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Having just recently moved from Herne Hill I must say that we are really loving the area and all the treats Lordship Lane have to offer. However, despite HH being much less vibrant and lacking in the 'heart' and 'town centre' that Lordship Lane provides, their pubs (e.g. The Prince Regent, The Florence to name but a couple) served rather awesome food, especially the Regent and we visit on Tuesdays for their superb pub quiz. Lom Bok on Half Moon Lane is a lovely little Thai restaurant, then there's Number 22, also on Half Moon Lane does lovely tapas and a short walk to Brixton brought forth the delights that Fujiama (http://www.newfujiyama.com/), a rather excellent Japanese Noodle Bar (think Wagamama but cheaper with more choice) had to offer. Fortunately most places deliver to ED but it would be lovely to walk out to grab a Bento Box and/or sushi etc... I also love Turkish/Lebanese/North African food... are there any places that offer anything like that nearby? Love a bit of Mezze, lots of smaller sharing dishes really suit me down to the ground. Would also love to see a dedicated steakhouse - unless there's one I'm unaware of? I do love the half price steak on a Monday that Locale has to offer though, they know how to cook it!! -
Hi there I was wondering what happened to my response to the estate agents recommendation thread? I recommended truepennys and my post appears to be deleted, is there a reason for this?! http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?30,304098,page=2
