  1. Another thumbs up for Fernando, who I've used a few times now to weed, prune and and generally sort out my garden. Fernando spent 3 hours this morning weeding and tidying up the front and back gardens. Always a pleasure to deal with. Happy to recommend. He can be contacted on 07946 757938
  2. Another recommendation for Aston! I contacted him due to the recommendations here and would happily recommend him to others. He undertook the work to a high standard and helpfully supplied the items needed for the work I needed doing. Would use Aston again.
  3. Another recommendation for Fernando, who came over the Easte weekend and worked hard to get the garden sorted for the spring. The main big job was to cut down a large bramble bush growing up behind the garage at the end of the garden. This involved climbing over a fence, up on the garage roof and removing (and then replacing!) an old side gate with very rusty hinges. Fernando went the extra mile and worked really hard. The front and back gardens now look great. I've used Fernando before and highly recommend him.
  4. I found Fernando via EDF based on these recommendations. He spent almost 5 hours yesterday sorting out my garden for Spring and it looks great. I am very pleased with his work and plan to get him back in another month or so to help with maintenance. A really sound, friendly and helpful guy and so I am very happy to add my own recommendation. Thanks Fernando.
  5. As an upper chamber, the HOL is entertainingly archaic. I mean, what's with the Lords Spiritual in this day and age? Even if one of them now is a woman... Still, time for an elected upper house. But well done Lords and Ladies on shafting Osborne. Shame though about the tampon tax!
  6. Thanks for the feedback. I have decided to go with a Nest based on the overall positive reviews online. Hopefully it will live up to the hype without feeling decadent! Salsa boy, the dead thermostat was a British Gas branded Drayton. Right, off to John Lewis to collect that Nest.
  7. Wifi enabled smart thermostats - Nest, Hive, Tado or similar... Have you got one? Would you recommend one over a non wifi smart thermostat? My clearly rubbish generic non wifi so called smart thermostat has died after only 2 years use. Considering replacing with a more expensive wifi version so that the heating can be controlled remotely via phone/iPad app. Anyone got one and do they actually save energy and hence ?????
  8. I use Mason & Green. Nice guy, has always been reliable and very well priced.
  9. ClaireClaire Presumably upon diagnosis you were referred to a Dietician and provided with specialist follow up? Are you getting your GF staples on prescription? I was diagnosed in 1995 and found regular sessions with the Dietician invaluable as was The Coeliac Society. The range & availability of GF food and awareness of Coeliac Disease now is so much better than years ago. As someone else advised, the best advice is to try to make your kitchen essentially gluten free, with the family eating GF meals as much as possible. It's fairly straightforward after a while. Ask your GP for a referral to Dietetics at KCH.
  10. I've been to both Aquashard and Hutong bars at The Shard several times, on a Friday or Saturday evening. Never had an issue with getting in and have always managed to get a seat and table in Aquashard bar. The service charge thing can be annoying... They charged it even when I ordered at the bar. I refused to pay it on that occasion but happy to pay it when having table service. The cocktails are nice. A bottle of Veuve Cliquot will set you back around ?70 (excl. service).

I believe the UKIP manifesto proposes a statutory duty upon UK women to clean behind their fridges on a quarterly basis... Or face being publicly branded "a slut".
  12. Blue Monday - New Order Sun comes up, it's Tuesday morning - Cowboy Junkies Wednesday morning 3am - Simon & Garfunkel Thursday - The Pet Shop Boys Friday on my mind - The Easybeats Saturday night's alright for fighting - Elton John Every day is like Sunday - Morrissey
  13. C4 news report tonight. Tilbury Docks Afghan Sikh refugees taken to Barry House via NASS whilst their asylum claims are processed. Looked like there was good support provided from local Sikh community.
  14. Tried the new Honor Oak on Friday evening. We were there by 18:30 and it was really busy. Inside full of grown ups, garden full of families & kids. I liked it but unfortunately when we tried to order food at 19:30 they had stopped taking orders as they were too overwhelmed! And I really wanted the Lobster Burger... The restaurant bit looked nice. It was fully booked out so we didn't even get to see the menu (different from the bar menu). Didn't get to see the Whisky Room either but look forward to paying another visit. So we went off and ate at Babur. Which was expensively delicious!

    Gluten

David Coeliac Disease is a chronic autoimmune condition. Along the lines of other autoimmune diseases like diabetes (type 1), Thyroid Disorders, Addisons Disease, Lupus etc. The only treatment is a life long strict gluten free diet. The risks of untreated Coeliac Disease are several, the most significant of which is lymphoma of the bowel. Gluten destroys the lining of one's intestines for those with Coeliac Disease. At the time of my diagnosis in 1995 I had ataxia and peripheral neuropathy, secondary to the degree of flattening of my villi. Gluten free stable foods (bread, pasta, flour usually) are available on prescription for those with this diagnosis on the basis that a strict GF diet is the only treatment and the costs of treating the associated conditions, if the coeliac disease was not effectively managed, would be greater. Therefore within BNF prescribing guidelines, gluten free foods in these circumstances are considered a medicine. Prescriptions for GF food are not free (unlike prescriptions for treatment for other autoimmune conditions eg: Insulin, Thyroxine, Salbutamol etc). So I pay via an annual prescription "season ticket". You are right of course that there are many naturally gluten free foods available. But bread, pasta etc are such staples in our typical British Isles diet, that you would really be excluding people like me from feeling part of the general mainstream in terms of my day to day eating. I have no truck with this seemingly fashionable gluten free "bandwagon". For those of us with Coeliac Disease it is a tedious condition.
  17. Not local, but the hairdressers in St Thomas' Hospital do a wash & blow dry for ?16 ( less if your hair is short). It's a proper salon and open to all.
  18. I was in the same situation as you last Autumn. I had used Hillarys to fit shutters in my previous property & they were fine. In this property I used Bromley Blinds Ltd to measure, supply & fit a variety of Venetian blinds and roller blinds. I think they also do made to measure curtains. They have good reviews & recommendations via EDF and I was very happy with the quote and with their service.

    India visa

I applied for a visa in autumn 2012 so not sure if my info/ experience reflects the current situation. But I applied in person at the Visa Application Centre in Victoria. It was relatively painless and straightforward, took about 45 mins wait to be called to the counter. Visa was ready for collection in less than a week. Personally, I wouldn't bother paying a company. HTH.

  21. Coeliac Disease - great craic! (And significantly more prevalent amongst those with Irish heritage... FWIW).
  22. Too late for today, but worth knowing that Canvas & Cream in Forest Hill usually have gluten free bread available. They are quite knowledgable about GF requirements,in my experience from talking with the owners ( as I believe one of them is GF herself).
  23. GP services are commissioned via NHS England, not the local CCG. This change came about with the demise of PCT's. As some GP's form part of CCG's, they cannot therefore commission their own local services. So I understand that concerns regarding particular local GP provision really ought to be addressed to NHSE. I assume therefore that this event is about Walk In/Urgent Care Centres within Southwark rather than GP Practices?
  24. I have uPVC double Glazed Juliet balcony doors that have been letting rain in throughout the winter. I've had extra mastic sealant added and the roof checked, but driving, horizontal rain still gets in, somehow, underneath the door frame, causing damp patches on the ceiling in the room below. So, can anyone recommend someone/ a company who can do remedial, repair work? Worst case scenario, I guess, might be that the whole door/ frame needs re-fitting... Thanks for any suggestions!
  25. Check out nigeleaton.co.uk His price list is on his website and will give you some idea of likely cost. Nigel built me an alcove wardrobe and also cabinet/bookcases a couple of months ago. They are fab! He was recommended by a friend but also has a few recommendations on this forum. I did get another carpenter to quote and his costs were not much less than Nigel.
