  1. The Childrens Home was No.17, adjacent to No.18 which was a hostel for homeless families - both more the Chadwick Road end of Grove Park.
  2. Is it the old Turning Point hostel (no's 31-32)? Opposite the house (rather nice flats) where a female doctor was murdered on her doorstep by her ex boyfriend (in the mid 1990's) - maybe that's why it's creepy...?!

What do we do? We deliver your babies. We educate your children. We treat your illnesses. We deal with your emergencies and save your life. We deal with your non emergencies even when your life doesn't need saving but you think it does. We'll hold your hand when you're in crisis. We'll protect you from yourself when you can't. We fight your fires. We investigate your crimes and prosecute your criminals. We safeguard the vulnerable. We protect the needy. We assist the less abled. We feed & shelter the destitute. We'll wipe your backside when you've lost the ability to do it yourself. Hell, we'll even bury or cremate you when you're dead if no one else will...
  4. The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion - a beautifully heartfelt book that made profound sense to me when reading it a couple of months after a sudden unexpected bereavement of an immediate family member. Might make sense to your friend too - especially if the sad death of her dad was unexpected. Elizabeth Kubler Ross - On Death and Dying is a classic - but might be too "scholarly" and not quite what you are after...
  5. susyp - I am posting on this thread, not because I am a parent and not because I have personal experience of DV, but because the nature of my profession brings me into close contact with both those who have experienced DV and those agencies that work with "victims" of DV as well as perpretators. Firstly, you are not responsible for your husbands safety or wellbeing - regardless of the fact that he has had "a helluva life" and is possibly hurtling down the M4 making threats. You are however responsible for your own safety and wellbeing and that of your daughter. You and she need to come first and be safe. I can recommend Bede House - they have some fantastic DV workers and are Southwark based. www.bedehouse.org Please, do contact them. First thing tomorrow. Stay safe.

Ooooh, it doesn't filter North Lincolnshire towns. How marvellous! Sorry Admin, I know this is not the lounge...

Mockney Piers - at least you were trying to get to Galway via gara - imagine if you had been en route to Scunthorpe?
  8. Loz, I think you will find that Mick is looking for a submissive woman to throw herself at his feet...
  9. Ah, I thought you sounded somewhat constipated, Rick. Best get it out.
  10. Whether or not it's fake - I think this delightful young lady is tweeting from Ireland. She'd have to hop on a Ryanair flight rather swiftly to start any UK looting....
  11. I live in a gated community as it happens - works a treat for keeping out those pesky door to door tea towel sellers. Shame we can't make the EDF a gated community - keeping out inane first time post trollers... I feel my gated sanctuary has been violated.... through my laptop.
  12. Personally, I blame the Captain, not Geoff. Or Rosie...
  13. Not really, the alarmed electric shock undersheet cured me...
  14. Boden. I rue the day that catalogue ever came through my door.

There was something about Beyonce's performance that annoyingly kept making me think of Tina Turnoff. Maybe it was her hair? Or her thighs...
  16. Don't know him. Never met him. But what has become of Mr John Smith? ps: All I saw in that montage was a rather poor Ricky Gervais lookalike with a moustache....
  17. Don't know of any ready made gluten free white sauce but cornflour is fine (follow the instructions for white sauce on the pack if you are unsure of quantities) Waitrose have the best selection of GF foods (better than Sainsburys). Asda is good too for GF stuff. I assume the actual Lasagne sheets are gluten free too?! I have always failed to make good GF lasagne - if you succeed, do let me know your recipe!!
  18. I got bored by sentence three of paragraph two, when I got to the word "marriages"(note: plural!)> Yawn... I trust you have moved on Louisiana?
  19. Ladymuck - is your Hubby working with any locals? If so, why doesn't he ask then what they would do? It might turn out to be a perfectly usual way of doing business in that particular hotel?! My philosophy when overseas is always seek local advice if not sure. Good luck & hopefully you won't have a sleepless night tonight!
  20. For the record I would happily welcome a Waitrose (along the lines of their Clapham Junction shop) in place of the current Co-op on Lordship Lane. It would save me the drive to Beckenham and get me walking on the Lane. But I am curious James Barber about the council owned site you have in mind. Is this site currently dormant? Or still in use providing a much needed public service?
  21. 363 was running all the way to C Palace about an hour ago - assume it's still the same now...
  22. A day at the races? Kempton - King George VI Chase?
