Easiest route to the science museum?
hpsaucey replied to Fuschia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
HI there. I work there AND have kiddies I take there so have done this a fair bit. Train to Victoria and then 52 (which stops just up the road near Hyde Park) is quick. Step free if you go from ED and change at Peckham Rye from Platform 2 to 1 for the Victoria train. Yes the 345 goes from Peckham to South Ken but boy, it can take ages as it goes via Battersea and Clapham! Ditto, I think the one you're talking about which stops REALLY near - i.e. opposite is the 360 which goes to Elephant and Castle. Again, this goes all round the houses. OK if you've got plenty of time but not if its rush hour or you;ve got antsy kids. Another points. I'm guessing you're thinking of going in half term. It can be NIGHTMARISHLY BUSY!!!! If you can, get there for opening at ten, stay a couple of hours and then either get out of there FAST and find somewhere for lunch, or go to the less busy galleries on the upper floors - although as they're the medical galleries they're not always for the squeamish. Good luck, Helen -

Pregnancy pillows - recommendations
hpsaucey replied to sanity girl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ooh - i have this one (Theraline its called) and absolutely LOVE it. Used to curl round and hug it. Found it the most comfortable thing ever. Used it for breastfeeding after too. I'm still pretty attached to mine, but if you wanted to borrow it for a day or so to 'test drive' you'd be more than welcome as they're not cheap! I'd need it back for Saturday as I'm passing it on to my sis. Hi there. I spoke to the guy on Peckham Rye with the black bag and white blanket last Wednesday I think. Gave him some money and food. He said he had somewhere warm to stay at night - a church refuge although I can't remember the name of it.He'd also seen the council I think to try and get housing sorted. Think he was on the common from fairly early - 8:30 a.m. to after six at night. Sadly haven't seen him since them. Hoping he's OK. Good to have thess phone numbers though - so thank you to those who posted them here. Am gong to plug them into phone in case needed in future.

Wanted: Toys and cushions for Refugee Council Mums Group
hpsaucey replied to bea_filkin's topic in The Family Room Discussion
HI there. I have a (slightly battered - i.e lost a couple of doors but still great to play with) Disney pink princess castle). Hopefully its in the category of too big to loose! I'm sure I could drum up some more things as well if they'd be of any use? If its wanted it would be great if someone was doing the rounds to collect stuff. If not, then I could bring it round to whoever's collecting in East Dulwich. Helen -
Well -can I second both the Lansinoh disposable ones - really comfortable and never stuck to those sore nipples early on! and the washable ones Molly mentioned with the lace back (can't remember the make) as the only washable ones I tried that didn't go hard or get uncomfortable. Helen

Working 4 days a week: Mon vs. Fri off?
hpsaucey replied to amydown's topic in The Family Room Discussion
HI - I take Thurs and Fri off. Def get more of a weekend feeling taking Fri rather than Mon off. HOWEVER, if you're after classes etc to do with kiddies then not mush Surestart/COunstil free stuff happening then - most seems to be MOnday to Wedneday. Can you try it and change your mind about the day later if you need to? B -
Wow - thank you everyone for your useful responses. I understand it now!!! Am pursuing my employer now to persuade them its a good idea to sign up!!! Cheers, Helen

HI there. Has anyone used the cycle to work scheme to get a new bicycle? I don't think I understand how it works and was hoping someone else did. It says that you pay a salary sacrifice for the bike for a 12-month rental period but the employer owns the bike and you have to buy it from them 'at market value' after the 12 months. I'm sure I'm being stupid and misinterpreting but doesn't this mean you end up paying extra in effect? Help!!! Helen

Changing Bags - recommendations???
hpsaucey replied to littleEDfamily's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Nor me. As long as it fits over the buggy handles and my other half could use it without embarrassment then any old bag OK for us - LOL. Kind of found it irritating that companies could find even more unnecessary baby stuff to make me covet so determined not to give in to it - in the bag department anyway. Can I second the probiotics for little ones from Health Matters. My newborn also had to go onto antibiotics so I gave him this as well. Mastitits can come on pretty quick - knocked me out for a couple of days in a BIG way - so I THINK you'd probably know if you'd got it, unless its a slow burner. Sure someone else has said this but cranberry v good for thrush and lots of water ton flush it out, and yes, you're right about antibiotics and thrush! Hope the docs wrong! Primary school place allocation chaos has started!
hpsaucey replied to tallgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yay - Ivydale is, indeed a really lovely school - my eldest is in reception. We looked at about ten schools including St J&C/Goodrich etc and actually found ourselves liking Ivydale best because although not getting the most amazing OFSTED it is normal, very caring, the children and staff really seem to like each other, has a brilliant children's centre etc etc. Good luck with the place, and good luck to everyone else waiting for it to be sorted out!!! Primary school place allocation chaos has started!
hpsaucey replied to tallgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Agree with a lot of this. However its wrong to say that the LEA will allocate you your nearest school if you've put it down. You could, in theory, get in at ALL the four schools you've chosen, in which case they allocate you the one highest up your list of preferences. At least, this is what was meant to happen last year. In practice we know that you're probably going to get your nearest school, IF YOU'VE LISTED IT, because there is no way your going to be near enough to any others given the number of children needing places. But I'll 'second' the supporting your local primary. They're mostly fine around here and there's much to be said for being near your school - play dates/better community spirit etc etc etc. -
Cotbed mattress advice - organic, pocket sprung etc?
hpsaucey replied to akc74's topic in The Family Room Discussion
HI there. You can get both. I got one wool etc without springs for my first as I couldn't find one then. However, I'm pretty sure that the more recent one I've bought is the latex, coir and wool etc with springs. Find them both great for my little ones - and others who've slept on them when needed. H -
HHm - suspect I like ALL those things. Just don't have the budget to indulge ... Keep seeing lots of 'teccie' dad-type baby stuff around too at the minute. Check out all the dads with newborns at Peckham Rye park cafe. Even saw one with a pram with what looked like a car-type metal bumper round it. Defo aimed at dads lol.
-
Not sad at all - important to get it right. We have a tiny flat and I made my partner put up with a massive old Silver Cross pram in the front room for nearly a year because I wanted to use one. Drove him nuts LOL, but made me and my little'un very happy. Sure you're right about resale value of that bed too!

Boy - I'm a killjoy! That nest thing DOES look stunning and I'm sure would be brilliant but I wonder how long before your baby grew out of it - a few months max? Lot of money but I guess if you've got the readies then why not?

Back to work and expressing breast milk
hpsaucey replied to Ruth_Baldock's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I went back at 9 months with my first. FOund the same - down to around three feeds so easy to feed them morning and evening so you're only worrying about expressing once at work. Also hired a machine from the Co-op chemist for a few months and boy was it worth it! Made expressing quick and easy. Good luck - I'm sure it will be fine. Helen -

Hi there - if I understand what SOuthwark told you correctly then its wrong - at least it was last year. We got offered places in both Southwark and Lewisham. Did they misunderstand and think that you were asking if you could get offered two places in Southwark when you were asking about being offered places in different boroughs? H -
I bought a cotbed with adjustable height that you can put up against your own bed - for easier night-time feeding! When they're older the sides can come off completely and you can lower the height and use it as a normal bed. It's gone through two kids and I guess my two year old will be using it for another 4 -5 years or so so. I agree that you can spend as little or as much as you want. I do think that, unless you're REALLY pressed for space, a cotbed is a better investment that cot size as they will quite quickly outgrow a cot-sized one. H
