During normal solar activity, the Aurora Borealis is best seen during winter in the Northern hemisphere but displays can be triggered by solar prominences at any time of the year. The Northern Lights have been seen as far south as Mexico City.

I believe Virgin is in the process of upgrading its 2M customers to 10M. That may be the cause. My connection was all over the place on the day of the upgrade, Friday. It's well worth the hassle, though: I'm getting 9.7M now!
