I favour more of a suspension. sort of like suspended animation, but for a place. Till it gets its sh*t sorted.

I would imagine it would work much like a driving license. There is nothing to stop you buying or even driving a car without one but it is illegal. If someone were not to have a dog-license and the police/PCSO noted their dog mis-behaving it could be taken away from the owner (but not sent to the crusher in case anyone was still on the car analogy). As PGC says, they were common in the past and the number of irresponsible dog owners is high. I question what else could be done?

A poor show from England once again. Mountains of possession and absolutely no idea what to do with it. With no playmaker in the mould of Sexton, O'Gara or O'Driscoll our back line looks sadly short of ideas. The most exciting thing England did all game was a 40m driving maul! Even if we were getting results this wouldn't be good news but losing games as well is just unacceptable. I watched the interactive "forum" after the game a Guscott made a good point. Marting Johnson is staying too loyal to players who are just not performing. This leads to disillusionment amongst those trying to break through and complacency in the first XV. We had almost our favoured starting line-up out on the pitch so no excuses about injuries this time. If Johnson won't drop players and experiment then the buck stops with him. At least if he shuffled things around a bit and it still didn't work the players could take of the blame. Foden looked bright when he came on and must surely start against the Scots. Flutey looks short of match fitness. Shontaye Haype (sp?) could be brought in. Flood or Geraghty are in line for Wilkinson's berth. The forwards are equally inept. Where are the ball carriers? Even our back row are now just being used as battering rams. The lack of finesse is palpable. The World Cup is 18months away and we are a million miles away from competing with the best in Europe let alone the Southern Hemisphere teams.

Have today embarked on a 15hr veal stock recipe courtesy of the French Laundry Cookbook. And this website. It's a marathon to only be attempted if you have a lot of free time one weekend but I'm hoping the results will pay dividends. Might post some photos later....

You'll look like a tit Bob. Especially if you try and use it as a stylus for your ipad. Get a fountain pen and some paper. Then write a letter of apology to yourself for even considering getting a space pen.

Oh PGC, it gets better.... You can buy the mattresses they use for a mere $1000. And their rooms are not graded like normal hotel rooms (double, large double, suite, penthouse suite etc) but with the following cringingly American synonyms: "Wonderful", "Spectacular" and "Fabulous" - for normal rooms and "Fantastic", "Marvellous", "Wow" and, er, "Extreme Wow" - for suites Oh. Dear. God. See here for more.

Ooh - ta. I need to make changes again I think. Why can't they play the same bloody XV every week. Sheesh.

If he has a good close season after his injury lay-off I wouldn't bet against Phil Jagielka.

Hmmm....I'm worried Huguenot. Your therapy doesn't involve the consumption or use of dihydrogen monoxide like homeopathy does, does it? Because there are some things you should be aware of: Dihydrogen monoxide: is also called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain. contributes to the "greenhouse effect". may cause severe burns. is fatal if inhaled. contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape. accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals. may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes. has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients. Beware. Dihydrogen monoxide is used extensively in homeopathic treatments. As you can see it is incredibly dangerous. Ban dihydrogen monoxide before it's too late!

Labour candidates in East Dulwich

Politician makes policy to win votes shocker! Come on Quidsy - are you expecting me to believe that you're arguing against any degree of populism in politics? Whilst I'd like to see an ideological backbone to policy making I don't object to some measures that are vote winners too. This is the 21st century. This is fundamentally a policy which will help poorer families, by removing the stigma and social barriers which continue to be attached to recipients of free school meals and by offering a healthy and nutritious meal to those 1,800 pupils who are already entitled to free school meals but do not take advantage of that entitlement. A recent study by Leeds University showed that only one per cent of packed lunches taken to school contained the nutritional content that a child needs - surely the idea of the local council providing that is not so abhorrent? -

I would have thought that economies of scale would mean that the extra children could be fed at a comparatively low extra cost. Once you factor in the cost of administering a means-tested school meal system I would imagine it becomes almost cost neutral. It's like objecting to free museum entry because some people can already afford to go.... the fact that a local policy commitment is to feed all children a healthy, nutritious and balanced diet would seem to be entirely sensible. -
So people know what we're talking about.... http://www.treehugger.com/kt-3.jpg Not exactly renowned for their subtlety are they, these Yanks? And what about the subterranean levels?

As a Leeds fan I'd quite like to meet Cantona too. First I'd ask whether he really did give Lesley Ash one and then I'd kick in the nads for defecting to United. In all seriousness there are probably two or three that would be a tough call to seperate: Paul Reaney - The most under appreciated player of the Revie era and 3rd in the all time list of appearances. A true gent. David Batty - a Leeds man thru and thru who won a league championship and returned after a sojourn to help guide us to the Euro Cup semis. Lucas Radebe - A giant of the game in all senses of the word and a hero on the pitch.

Grammar schools should we bring them back?
david_carnell replied to ????'s topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Unsurprisingly I disagree with ????. I went to a grammar school in Surrey. It has amazing exam results and is one of the top 20 state schools in the country. I enjoyed my time there a great deal. However, I would like to abolish them. Essentially I believe them to be extraordinarily unfair. With a two-tier system of education that condemns children to either an excellent grammar school or a "ordinary" (and that covers a multitude of sins) secondary modern (or whatever outdated term one wishes to use) the pressure to gain a place at these elite schools becomes immense. Currently, and I speak from experience (although it's got even worse in the last ten years), this manifests itself in either the hot-housing of 10 year old children forced to endure night after night of endless test papers and coached to exhaustion by a private tutor (for those who can afford one) and also a rise in house prices for those areas that still possess grammars. I suppose the latter may be eradicated should they become widespread. The former issue remains. My biggest concern is that a child's life is effectively being decided at 10 or 11 years of age. Should they fail this one entrance exam, second chances do not exist. What happens to those bright children who miss out? Are they condemned to the "social failure" that is the comprehensive? It is a situation that makes me feel distinctly uneasy. When I was at primary school I remember the heartache suffered by friends and their parents when they failed the entrance exams I was lucky enough to pass. It is a feeling that an 11 year old should not go through. My solution to the problem described by the OP (on the assumption that his hypothesis on the state of British education is accurate) is one similar to that suggested by Toby Young. I would like to see what Young calls "comprehensive grammars". This is a accepts-all-comers school that then utilises streaming in each subject to both push those at the top of their subject and give a helping hand to those who need it. By not specialising in "classical" education it allows those who excel at creative or non-traditional subjects to also be exposed to the best the education system can offer. Finally it also allows for proper social integration by not discriminating against those who cannot afford private tutors or expensive houses in catchment areas. Surely this is a more preferable solution than harking back to system that had it's heyday in the 1950s and 60s. -
How Flannery is still on the pitch for the Irish I do not know. One of the worst, most cynical challenges I have seen. Disgraceful.
-
Scotland were poor against the French. The scrum was appalling and the backs lacked any creative or attacking flair. I'm not a fan of Parks (mainly as he's an Aussie) at fly-half but he was outstanding today. And Euan Murray bolstered the forwards - probably Scotland's only true world-class player. My only consolation is having Shane Williams in my fantasy XV!
-
Quite the most extraordinary finish to a game of rugby I have ever seen. Scotland must be heartbroken. As the land of my fathers I must say I'm disappointed. To have led for so long only to lose through ill-discipline is galling. A much improved performance than against the French however.

People on the "What does East Dulwich lack" thread who request stuff we already have either IN East Dulwich or very close by. An Italian Restaurant?! WTF?! Do you walk around with your eyes closed? I count 4 with 15 mins walk of Goose Green. A bakery?! Jesus H Christ.... there's more bread round here than the Sermon on the Mount! -
I've had to use up two of my five already just to have 15 players on the pitch. Not happy.
