  1. Not all "safety" has to refer to a plane ditching in the Hudson River, MamoraMan. Safety on-board aircraft can have many facets: first aid and restraining aggressive customers being the first to examples that spring to mind. Less cabin crew on flights may lead to situations where these types of incidents are handled with less skill and efficiency than they currently are. If redundancies are affecting those on higher salaries more then the problem will be exacerbated - the higher wages often reflect further skills (such as first aid or security) gained during a career. I think my point remains valid.
  2. Heehee.....this is getting fun. Can you imagine how angry Smith is right now? Answer: very. Come on Swanny - maiden century + 5 wicket haul = hall of fame
  3. Anyone would think you've worked in government Michael.... ;-)

  5. Christmas by Low. Christmas music for those who feel like slitting their wrists at the thought of it already. Marvellous stuff.

Except that 75% of their cabin staff only earn ?20k before allowances. Pretty much industry standard. The media furore surrounding the figures is misleading. > BA cabin crew are like > tube drivers with lipstick (in labour market > terms) - their cause is about as just. I think that's a pretty harsh comment. Without dragging tube drivers into this, cabin crew work in demanding, high pressure environments where their skills and training can save lives. The work is physically demanding and pretty thankless. Customers are often obnoxious and whilst a few get the long-haul glamour of an over-night stay in Miami most have 6am flights to Bern or Frankfurt. If anything, I would be concerned that the removal of crew from flights would not only impact on customer service but also safety.
  7. My thoughts exactly Chick. People seem to view those striking as shirkers who fancy a few days off work over Xmas. You don't actually get paid whilst taking part in industrial action..... The ballot was 9 to 1 in favour of strike action. This tells you a lot about the deep rooted resentment amongst BA cabin staff about the way they have and are being treated by BA management. It's not fun and no one enjoys it. But sometimes there is little option left. And whilst Unite have offered to return to the negotiating table, Willie Walsh has rejected the possibility of reconsidering redundancies and reducing cabin staff levels. If there is a villain in this piece I think it is unfair to point the blame at those workers fighting for their jobs.
  8. Mmmmm....a good sit. Now that's livin'.

Again only because they are comfortable. > One step further to the grave.... Well done sir. Welcome to the Club. C'mon in, there's a wingback and a single malt waiting for you by the fire. Now, I have some tweed swatches for you to peruse. Did you corduroy is measured in "wales"? It's the space between the rows of cord. The lower the "wale" number, the thicker the width of the wale (i.e., 4-wale is much thicker than 11-wale). Wide wale is more commonly found on trousers; medium, narrow, and fine wale fabrics are usually found in garments used above the waist. Weirdly, whilst I dress like an old man (and love it), my Dad dresses only in jeans, t-shirts and motorcycle gear. Hmmm....?!

  12. I'm intrigued as to what spending can be cut on transport? Network Rail - not for profit TOCs - privatised Tube - budget controlled from City Hall (within a PPP) with maintenance privatised. Air Traffic Control - Sold off Roads - expansion had already slowed to nothing Crossrail would be an obvious candidate since much of the funding comes from central government. Other than that spending elsewhere is a drop in the ocean. Housing funding could be cut leading to a shortfall in affordable housing and council refurbishment. Bad news for the poorest in society. Defence is an easy target withs some big budget projects (Future Carrier, Trident, FRES) but most are already committed to and would cost more to stop now than to complete. Frontline budgets have already been trimmed to the bone and further cuts would potentially have devastating consequences for those serving overseas. Moral is already low.
  13. Le Chardon's not bad. Service is "French" but otherwise I'd say it would be a winner with the ladies. I wouldn't do Chinese. Too much possibility of slurping noodles or getting thick gloopy sauce all over your boat-race.
  14. Pick a species that is slightly less close to extinction?
  15. And more importantly, Leeds are through to the next round of the cup with a 5-1 win over Kettering (1-1 after 90mins!) and will be off to Old Trafford next. Hmmmm.....Fergie, fancy putting out a reserve team by any chance?
  16. Steve, It's also highly volatile and anyone stupid enough to try would probably end up in A&E with 90% 3rd degree burns. So, there's my warning and disclaimer. For educational purposes only. Whilst I wasn't aware of HAL's method, my local access to trace manganese anti-polymerisation catalysts has recently been compromised due to excess napalm production and MI5 surveillance. Oh, and I can spell Vietnam too. ;-)
  17. Just beat you to it Benny-boy! It's by far the easiest method. Although I'm liking the turning off of heat bit. Avoids scum collecting on the water surface.
  18. Don't poach them in a saucepan. Do it in much shallower water in a frying pan. The egg won't be perfectly round (more like an oblate spheroid) but is much easier to handle. Don't spin the water either. Just put the egg in a greased espresso cup (or similar) first and gently(!) tip into the frying pan. Remove with a slotted spoon after about 1min and rest on kitchen roll to absorb excess water. Vinegar can still be used if the eggs aren't the freshest. But if that's the case maybe just do scrambled instead.l
  19. Mix it with petrol and make napalm!

I wonder how many > of us would put our money where our mouths are, > and advocate a 43% rate for earnings over 50K? Yes it was rather abitrary but was more a ball park figure to get the debate going. The reason I wouldn't instigate the creation of extra tax bands for the middle classes is that, actually, their creation and management is administratively very expensive. Tax should be a compromise between redistributive yet simple to understand. Excessive bands is terribly complex for joe public.
  21. An acrylic tie? Sir, its crumpled appearance is the least of your worries. Throw it away and start again properly. With silk. Woven, not printed. In a sombre colour. There, isn't that better?

  23. It's not politics of envy Quids. It's politics of fairness. I believe: that the highest earners in this country do not sufficiently contribute in taxation; the wealth should be redistributed through taxtion from rich to poor; that those countries and socieities with small wealth gaps are most harmonious; therefore my above mentioned tax policies reflect that. I notice you didn't comment on any of my other proposals. Care to?
  24. Cancel Trident Abolish the RAF and absorb it into the Army and Navy. Abolish all regional assemblies and parliaments. Abolish plans for ID Cards. Run the railway network as a not-for-profit enterprise removing ownership from each TOC at the end of their contracts. Raise income tax by 5p in the ?1 on all those earning more than ?200,000pa.
