  1. I also lost two paper recycling bags! Bloody tea-leafs.
  2. My Dad (bless him) wishes to be put on a wooden boat, have it set alight, and then push it off (!) towards France. And I quote "that way, those bloody frogs have all the inconveniance, and not you!". Not sure what the coastguard might say, but it would be fun. Something like this but without the family in vikiing costumes: http://norwoodmatt.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/VikingFuneralByFrankDiscksee.jpg
  3. From today's BBC website: Tesco chief 'is binge godfather'
  4. Which reminds me of this nominee for worst song ever: Sam Fox - Touch Me
  5. In tribute to no-one in particular:

I can't quite work out whether your tongue has been fiurmly in cheek this whole time or whether you take equal inspiration from Jo, Rachel, Tina, Hannha, Jon, Bradley and the other one as much as you do from Jeff Buckley Indeed there are people who know little of Jeff Buckley as there are those who know little of Raphael, Dante and Shakespeare but there's no need to appeal to the lowest common denominator is there. Anyway, perhaps you and I had best not hijack this lovely thread any further with our inane chat and sixth-form style arguments over art and criticism. ps. leave Dylan alone or I'll have to see you outside. ;-)
  7. *Bob* Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Pop music shouldn't be compared to proppa music, > because the two are not comparable. Whoa there Bob. You are on thin ice there. You'd have to define "proper" music to start with and decide what falls into the different categories. The Beatles were/are pop music but I'd say they are lyrically more inventive and influential than the Monkees. Likewise, are the Beach-Boys the greatest male harmony group of all time or is Pet Sounds merely trite surf pop. > And lyrics are not to be confused with poetry, > because they aren't. Mr Zimmerman, would you please read to the forum the lyrics from one of your hits: Johnny's in the basement Mixing up the medicine I'm on the pavement Thinking about the government The man in the trench coat Badge out, laid off Says he's got a bad cough Wants to get it paid off Look out kid It's somethin' you did God knows when But you're doin' it again You better duck down the alley way Lookin' for a new friend The man in the coon-skin cap In the big pen Wants eleven dollar bills You only got ten Poetry of the finest order. Oh, and Sean, you're bang on the money.

Does "These Words" hit just a little close home Bob? Trying to find the magic Trying to write a classic Don't you know, don't you know, don't you know? Waste-bin full of paper Clever rhymes, see you later Hmmmm. Whilst both Daniel the Pie-Eater and his sister are clearly lyrical genii, it is stuff like this that discourages me from further debate over their respective merits ;-) Still, rather than just criticise I suppose I should open myself up to the same treatment: Otis Redding - Try a little tenderness Sam Cooke - A change is gonna come Johnny Cash - I walk the line Bob Dylan - Girl from the North Country
  9. As I understand you're a man of some musical knowledge and ability *Bob*, I'll let it slide. Anyone nominates his sister on this thread though, and there'll be trouble! ;-)
  10. Mine wasn't collected yesterday, as it should be. I'm on Oakhurst Grove if that helps. Maybe it'll go today whilst I'm at work. It was some newspapers as well which'll now be soaked through.

He came across quite well. Very droll sense of humour and quite non-pc at times. I really wanted my book signed but the queue was huge! I've read his book and know Fiennes can be a bit of a shit at times but he has achieved more than ten ordinary men in his lifetime and is still planning more expeditions. Glad you enjoyed it too Peckhamgatecrasher. Interested in a dangerous expedition to North Dulwich?!
  13. ditto Keef Also - wtf is up with their ordering system. You are shown to a table by a "waitress", she gives you the menu and then explains that you have to go to the desk at the back to order. So far so iffy, but the killer is that they will then bring your burger and drink to you when it's ready. Can you not just give the staff and pen and paper and save me the trouble of getting out of my seat. I'm not lazy, but either you're a restaurant and serve people properly or you're McDonald's and you shouldn't be charging ?10 for some minced entrails cooked to sh*t.
  14. I pay less than ?30 per month thru Lloyds TSB as I have an account with them. Contents only though as I'm renting so don't have to worry about buildings insurance.
  15. Leeds. It has a Harvey Nichols you know (at least according to my uni prospectus, I was too poor to shop there). Interestingly (or not) it is the biggest City to only have one football team.
  16. Clare I sincerely doubt he is "evil" but even as a Labour member I think I can safely say he is a complete wally. How, or why, he didn't think either this was important or that he wouldn't get found out is ridiculous. He's not only shamed himself but the Party and the Government. How high and far this goes is anyone's guess? Of course things are always different when family is involved. I'm sure Peter, as an individual, is a lovely chap and the crime of the son is not the crime of the father (or you!). But this is a crime, and his resignation will end his political career. I feel sorry for him but it is probably what he deserved. The general public are cynical about politics at the best of times. This sort of corruption does no one any favours. And if you hear any Tories or LibDems banging on about this too loudly, they have equally dirty secrets when it comes to party funding.
  17. Jah Lush Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >Last time out at the Ritzy I saw Closer which was an > excellent black & white portrayal of the doomed > Ian Curtis. I saw that as well. Beautifully shot and great performances but the pacing went a bit awry in the second half which seemed to drag. If anything the guy that played Curtis had a better voice than he did.
  18. As featured in today's Grauniad: Cracking alt.country americana. Playing in Kilburn on Friday so I might take a trip.
  19. It was quite a event. Youngs basically stuck two fingers up at the wishes of the local drinkers. The ex landlord owned his own brewery and sold through the pub. Obviously Youngs wouldn't let that continue. They said they had never encountered this sort reaction when taking voer pubs before. The trouble was, they didn't research the pub first. The just buy off a list and find out later. My girlfriend is now out of the pub business (she loved her time there, but it took a toll on our relationship as I worked 9-5 and rarely got to see her) and works in tourism and leisure. Neither of us have been back since. The micro-brewery is still going (just) and sells all over the SE. If your lease allows you to, buy a few barrels from the Pilgrim Brewery and tell them I sent you!
  20. As a fellow young graduate who chose East Dulwich as their first London base, hello and welcome. Northcross Rd is a good location, maybe a bit noisy on a Saturday if you're near the market end - which is very good by the way. I live just off East Dulwich Road and that end is certainly easier if you or your boyfriend need to catch the trains into town. Victoria from Peckham Rye is 12mins and London Bridge from either PR or East Dulwich station is about the same. Dulwich Picture House is good for art exhibitions and obviously you are close enough to town to go the major galleries. A bus service even runs to Trafalgar Sq for the National and the Portrait if that's your thing. Pubs and bars are plentiful. There is a list on the "Best Bar in Dulwich 2007" thread and a few other good 'uns just outsdide the se22 postcode bracket. It took my girlfriend and I about two months to look and find somewhere we liked/could afford so don't get too dispirited over your move. The forum section on property is handy and I think bargains can be had via Gumtree as it cuts out the agents fees. It seems we are of similar age, interests etc and I've only been here since July so if you want any more opinions on anything or a beer when you arrive send me a PM. Good luck and hope you enjoy your stay in ED.
  21. From the Green and Blue blog: Removed as it's been removed from the Green & Blue site - The Administrator
  22. I empathise with your plights entirely, Mark, Steve. My girlfriend used to run a pub in Surrey before we moved here. It was taken over by a PubCo and destroyed the lives of the owners/employees and ruined a community pub that sold great beer at reasonable prices. Should you wish to find out more you can here: Save The Riser I seem to remember it was legislation passed back in the 1980s that started us down this slippery slope although I think it was meant to have the opposite effect. What should we, as a drinker, try and do though?
  23. You can get meat delivered much like the organic box schemes. Abel & Cole (probably the most prominent of the veg box co's) sell meat. So too do Riverford. I have heard good things of the Real Meat Company. As long as your happy for your steak to sit on the doorstep till you get home you'd be fine. To stay on topic the sign in WR says they do take cheques. A bit achronistic I know, but cards would slow the whole thing considerably. People complain about a five minute queue now, with cards it would five times worse.
  24. From the tourists!!? ;-) I know some of those from the former colonies can be a bit uncouth but surely we don't need ID cards to prove we are not North American - merely the ability to detect irony. Whatever happened to Ministerial responsibility? If your government dept is not "fit for purpose" it is your problem. You, as the Minister in charge, are the only one accountable to the public. If it all goes Pete Tong, you should go. So goes the old adage. Recently this is no longer the case. As long as an anonymous civil servant gets the boot it all seems to be ok. An I completely agree with you Mockney, god knows what ID card data wold contain and how the govt would mis-treat it. I consider myself a Labour man, but I think this is a bit of a shambles at the moment. It reminds me of Major's lame-duck of a govt post Black Weds.
  25. First there was Northern Rock, now millions of HMRC records have gone missing. Should he now fall on his sword? Discuss.
