...but you only have him for one day. Then he leaves never to return. I wish I had George Clooney good looks....

Anyone got Series 3 they could lend me. I'll give a bottle of wine as a thank you.

Who's great but under-appreciated in music?
david_carnell replied to barrymarshall's topic in The Lounge
Ann Peebles - great soul singer with a bigger back catalogue other than "I can't stand the rain". Check out this cover of Don Dryant's "99lbs" Candi Staton - ditto and again only remembered for "Young hearts..." Here is a great cover of the country classic "Stand by Your Man" Susan Cadogan - great female reggae vocals. Adam Masterson - young British singer-songwriter who now mainly works iin the States but is currently touring. Catch him if you can. -
who is the most musically creative person in the industry

Springsteen. Going strong for 30 years with no real trough to speak of. 1970s - Born to Run; Darkness on the Edge of Town 1980s - The River; Nebraska;Born in the USA 1990s - The Ghost of Tom Joad plus Philadelphia 2000s - Devils and Dust; the new album, Magic Not too shabby. -
I think ?50-man still exists in ED though. Guys (for it is mainly men) who want to still own a physical product rather than a etherical mp3 file. Vinyl especially (and to a lesser extent, CDs) fulfill this. And they spend around The guy on the Northcross Rd market stall seems to do well with his special-ist reggae stuff so with a discerning stock I think a record shop could do well. Think more Championship Vinyl (High Fidelity nerd reference) than HMV.

That's Division Two, the Second Division - not League Two you numpty. i.e. The Championship or whatever guff they're calling it these days. You know....where you play!...for now. :))

Sorry to depart from your Premier League love-in but the hot news off the press is that Gary "The Living Legend" McAllister has been brought in as the new Leeds manager. I got a job interview this morning; and now this. Someone up-there loves me. Simon M - watch out. Leeds are BACK! Next stop - Division Two!

Punishing a club like that is sick, > they're financially @#$%& so you make life even > harder for them, nice :-S Keef, you are now my favourite forumite. Not many people have sympathy for West Yorkshire's number 1 club! ;-) Considering we lost points at the end of the previous season as well it seemed a little unfair. Let's hope Ken 'Papa Smurf Bates doesn't promote Bassett to manager. His idea of football is a game of head tennis and "who can kick it the farthest" competitions.

Oh f*ck! Dennis wise has left Leeds to join Newcastle. After Poyet left our performances declined. Unless someone decent arrives quickly, I can forsee another season in Division 3. God knows what he'll do at the Toon?!

Apparently he does not stop he merely delays movement. So you can drastically alter the pace of your run-up as long as you do not stop entirely. What a load of bo**ocks. Whatever happened to the Shearer/Unsworth/Pearce style penalty of running up and blasting it as hard as humanly possible.

:-S Am I just being very dense? Edit...Yes, I am. Ignore me.

I'm voting tactically. Paddick the Ken as second choice. I think he'll need them and there's no way I'm having that tit Johnson in charge of one of the world's major cities. What's he going to be like in a terrorist situation. [ruffles hair] oh...errr....well...ummm....you know.....there was this chap at Eton [ruffles hair a bit more]....bloody nice bloke.....had some trouble with some arabs once.....errr.....where was I...? All hail King Newt.

Poutine!? (td) Oh good god, what is wrong with you people! What happened to salt and vinegar. Cheese curd?!

And I've been fined in the past. Parked in a disabled bay [hangs head in shame]. And parking wardens are socially useful. Try getting to work on a bus with people parked in the bus lane.

-
KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > David ur doing it again... not all teen mums are > from estates wiv poor family and education! Ahhh, sorry. No they are not. However rates of teenage pregnancy are highest amongst those from the lowest economic groups. Not all. But most. And not all poor people live on shit-hole council estates. I made that up. But you get the point.

OK, what about them? They want to have have sex....badly. Using a condom is seen as uncool and sex ed to highlight the risks involved is minimal at best. Then at 14/15/16 whilst still at school they find out they are a dad. Brown pants time. Do you leave school, try and find work to support your new family; stay at school and try to get qualifications to support your family better in the long run; or decide it wasn't a serious relationship, it's not your responsibility and keep your head down. Mum is f*cked. Twice (ahem). She came from a sink estate, had little love or encouragement from her family, found a boy who told her he loved her and promised her the world if she'd sleep with him. Not realising the consequences, and to feel wanted, she sleeps with him and gets pregnant only to realise he was a to**er all along. How can you make an unqualified, unemployed 15yr old pay child support? I have no idea.

At this point I/you/we begin to get down to the base starting points of ideology. Are human beings essentially good or bad. Should government interfere (in a good or bad way) in peoples lives socially and/or economically. Are we all users of free will who suffer the benefuts and consequences of this or do we believe that external factors unduly influence the nature of peoples' lives. You clearly agree Bob that the state should play a role in supporting those who have found themselves in a despairing situation. You claimed dole for 18 months. I don't know your circumstances and I wouldn't expect you to share them but I firmly believe that should a young mother find herself without a home and job and also has a child the state should provide for them. Where you draw the line is immensely difficult and something govts have been grappling with for 50years. I don't suppose the residents of East Dulwich can solve it in an afternoon.

*Bob* Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > If I try and think about why those members of my > family all had teenage pregnancies.. I honestly > think it was just because they had nothing better > to do at the time. > > Perhaps this makes me a bad person. No, Bob, it doesn't. Perhaps, as Keef pointed out to CWALD, personal experiences can lead you to extrapolate out to society as a whole without any evidence to suggest that's the case.
-
Bob - damn straight. People shoudl be rigorously assessed for benefits and if the situation you describe is accurate (and I've no reason to think otherwise) then we all have a gripe with that. What atila is suggesting however, is that there are no extenuating circumstances should a teenage girl find herself pregnant. i.e. it has nothing to do with lack of education, poverty, lack of feelings of self-worth, broken families, social exclusion etc etc but merely the ambitions of slappers to get themselves some extra benefit money at the expense of hard workers like himself. In short - bollocks.
-
[Runs for cover; does not look back] Woah there atila. I'm not going to be the one to take you to task on it (because frankly I think in your case it would be a waste of my time) but that's not a statement that will sit well with most here. I would like to know what your remedy to this is though....assuming you're not going to bury your head in the sand over something you object to so much.

Jeremy - really? Are you serious? I could see it working on very short routes where people travel only a few stops but anything longer and journeys would be exhausting. Not to mention the elderly, those with children, etc.
