Weiss merely means "white" as in wheat beer and can be used by lots of different breweries. Hoegaarden (spit) is a weiss beer of sorts and I believe Kronenber (spit, spit) even do a white beer now. Would still be interested to know what beers the Dog and the Plough are doing though. Don't often venture down there or across there often enough.

If they did I would be stunned...and be running very quickly in that direction!

Check out their website for more info and the "Happy Gnome Song". I think you can get it in bottles fairly easily in expert off-licenses but beware....at 9%+ they are pretty strong stuff

Being a Leeds fan is much like being a buddhist dung beetle. You eat shit for so long, and tolerate it, in the hope that one day you will be reborn as the cow, and shit on everyone else.

Ah, but that is merely the name of the brewery. Which of their beers were you drinking? My girlfriend used to run an amazing pub in Surrey that sold a huge range of imported European and worldwide beers as well as micr-brewing it's own ales. Fantastic stuff. Due to which I am now somewhat of a beer geek and turn my nose up at most lagers. The stuff that the large brewery's knock-out is, IMHO, piss. German purity laws improve matters for their beers but some of the best stuff makes Fosters taste like Australian sheep dip. My list would have one or two from each category of beer: Ale - Harveys (from the Sussex brewery) is excellent and having gone to uni in Leeds I'm rather partial to a pint of Black Sheep. The EDT doesn't keep it very well though so i's not always a good pint there. Coopers of Australia do a great sparkling ale in a bottle (which you can amazingly get in Sainsburys) and Progress from the Pilgrim brewery in Surrey is par excellence! Stout - Quintine 'Hercule' stout from Belgium and Kilkenny Black. Lager - Chouffe (made by gnomes!) on draft and Triple Karmeliet from bottles Weiss - Reigle Weiss...let me know if you ever find it in this country. I've only seen it in one place.

Enough of this Premiership malarky. We all know the real football is played in the lower divisions. As a Leeds fan (*stop laughing at the back*) I am very mcuh looking forward to watching the likes of Heath, Prutton and Beckford on away trips to Leyton Orient, Millwall and Southend. The skill, the passion, the blood, sweat and..... ....oh god just shoot me now and get it over with. I've had enough pain as a Leeds fan over the past five years without this crap!

Cheers Mockney. Whilst I like my melancholy singer-songwriters, if pressed, my real love is soul. Memphis, Detroit, Chicago, Miami, Northern.....all types. I would now like to brag about seeing this man in a marquee at the Cambridge Fringe Festival last year. There were nearly more band members on stage than audience members. Everyone was within 10ft of the stage and it was, without doubt, the finest musical night of my young life. EDF, I give the King of Rock and Soul. Don't Give Up on Me Down in the Valley

*blushes* Blimey, thanks. I'll do two more then and try to continue. Firstly something equally haunting. Nick Drake's River Man. Next, something a bit more uptempo and modern: Ryan Adams with Come Pick Me Up live on the Letterman Show.
-
Following on from the funeral song thread may I present as a first time Music Room poster, Bonnie Prince Billy (Will Oldham) with . Truely haunting.
-
And what song would you like played at your funeral?
david_carnell replied to SeanMacGabhann's topic in The Lounge
I'd like "I see a darkness" but I'm not sure if I want the original Will Oldham/Bony Prince Billy version or the Johnny Cash cover. -
The Fourth International People?s Lounge (Marxist/Leninist)

The Fourth International People?s Lounge (Marxist/Leninist) - splitters! Brian: Excuse me. Are you the Judean People's Front? Reg: Fuck off! We're the People's Front of Judea Try Mme Mao for some light relief. -
Small, pink, cloven-hoofed, porcine quadriped. Answers to the name of Babe. Not known to be dangerous to humans unless under-cooked but approach with caution. Police advise that salt helps with the crackling.

Is there a fruit and veg shop that is cheaper than Pretty Traditional and the organic place opposite Barclays? Are they still called green-grocers? You never hear that term any more.

When and why did ED become so poncey?
david_carnell replied to krosfyah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
You don't have to oay any council tax if your property is used as the base for a religious order recognised by the state. Become a monk, turn your house into an abbey and your weekly bin collection is now a freebie. I am now to be addressed as "Brother David". ;-) -
At Statue Park on the outskirts of Budapest they have moved all the giant communist statues to a bit of wasteland and have a communist memrobilia store on site. When I visited with friends our purchases included (no word of a lie) a rubber Lenin mask and The Best Communism 2 on tape - all your favourite communist anthems! Good times.

Good stuff. I was in again last night with some out-of-town friends (they're from East London [spit]) and they both loved it. I think I prefer the snug end rather than the modern bit. Darndest thing though....they had the radiators on. I know July in England isn't always balmy but that's taking it a bit far! I'll have to look out for you Keef....are you permanently armed with a pint and a laptop?
-
They have a website. Looks like they have some wierd stuff. Anyone seen Falling Down with Michael Douglas when he goes in the army surplus store and the guy has swastika flags and grenades in the basement?....only in LL....sorry LA.

I went on a Monday night when a quiz was on and I must say the staff were...er...lethargic. And a little surly. But everyone has their off days and until I've been a couple more times I'm reluctant to cast a judgement in stone. Also they have a pool competition on Tuesdays, I think, which I'm well up for!

I went to the Uplands Cafe on Uplands road. Very decent indeed. Bacon, egg, chips and beans all heartily recommended.
-
Having only just moved to the area, I went on a bit of a pub crawl over the weekend. I visited the Gowlett, the EDT, Page2, The Uplands, the CPT and the Bishop. Without doubt, the CPT was my favourite. Friendly staff, well kept beer (increasingly rare) and a good atmosphere. Bottom of the list is a toss-up between the Uplands and Page 2 - both serving icy-cold ale with a sneer and high prices. The Uplands probably just scrapes home last due to my girlfriend's laughable excuse for a "cocktail" and the souless atmosphere. I'll be going back to the CPT.

I'm presuming this place no longer exists? Can you recommend the nearest decent store....i.e. not HMV/Virgin etc

Ah yes, I am in a similar position. I'd like to spend my work bonus in some new hifi kit but I have a feeling it may go on a holiday with my better half instead. The sacrifices we make, eh Mockney? The sacrifices we make. :(

I'm with you on the MP3 comment but I'll not lose much sleep over FOPP's demise. Beanos in Croydon was the place I missed but apparently it's re-opening as a sort of market place with other dealers inside. Are you a vinyl fan Mockney?
