  1. Cassius; Why would anyone bother? Because its unfair, it is about class, and it takes a big part of the responsibility, whether you have children or not, if kids are being searched in school for blades and such dont you see even a little how that may affect nice quiet streets like Melbourne Grove.
  2. About 10yrs ago there was meeting for all parents in southwark regarding secondary schools, a councillor was there for parents views about why people chose to go out the borough. It was held in whats now peckham academy. It was one of these, must do meetings where they said they wanted parents views, but he didnt listen. He was met with extremely angry parents, as at that time, not sure about now, there was no sixth form in any peckham schools. He was supposed to pass on our views at a public meeting. Parents from all diffrent schools turned up at the town hall as they did not believe this man could be trusted. They changed there agenda, where school admissions were dealt with first, as they could not cope with the angry parents, and sure enough, points that were made were not passed on, but unfortunately, being a PUBLIC meeting we were not allowed to speak. This was all going on the same time as the fight to have a new secondary school in dulwich. Many people were angry, especially parents in peckham.
  3. Gotta say although I've only 2 left at school, I was bewildered with school applications, and I hoped for my children not to enter the schooling system. But my daughter wanted to go to school and her two brothers came along to have a look, they had been home educated for a couple of years. We visited all the local schools (Camberwell) and I let them have most of the choice, hoping they would all agree on same one. I heard from most people it would be almost impossible to get three if them into a good school, but we were offered a place at all the schools we looked at. Secondary school was when I noticed, especially for the kids, who get caught up in all the panic, how stressful it is for most people. When I was growing up you went to the nearest school and that was it.

  5. Sorry off topic, didnt see the metro, but have never known there to be so little coverage, or, as like the swine flu, the usual scare tactics so common with the press.
  6. And did the police behave??
  7. Think swine flu has been a clever distraction from the usual "the anarchists are coming" headlines, that we're usually hit with round the protests at May day, no coverage in the papers of demos held, or have I missed it.
  8. Heidi hi There is conflicting opinions about taking star anise when pregnant, think it up to individuals, google "star anise pregnancy", but there are other herbs which contain Shikimic acid, one of the properties from star anise. Have a look at link above. Roche is buying up the star anise, http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2005/11/1128_051128_star_anise.html
  9. http://health.howstuffworks.com/health-illness/treatment/medicine/medications/tamiflu1.htm Tamiflu is partly synthenised from star anise, please click link.
  10. Go on be a busybody, and who knows.
  11. Is there a less dignified way to go than choking to death in a Renault 5 in East Dulwich? Choking to death in a Renault 5 in West Dulwich I suppose. Yes choking to death in Camberwell, probably would have turned into a murder hunt, with all these criminals lurking.
  12. Go for it, it makes a big difference when your new to the street to be welcomed. I moved to ed 2 years ago and my neighbours were friendly from day one, I moved from camberwell and had great neighbors there as well, it makes room for differences to be sorted more amicably, rather that escalating if you don't know your neighbours.
  13. Matthew123 I lived in camberwell for years, moving to ed recently and what you may have not felt there regardless of crime is a feeling of community. These people you talk about hanging around the green, were often the only ones to get involved or help people when shit kicked off, and most of them really friendly. They are part of the community and also have rights along with patients who have psychiatric problems, maybe the problems lie with judgmental people who insist on isolating these people instead of accepting diffrences.
  14. Matthew123 you say Camberwell has other factors at play, I dont understand what you mean, what are the factors at play in ed. Doesn't most people have expectations, even though there not met, that the police force have a responsibility for dealing with crime, and if people come together to air there grievances to local council, they also have a responsibility. Camberwell, east dulwich, same council same police force. Its not all water off a ducks back, its reality for most people who experience shit on a daily basis just nipping down to the shops, gives you a diffrent perspective, especially when you've given up on your community police to westminster government sorting your situation, and know you've got to know the people around you, not for what they look like but in order to survive. Matthew123- it is a sweeter place to live if crime for you is not water off a duck's back I really cant understand what this means?
  15. How did the complaints of crime from the people of camberwell get dealt with, they got cameras which southwark council agreed only if the shop owners would partly pay which I believed most did, but were extremly pissed off about, then there was a murder outside mcdonalds not long after they'd been installed, did they get footage? no, they werent working they had to ask etc (shop) to look at there cameras they had set up independantly. As for the police they managed to victimise what seemed like anyone under 18, treating them like criminals and eroding our childrens civil liberties, even with children who did not have a set view on them.
  16. Police ineffective? In gangs I would say there quite effective if given the order (I would say) or as others may see it given the freedom to make individual choice amongst there groups, effective in creating a bigger divide by following orders or abusing orders, it seems on an everyday basis there powers are more limited, gang mentality. As for dealing with crimes on estates it is common knowledge that many people would not even consider involving the police as it would be a waste of time.

  18. Oops cut short, I think its been shown that anti social does not only lie with the protesters, I feel the people who have control are more inclined to be anti social, violent and then when going against there own laws they are not faced with charges. Kettling is not used against violent individuals, it is a misuse of control used on peaceful protesters.
  19. I have had police say to me they are only following orders
  20. Huguenot, maybe you'd rather people go out and demonstrate when there not happy with something, these people are giving others the option of tuning in, its easy to sit talking about politics, news, that you dont agree with but to actualy do something about it and offer something to people who feel cut off from important things affecting there life, by a controlling, distorting media, it gives me hope that the "delusional idiots" are taking over the asylum.
  21. Marmora man, I have experienced kettling whilst having my children with me, I believe I have a right to protest without being treated in this manner. I have witnessed baton charges as a method to move people, violence being used by the police on innocent non violent protestors, I am not saying all police behave like this but unlike protestors police cannot make an independant decision but must follow orders.
  22. They just follow orders http://london.indymedia.org.uk/articles/992
  23. Marmora man you say kettling seems a better way of controlling the crowd other than baton charges, I am assuming you have not experienced this. there is a protest to be held against kettling; link below http://london.indymedia.org.uk/events/1066

    Chebs.......

Ratty- would that be the same norks and bristols that were having a showdown about 2 this morning? apparently they were a mix between chavvy and preppy guys. My friend was passing and saw about ten people brawling in the street. He said it was strange to see people who didn't appear to be street-wise, fighting. spose he believed the posh kids from dulwich would not have behaved like that. seems there was quite an audience.
  25. Would like to tell you who the whistler is sillywoman but we can only guess from the psycho link that its some anti social bstrd who whistles to the birds at goose, scaring the birds, interfering with the plant life but give it a week and the posters will be up with his pic.
