I know it's not strictly family-related, but it will involve family-based untidiness... Does anyone know a good cleaner in Sydenham (Forest Hill end) who might be free for a 2-3 hour a week slot any morning from the beginning of Feb? I'd rather have a recommendation if poss. Thanks!

Thanks for all your suggestions on this, wise forum people. I've been chasing this up for months, but have finally had some success by emailing Gerri Scott as spider69 suggested. I got a reply yesterday saying this: "I have looked into this matter and understand that a decision has been made by the Head of Maintenance & Compliance, and Home Ownership Services; that electrical works carried out by Swann will be reduced by 47.4% and credited to your account." I also queried some work that contractors said had been carried out, but hadn't been done, and they failed to produce evidence so the charges for that were removed too. Hope everyone else gets a reply soon, too.

Erm, this may not be any help, but it may reassure you that you're not alone: Baby Verds can only say 'Wow' and 'Dance' and she hits two in two weeks. I figure she has the basics down, ha ha, but the older generations are commenting on it. Have you had the two-year check from health visitors yet? I'm going to see what they say next week.

Can anyone lend me a car seat for a 2-year-old?
verds replied to verds's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks so much - sorted now! -
Would anyone near Lordship Lane/Plough end be able to lend me a car seat for a two-year-old from 3pm to 7pm today? I can provide a delicious bottle of wine, some chocolate or a festive surprise in return and I'll only use it for a short journey.

Has anyone had any luck with challenging this? Southwark have now provided photos and a checklist, plus a bill for ?450 for the check and ?120 for 'income supply enclosure'. Apart from saying: 'That's really expensive for half an hour's work', I feel like I don't have much of a case to argue, but wondered if anyone else was getting anywhere?

Hey Annabelle - we'd forgotten about Cheeky Cs a bit, but came along today and it was just right for my nearly two-year-old who was thrilled by the variety of toys on offer. (The poor, deprived second child!) It's a bit pricey if you take two, but I don't mind paying that price as it's well organised, not too crowded and hassley and the coffee's nice. We'll be back and hope it does get a big demand and keep going.

Has anyone got children at the local schools in FH/Sydenham? Any opinions on Kelvin Grove or St Barts?

Mobile hairdresser recommendation for highlights
verds replied to junebug's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Carly's been doing my highlights for the last six months and I'm really pleased with them. My children are always around trying to steal her foils and she doesn't mind at all. -
Ooh, are you liking it? I'm moving to that bit between Forest Hill and Sydenham in January (fingers crossed for exchanging contracts and all that!) and I'm really excited about it. I think the area's got a really nice atmosphere. Love a bit of Wells Park. There used to be a friendly toddler group in the church hall in Sydenham Park on a Friday morning, but I'm not sure if it's still running.

Big Fish Little Fish - Family Rave in Brixton
verds replied to pushpaw's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, I'd say so - when I went there were plenty of that age (and older) there. It's ace. -
Who's further up the chain? I have emailed Nick D'Cruze at Southwark Council, but have now come to a bit of a dead end with this.

Yes, I'm being charged for this too. I challenged the high cost and was told it was fire risk assessment/electrical testing works, but I can't remember it taking more than a few minutes, so it sounds like a bit of a rip-off.

Good GP/Heath Visitor recommendation for young child?
verds replied to carebear's topic in The Family Room Discussion
306 is good - the nurse is lovely with children and the receptionists always try and fit little ones in for appointments. Their health visitors are at Townley Rd. I swapped to there from DMC as I was sick of never getting an appointment. -
Miss Dannii's Street Dance is great - my four-year-old used to go to the Monday one at the leisure centre. I think it's 4 o'clock.

Living in South Norwood...what is it like ?
verds replied to JulieW's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I looked into South Norwood as I saw the most amazing house ever there - and I could afford it! But it was right behind the high street, which isn't pretty at all. And when I looked into the schools around Norwood Junction and the high street I didn't see many good reports. The best bits seem to be up around the lakes, towards Crystal Palace, and there are always lots of affordable houses available. Roads around Cypress primary, which is meant to be good, are popular. I think upwards from Southern Avenue/Warminster/Norhyrst Road seems the nicest bit. Norwood Junction has good trains. PM me if you need to know more. I did my research as I was so desperate to get the house, but didn't go for it in the end. -
We loved it too! It's one of those things where you don't feel uncomfortable if they're crying, sleeping, feeding or even joining in. My daughter's now four and still gets excited when she sees Chee around

Yes, go to the first session - 9.30-10.50 for less craziness.

Spin painting today for kids and adults! (Drop-in sessions)
verds replied to lousmith's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We popped in for a spin paint today. Even with my moody toddler in there, it had a nice atmosphere and an air of calm. -
Come further up the hill - the people in Plough DIY are so helpful and Gastronomia cafe, which used to be staffed by teenagers who would rather text than speak to the customers, has now been taken over by a really nice man who holds the door open and does a mean ham and cheese toastie. Also, the butchers up this end has no queue but some delicious meat. I also like Captured in the Rye for a chat and some toast, and they're very nice in Greetings card shop. There are a few other places mentioned earlier I don't bother going in because the staff aren't very nice.

Ha - thanks, that makes me feel a lot less unreasonable when I shove her in there! I will use some bribery.

Big Fish Little Fish - Family Rave in Brixton
verds replied to pushpaw's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I took my toddler and four-year-old to this and it was ace - great music, lots of dancing and a delicious bar. If you're a parent of a certain age you'll get a familiar feeling when you come out sweating and it's daylight outside! -
It's getting harder to persuade my 20-month-old into her pram. She does the banana-octopus-shape thingy and screams her head off. I do let her walk sometimes, but as we live on the main road I'm not always keen. I remember letting my first one walk everywhere at that age, but I don't have the nerve to keep an eye on two of them on the loose! Has anyone got any advice on how to get through these tricky last few months of needing a pram? Would a trike make the journey more exciting?

Did you have a great 2nd or subsequent birth?
verds replied to reren's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, I had a traumatic first birth and a good second one. I put it down to the lovely man in Kings who gave me an epidural second time round, ha ha. Also, the Kings midwives spotted how anxious I was at 38 weeks and arranged for me to visit the fabulous woman who runs the whole maternity show (I can't remember her name, but no doubt someone else on here will!) to take me through my birth notes and reassure me. A lot of people have said the Kings experience is a lot better than it was a few years ago, too. I spent nearly three years having flashbacks to the first birth, but after the second I never thought of it again. If you're worried, tell the midwives because there are loads of understanding people at Kings who really can help. Happy to chat if you need it! Good luck - you can do it xxx -
Pantomime recommendations please
verds replied to littlemissindulgence's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Catford Broadway Theatre - such a good atmosphere. And they have the legendary (in 2001) Richard Blackwood this year. I'm going. Might even take the kids if they're lucky.
