Thanks, that's very helpful. Moving schools is a scary thought, but it sounds like they settle quickly at that age. With my two girls faffing around, I have to leave half an hour to do anything! sugarmouse - my new place is near St Bart's, and I'd never heard of it until now. Good to hear you like it. Do you have to be religious to go there?

thanks - lots to think about. yes, I don't think we'd get a school place there easily either... And then we'd need one for her sister in a couple of years. I suppose there's no right time to move if you think about it too much!

My daughter's just started reception, but we've found a house we like in Sydenham. (Not that we've got it yet!) Settling her into school has been a bit rockier than I anticipated, so the thought of moving her to a new one this year - even if we could get a place - doesn't seem right. Has anyone else moved away and left it a while to move schools? Or not moved schools at all? I know it's not even that far away, but I just wondered what people usually do.

Friday morning - I am not bored of working on my own ...

I went in today and it's a really nice place to work and I can definitely recommend the toast... -
Anyone else having a nightmare in the mornings
verds replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We find mornings stressful, too, since my eldest started reception. I cheat by bribing them with ten minutes of telly once they're dressed - and then I go in the shower while they're watching it. I'm going all-out on bribery (oops, I mean gentle encouragement) at the moment and if she goes all five mornings without throwing a huge, screaming tantrum just as we're heading out the door she'll get a comic. We live five minutes away from school, but I start getting them out the door 20 minutes before the bell goes so I also build in time for her sister, who's nearly two, to throw a strop because she doesn't want to go in her pram. One thing I found when I was working four days a week was that my little girl really played up on the Friday, which was our only day together. I think she was just letting me know how cross she was for leaving her the rest of the time. Or maybe she'd used up all her good behaviour on the other days! -
Zippos circus - most cost effective way to get tickets?
verds replied to Goodliz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ha ha, we were at that show yesterday - I did wonder if they were real dads picked out from the audience. We got side view tickets, which are a bit cheaper, and you can see great from there as it's not that big. -

Me. I have 10-12 free from children on Thurs and would like somewhere nice to work. -
So how are your little ones getting on at Reception?
verds replied to Otta's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Mine is the most outgoing, trappiest little girl, but even she's struggling with the newness. "I hate school", "I hate the lunches", "I don't want to go all day!". I'm really surprised. I get "can't remember" as an answer to what they did and what they ate, but then she'll come out with a random fact about bears and teachery words like "topic". I was looking forward to the freedom and the chance to work in peace, but I feel a bit drained once I've dropped her off and her little sister at creche and can't get motivated. Yes, I'm pathetic! And her little sister has started trying it on with the tantrums and a will of iron this week... -

Anyone know if Captured On The Rye is open on Monday mornings? Good to hear they welcome working lurkers... -
Awful experience at GMs hairdressers :(
verds replied to Jellybeanz's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I had some rubbish highlights at GMs last year (that'll teach me to always go on special offer day), but I plucked up the courage to complain and they were very nice about correcting them. Haven't been back though! I'd recommend Shingo for cut, Carly for colour. In fact, Shingo is so good you don't need to go so often as the style really lasts. -

It's all about the supermarket brands. I love changing nappies so much I have a league: 1 Mamia from Aldi (cheapest and best) 2 Asda 3 Sainsbury's 4 Tesco 5 Waitrose (don't bother) -
Anyone know if this is open today? I have run out of things to do this holiday, but we haven't been yet!
-
Hurrah - such useful tips! Thanks, everyone. That's a good point about school lunches, so I think I'll carry on doing a proper meal in the evening. It's going to be weird without the constant chat all day long.

OK, anyone want to join me in admitting they're a little bit anxious about their little ones starting school? And has anyone wise got any tips on how to make things go smoothly? Firstly, I'm wondering how bad the exhaustion will be - and how hungry they'll be when they get home. Should I feed her little sister a hot meal at lunchtime and then do a sarny tea for both later? Should I be worried that we've been too busy having fun that she's forgotten most of the phonics she learned at nursery? Am I the only one asking these stupid questions? The holidays have been looooong, but now it all seems to be coming round too quickly...

Yes, Carly is ace. Perhaps get her to put in some darker highlights with the blonde? And if you need that Touch Of Silver shampoo, they sell it in the chemist on North Cross Road.

Bunmi at East Dulwich Dental Care, Forest Hill Rd, is great with children.

Oh yes, get on the Batiste - it's the cheapest and the best. If you want something more fancy try Bumble and Bumble, which comes in different colours so is good for out-of-control roots too. Or just wash your fringe/the front of your hair! Nobody sniff my head.

Just bumping this thread as we're thinking of moving to Sydenham. We love Wells Park and would love to move from a flat to a house, but we've just sat on waiting lists to get a school place in ED and of course we love it round here too. Anyone else got pros and cons of moving?

Major Works by Southwark Council...should I be worried?
verds replied to sedm's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We're in a Victorian conversion where Southwark owns the freehold and they haven't ever bothered us with major works. All we pay for is buildings insurance. They pretty much leave us alone - so they're not quick to do repairs, but also don't ask for money for work they haven't done. Lots better than my last flat, where the freehold was run by a private management company who loved to extract cash. -
I know this isn't strictly family-related, but has anyone used a good mortgage broker who can help self employed people? I had a baby last year, so I'm basing it on my lowest ever accounts - I need someone who knows all the deals.

We went along to try the Street Dance class at the leisure centre today - it was ace. I think it's running for the next 6 weeks and - joy of joys - it's at 4pm and you get to leave them in there and escape for 45 minutes. There were 4, 5 and 6-year-olds there and they were picking up the moves quite quickly!

Have you looked at Bespoke Cakes? Jen can make just about anything and her cakes are delicious. She posts as sunflowerbath if you want to look her up on here

Our nursery also added a mysterious 'fee', which I thought was unfair. We also had to pay for the school hols. I think some non-school nurseries do charge extra.
-
Have you tried the Peckham One o'clock club yet? I think it may be called Peckham Playroom now - it's the shed thing near P Rye cafe and has loads of toys. It's a good one to keep a baby and pre-schooler happy. Not sure of opening hours, but I think they said they would be opening all day over the hols. Oh, and welcome to the area!
