That's a really good observation LegalEagle-ish...a major problem faced by the Biotechnology industry is that it has spent such VAST sums of money in research and development that it is still trying to recoup...and consequently will go to great lengths to achieve this. Moreover, there doesn't appear to be a great deal of evidence PROVING the purported benefits of GMOs in food. On the contrary.

Others find it abhorrent that large corporations like Monsanto are able to "play God" by re-shuffling genes in the name of science. And what about the problems caused by transgenic species? Do you remember the "fish tomato" - a tomato with the gene of a fish so as to make it's skin more palatable? How acceptable would that be to a vegetarian for example? What about the implications for allergy sufferers (e.g. if a peanut gene were inserted into another species). And of course there are the health concerns ...e.g. Calgene found that mice fed on their product died within 2 weeks, Dr. Pusztai was gagged and dismissed because he found that rats fed on GM spuds developed lesions in the gut, in 2005 (Russia) over 50% of baby rats fed on GM soya died and those that didn't were stunted, again in 2005 (Australia) rats suffered severe allergic reactions to GM feed, and then there is the test performed by Newcastle University involving humans (I'll let you look that one up!). Just a few arguments against GM which do not revolve around sterility and pricing.

Another reason why people might prefer to buy organically produced food is that this is (other than growing the stuff yourself), by far, the best way of avoiding GM food. Whilst standards vary enormously between the various organic certification bodies (The Soil Association having the highest in this country), one area of common ground between ALL of them (in THIS country at least) is that GMOs should be forbidden in foodstuffs certified organic.

Baguette!? Well, aren't YOU just the epitome of "modesty" itself!;-)

Relative newcomer Valentine Warner does it for me...I just ADORE his cheeky grin and the way he stuffs his face with anything ranging from wild berries in the woods to a freshly made scone piled sky high with jam and cream...delightful...he reminds me of myself...a real glutton with a passion for anything remotely scrumdiddlylicious

Just a bit of "name-dropping"...but, I've sat NEXT to Sandy Gall (you'd have to be a certain age to remember him) on the plane, I've sat BEHIND Sandy Gall on the plane (separate occasion), I've sat opposite Brynsly Ford of Aswad at Warsaw Airport, I've sat behind Felicity Kendal at the theatre, and I've stood at the bar next to Susan Hampshire at Sadlers Wells. And as to some fame of my own? I once won some tickets on Capital Radio for the theatre and I was once pulled up on stage by a comedian to assist with his sketch (can't remember who he was though - age it's a curse)! And have been on TV (v. briefly) twice (Graham Norton Show) and Graham Norton took the piss out of my (seriously dirty) laugh.

TLS, "Mr. Ladymuck" says: "No - we were not given the opportunity to learn by other pupils as, in my class, pupils were disruptive in the main." "Yes - classes were frequently disrupted. Never being a boffin myself, I was never frowned upon. The classes were "streamed" - i.e. boffins in one class and potential disruptives in another. I was placed in the latter, so wouldn't really know...you would have to ask someone from the "boffins" class! I would say though, once leaving school (with few qualifications) I realised that something was very wrong - so I went to College and eventually Uni. to do a science degree (whilst working). Keith Graham (Mr. Reggae Reggae sauce) did alright though...BBQ sauce on supermarket shelves, his own cookery show and cookery books...and he wasn't in the boffin stream".

Telegraph Magazine Shop Awards 2009
Ladymuck replied to redjam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
For me it has to be HEALTH MATTERS...a wide range of products (given the tiny shop), dedicated and qualified owners and staff, and a fabulous atmosphere in this family run business. Something as mundane as purchasing deodorant is made enjoyable! -
I have to say, when I first read the title of this thread, I thought TLS had "snuffed it". Am extremely relieved to find his/her postings all over the place...

Many people might have difficulty accepting the regular waves of criticism he seems to "take on the chin". So, some respect from me too.>:D<. (Do excuse "ghastly emotion"...but I like them).
