  1. had to go to Cumbria the other week, (actually in the end it was cancelled), 2 of us. Train tickets ?225 each! Each! then cab when we got there (each way as it was a rural venue) Cost to drive (Hybrid, will change to EV next year) prob c. ?50. What exactly should I do/have done given the cost differential? Believe me I have no desire to spend 6 hrs each way in a car (and much of that is getting out of SE22!). Nothing will really change unless there is an effective centrally subsidised public transport system. The conservative "for profit" approach is singularly inappropriate in many cases (as those whose energy providers are currently falling over are discovering).
  2. 1 child family, 3 bikes 1/2 a hangar, electric bikes, ?1.5K, can't see it myself. Great ideal, oh as a previous poster alluded: Gipsy Hill Herne Hill Dog Kennel Hill Champion Hill Tulse Hill One Tree Hill Forest Hill ?? we need solutions that work across our society
  3. I?m not sure many if any are making a profit. Sure most would be grateful to break even.
  4. rode my motorbike to and back from work today in the city. Have never seen so much potential carnage on the way home - three different cyclists running red lights, and nearly getting hit. Appalling behaviour, many racing as fast as possible, diving onto pavements, ignoring other road users and pedestrians. I cycle too, but really? The roads are a shared resource, and it would be good for everyone to remember that and moderate their behaviour accordingly.
  5. The cynics would suggest it?s driven by the fact the operator makes more money with it closed! It?s probably not as simple as that. Multiple ownership (Southwark, Lambeth, Bromley & Croydon?) mean there has consistently been a lack of consensus on the future of the site and it?s ongoing funding. There are proposals to sell off part (of the park) for housing. It?s a desperate shame, whether you like the architecture or not the entire centre is very well used from the lowliest amateur seeking to improve their fitness right up to potential national and international athletes - a positive illustration of ?sport for all? A desporate shame the facility didn?t receive any of the 2012 games funding.
  6. trains to London Bridge halved trains to Crystal Palace, stopped entirely what is going on, I have seen nothing from either councillors or MP on these cuts. guess we are just supposed to suck it up
  7. life in the high street yet, good stuff!
  8. don't use your car (which I think most people don't want to), use public transport (which is a good thing) oh...... /forum/read.php?5,2222568,2222636#msg-2222636
  9. fits well with LTN rhetoric, halving the frequency of a public transport service!
  10. my personal favourite is the one on Melbourne Grove just to rub some salt into the retailers wounds

  12. sad loss to our retail community. its a case of use it or lose it folks, so book those tables, and buy local!
  13. Malumbo has been kind enough to DM me and we have exchanged views which are more aligned than the above posts may suggest. Given the collective strength of feeling on both sides of this argument I can't help thinking it would be more beneficial if this were harnessed in seeking to achieve equitable, practical and longterm solutions to a problem that is undeniably a shared issue, rather than the divisive dialogue that is prevalent. Perhaps our political leaders could consider this how this could be harnessed, rather than seeking to divide opinion as appears to be the current method.
  14. Malumbo, as with I suspect many on this forum, given the title and local nature of it, I find your interjections tiresome, unhelpful and of course, somewhat irrelevant given your location, which is I believe outside SE22 (correct me if I am wrong), although I admire your dedication. You simply do not, nor can not know what my personal behavioural changes have been to address the wider issue. If you would like, I'd be happy to engage via a separate post. They are, I am fully aware, not comprehensive, but I feel they are as a family, significant. So I am not posting solely with my own agenda. I am not only "concerned about air quality only when it suits your agenda" so how dare you presume to suggest I am! As a parent of an informed and intelligent (not from me!) teenager, I am rightly (and constantly) challenged about my choices and behaviour that will impact on subsequent generations, and as such am fully invested in ameliorating the ongoing and developing crisis. What I am not happy to do is to stand by and see displacement of a universal problem, greenwashed by an administration that that is committed to pursuing policy seemingly regardless of consequence with little or no consultation. The current measures, admirable as they may be in initial intention, have done nothing but exacerbate the issue for many and have divided the community, perhaps more than any previous. It is incumbent on all of us, each and every one of us, to make changes which may not always be immediately comfortable to reverse the current situation. It is also I would suggest, incumbent upon all of us to point out where changes that have been made, which may have been well intentioned but that do not serve or satisfy these aims, or perhaps in this case sadly exacerbate an already unacceptable situation. geh
  15. the fug in the air is palpable, what was a weekly clean and hoover is now needed every couple of days. what was a school bus journey of 40 minutes is now 75/90 minutes, what allowed sustainable footfall for business does not allow it now, what was not working well, is really not working at all for a lot more people. this situation has to be modified. These proposals were rushed in without any baseline testing and under the "cover" of C-19. Expenditure on unproven policies continues unchecked. A few roads benefit whilst the rest of the area suffers disproportionally. Frankly, shame on you Southwark!
  16. err, slight reality check needed here. Someone was very nearly (may still have been) killed today. It's not right, it happens in a big city, but it's not really a topic for flippancy.
  17. as an aside I have just given up my garden waste subscription and pre-purchased some brown sacks, mainly because each week the collectors fill my brown bin with the entire streets green food sacks prior to putting them on the lorry, leaving me a delightfully fragrant distillation of everyones food waste to enjoy!
  18. from memory the last proposals limited businesses to 2 permits each, not great for the larger employers in ED like.... all of the pubs & restaurants, the architects, the larger retailers, the builders, the bakers, the banks, the gyms, the physios, the...... it goes on!
  19. sad loss, Tim ran a good little joint.
  20. the last Coop refurb was to their Market Fresh format, slate floor and fresh produce, some might argue a massive improvement on what was there previously. It didn't last long, and reverted to the old format - not sure this was a corporate decision across the board, of just select stores. In my experience the store has always been problematic, it operates like a poorly executed franchise. Chaotic stock levels, de motivated staff. I'm not blaming the shop floor staff, but really Coop's area management need to get a grip, and visit their sites more - maybe this refurb is part of that process?
  21. It's true all high streets will continue to face immense challenges once we get over the current maelstrom. Increases in rates/rents/online shopping etc are well documented, however we have a special high street in ED, with generally smaller units that have historically not appealed to larger chain operators. There are positives, and there are new entrants to the market: Arapina (I think this is in the old Thresher unit isn't it? ) https://arapina.co.uk/the-brand/ El Vermut appears to have purchased a unit on Grove Vale https://www.elvermutlondon.com/ and not forgetting Kartuli who have opened https://www.kartuli.co.uk/ and also Yard Sale Pizza https://yardsalepizza.com/shop/east-dulwich/ (apologies to anyone missed) Let's celebrate these new openings (even if they don't appeal to some) and continue to support the existing and hard working retailers who have kept many supplied (and laughing) through lockdowns. And please, just give it a thought if you order online groceries/flowers/wine, your spend is not going to local operators.
  22. great idea
  23. I can't help but wonder if Southwark hadn't squandered the best part of a million quid on the Dulwich Village junction works, that now seem almost totally redundant, there might be some money to meaningfully research, review and resolve the EDG/LL junction that has been a source of potential accident and residents ire for at least the 20 years that I have lived here. It could be a sensible and long-lasting legacy for any locally elected councillor to leave!
  24. got to say our postie is lovely. Don't see him as much but he's always cheery and has a chat. this issue is not the making of front line staff.
  25. have just re-read your first post on this thread: malumbu Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You probably need a low pedestrian neighbourhood, > with pavement restrictions etc, to deter people > using WR. Are you are seriously suggesting that LTN's should be used to deter customers from patronising local business? There is quite a lot of this chat on Twitter at the min, whereby certain pro factions are aggressively targeting local traders. IMHO this is not constructive nor a good look!
