In the lonely moments when my lovely family have gone to bed, or when I hold my head in my hands and wonder how my life went so badly wrong that I was forced into a director level job, I often rue the day I decided to go to a rave and dabble in the evil "drug". I have truly wasted my life and my teenage recreations are entirely to blame. Thank you for pointing out my failure. I needed that to put me straight. I also give my own time to a charity which amongst other things deals with teens and kids for whom real substance abuse are an ever present threat, along with other societal ills such as religious fundamentalists, gangs etc and I know by now when there is a real issue and when there is not. Equally I have family members who are recovering addicts. Some alcohol, some drugs, and I know how far removed your opinions are from reality. Your logic is like saying that if you have a few glasses of wine at a meal, you will end up drinking meths and milk in a gutter. Incidentally, I am also well aware of the dangers of prolonged cannabis use, but at the stage of inevitable experimentation I'd put it down to just exactly that. Let's not create problems where there are none. I think you sound like an ill-informed, reactionary scaremonger to be frank - and by the sounds of it you've never taken drugs of any sort, so its not just us who have dabbled who might have a warped view on things.

Ricky Gervais was waiting in my tailors the last time I got a suit made. He was an utter prick. I'd made an appointment and had been a customer for years - since I first started earning a wage where you can have the odd suit made, so I was well known and long standing client. I strolled in 5 minutes before my allotted time and had my fitting as you do... Gervais was looking grumpy and pissed off when I rocked up and my arrival seemed to exacerbate his mood. He is extra fat and tiny with greasy hair and is so full of imagined self importance. As an aside I've met far bigger stars who have been usually very pleasant, but that little cnut seems to positively revel in his supposed stature. He's not a star, he happens to be famous, but the talent to fame ratio is a bit lop-sided in my opinion.

This is a tragic and harrowing story. Who knows what the problem was between Valero and his wife, but his recent history of psychiatric instability, drug and alcohol abuse along with repeated and near fatal assaults on his wife suggest that Valero was not the kind of person who we should mourn for a second, and this story can't possibly pass without mention of his personal circumstances. He has made his children orphans. The thought of two little children having only the fleeting memories of infants to remember their parents by and being taken into the care system due to the selfish acts of their father, I find anguishing and pitifully sad. God help those children. Damn you to hell Valero.

Actually Tomchance, I just clicked your link and skimmed through. Granted, I've not been through it forensically, but I do agree with a lot of what you say. The general cleanliness and environment is certainly key. Got to say I quite like the Green Party. The main parties are strictly 20th century politicians, and the public are getting fed up with refereeing/witnessing their stupid, juvenile, pointless playground spats that you would not entertain for a moment if it was two 7 year old kids. I genuinely think that The Green Party is a 21st century political party inasmuch as they tend to focus on issues rather than rhetoric. Unfortunatley it is unlikely to catch on anytime soon, but I do genuinely wish you the best.

I think that a few simple things would actually make quite a big difference. I saw a picture of Peckham Rye station from about 50 odd years ago when it had an open square at the front of it and it looked pretty smart. A bit like Greenwich and not the rat run it is now. The shops there could easily be re-housed in some of the arcade units etc. Also maybe a building/development policy which is the three things that I consider all such developments should be - socially minded, sympathetic to the overall aesthetic of the area, not necessarily of a particular era, but should compliment (some might argue that this is no mean feat) and ecologically built and sustainable. Just my two pence worth...

By the way, it has just occurred to me - and maybe one of the more legally minded professionals can confirm/challenge this view, but if the loans company is an any way acting contrary to the spirit rather than the letter of the law (by being oblique in their terms or misleading) there might be a fair few loopholes to look into. I'm sure I read of a case where this happened recently. The loan company was deemed to have acted illegally and the debt was written off. Not to want to get anyone's hopes up unduly, but I'm sure the CAB or Consumer Direct might be able to help. Just a thought...

Very sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately I can't really offer a great deal of advice, but I really feel for anyone who has fallen into this position. It is easier achieved than most people would think. Two or three twists of fate and a great many of us could be there. I do recall that my brother in law was in the exact same position and filed for personal bankruptcy. After the initial pain, stress, depression, resignation etc, he began to get his life back together and is (relatively speaking) doing a lot better now. However, he was relatively young, had nothing to lose and no dependents etc. I would stop short of offering the same advice to your relative because I can't speak for her circumstances (implications of children etc) but for my brother in law it was a clean slate, although painful at first. Really hope that she manages to battle through and come out the other end.

Logically it's peak should be 39 years, 6 months, given that the average UK life expectancy is 79, so basically 35 to 45ish? However, averages prove sod all. The average human being has one breast, one testicle, half a penis and half a vagina. I am fast approaching that middle mark and I certainly don't feel middle aged, albeit I certainly DO feel older and would no longer be considered "young" I'd say that logically you would have to subtract the first 12 years of life from the final figure, as you are undeniably pre-adolescent. Therefore the mid point between 13 and 79 is 46. Take that as the peak of middle age and add 5 years either side, I'd say that middle age should commence at 41 and conclude at 51. But like any methodology is just musing and opinion.
