In simple terms the "heave" theory is dependant on what was there first - the tree or the building. If the building is old than the tree then removing it should, over time return the soil to its original level of dessication (other factors not withsanding) and therefore close the cracks. If the tree is older than the building then removal can cause real "heave" which will result in stresses on the buildings foundations and cracking in a different manner.

Again don't really see how this is East Dulwich related however ?PoP?s advice is spot on. Had the same problem myself and a variable attenuator sorted it for me.

Surely this is more Lounge suited, apart from being overtly middle class I'm not sure what it's specifically got to do with East Dulwich.

Has anyone ever noticed the apparent anomaly in the house numbering on Melborne Grove ? The houses on the right as you head south go 80, 82, 82A, 84A, 84... I could understand this if 82A and 84A looked as if they were built at some later date but they look exactly the same as the houses either side and of a similar age. I can only conclude that they must have been built at a later date on some piece of land that was previously occupied by something else. Any local historians care to shed some light ?

Yeah road is closed between the crossroads with Melborne Grove and Townley Road/Greendale though access is allowed at this end to Hilsboro etc. Second accident I've seen near the Melborne Road/East Dulwich Grove junction in a matter of a couple of weeks, though the other one didn't look as severe.

I'll be honest, I've not read through this whole thread. However as I was walking home from the station last night it occurred to me that if commuter parking around then station is an issue then why not use some of the huge amount of waste ground where the old hospital site was to create small car park - say for about 30 cars ? Entrance could be via Jarvis Road off Melbourne Grove. It's still close to the station and there be no need for a CPZ. Obviously there are issues of who owns this site, security, charging, what it going to happen in the long term etc etc However in my view this land is likey to remain undeveloped for some considerable time so why not make it useful ? Just a thought.

I find it ironic that the council are considering cycle access from Coplestone/Oglander into Grove Vale. I put this forward as a suggestion within the council's "Cleaner, Greener, Safer" programme a few years back only for it to be rejected. If it is being considered seriously now, then for it not to be done as part of the on-going work is a clear case of council inefficiency and a lack of joined-up thinking.

The Charter School is a secondary state school located off Red Post Hill, about 1 mile from Lordship Lane, to the west of East Dulwich, roughly speaking.

Does it really matter what colour the bins are ? If the council only offer 160 litre green bins then why not request three and use one as a green bin and the other two as blue and brown bins. So long as its made clear which bin contains what I'm sure the collection staff would be able to work it out !

This is Mrs ed_Pete replying. Our son had terrible MC when he was about 3/4 (I thought it was chicken pox at first) It got so bad we were referred to Kings, but as you say there is nothing they can prescribe for it and we just had to live with it for a while. It eventually did go and he has lovely skin all over now. He is 13 and would be mortified if he knew that his mother is posting on the ed forum that he has perfect skin! Don't worry it will go. (well that was my experience anyway, hope that helps)

My wife got has had one of those on VM since January and no problems with reception so far, though she's not a heavy mobile user and most of its use has been within London.

OK it's time to fess up. As a teenager I was something of a Stranglers obsessive and spent too much of what little money I had on their records, most of which, in the cold light of day were crap. I don't want to be a wet banket but I thought that most schools so-called catchment areas are based on what Southwark regard as safe walking distance to school rather than as-the-crow-flies and therefore the map is invalid. Perfectly happy to be corrected though.

Feeling community-spirited I lent my electric hot-air paint stripper gun to a forumite back in January. After a month they hadn't returned it so I prompted them with an PM. They replied that it has stopped working and offered to buy a replacement - even sent a link to a similar model on the B&Q website. Feeling generous I said that wouldn't be necessary and said ?15 would settle it. This was back in early March and in spite of more PM's promising they would deliver the cash but needed to know when I was in rather than post it through the letterbox in case "a dog ate it" (I kid you not), I have received nothing. I have lent other stuff in the past without a hitch but am now feeling reluctant to do so in future.

Highly unlikely that you'd get in, in my experience, I'm not aware of many or any people that live on the eastern side of Lordship Lane that have gotten into the Hamlet - hence the popularity of Heber and Goodrich. We have friends that live in Trossachs Road who's son didn't get offered a place and has gone on the waiting list. No harm in ringing the school and asking them about the catchment area though. Have you tried looking on Southwark's schools website ? They ususally have a Primary Schools entrance brochure and publish the highest distance to the school for offered places.
