Cycle Access from Copleston/Oglander Roads to Grove Vale
ed_pete replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
LostThePlot - I expect there would be far too many objections from residents of Coplestone and the surrounding roads to close the junction to cars, and to be honest I would have a great deal of sympathy with them. Scotslass - you're right, cyclists do climb the pavement but as I said in my original post the point of the cycle lane would be to enable them to exit onto Grove Vale legally and safely without climbing the pavement. -
As part of Southwark Council's Cleaner Greener Safer funding, I'm going to put forward a proposal to enable a cycle lane to be established at the junction of Copleston Road, Oglander Road and Grove Vale. Currently access from Copleston/Oglander is blocked to all traffic and half the junction covered in a wide pavement from when it used to be open to traffic both ways. I'm going to suggest that the Council remove part of the pavement to make way for a cycle lane so cyclists can exit on to Grove Vale legally and safely without climbing the pavement. I'd like to hear from other cyclists who use this route as to whether or not they think this is a good idea.

Thanks for the offer Sean but have to be some other time - already committed to a Parents Quiz Night at my son's school.

Anyone used this yet ? [http://www.192.com/maps/photofinder.cfm] - much better than Google Earth (in London anyway). The level of detail is great and its pretty up-to-date e.g. those houses that were on Grand Designs last year can be seen and the hospital (or part of it) has been demolished.

Thanks for reinforcing the message Dodo1.;-)

*Bob*, why not got the whole hog and chuck all you rubbish in the street and let the sweepers sort it out. Grow up, behave and recycle responsibly.

For the first time in quite a while, I went to Sainsburys on Dog Kennel Hill yesterday and noticed that they have a "Cartons" recycling bank included in the set of recycling banks at the back of the car park. I assume "Cartons" means TetraPak (or the like) and so residents of ED, whether or not you choose to shop at JS, you now have recycling facility within relatively easy reach. For those closer to Forest Hill, the Sainsburys car park there, also has a bin for recycling TetraPak cartons.

For those of you that didn't know already, Southwark Council will collect and recycle your Christmas Tree as part of the Garden Waste collection scheme. You can find your garden waste collection day here [Waste Collection Day Lookup] From their website.. Christmas trees From January 6 to 27 2008, we will be providing a free Christmas tree recycling service. Households on our garden waste collection scheme can have their trees collected by putting them out on their garden waste collection day. Households who are not part of the garden waste scheme can take their trees to designated areas at: Manor Place recycling centre, Burgess Park, Belair Park, Southwark Park and Peckham Rye Park. We will also offer an assisted collection service for elderly or disabled residents; just contact us on 020 7525 2000 from the beginning of January to arrange for collection. All the trees we collect will be reprocessed to make mulch that will help bring shrub and flowerbeds back to life in the spring.

To poorly quote Bob Gelfdof on one of those "Grumpy Old.." programmes: "All school plays are universally shite". And in my uncharitable opinion, he's not far wrong.

Who cycles to work from East Dulwich?

Oglandia - I've been using this route for 18 months or so and I've not had any trouble yet. The closest I've come was the other week when another cyclist reprimamed me for cycling too fast and ringing my bell to alert pedestrians! It can seem a bit scary on the winter evenings but there seems to me quite a regular volume of other cyclists between 5 & 7pm - I tend to believe that there is safety in numbers. -
thats why they should bring back the routemaster, you could just hang off the back,do the deed, continue on your journey and not offend fellow passengers. ...only if you can reach the back. Got on crowded 2B at tulse hill one rush hour morning and was standing downstairs between the bench seats that were opposite each other. Woman standing next to me honked, mostly down herself and just missed me. Probably morning sickness.

Tried the stollen a couple of years ago. Not too popular in my house, we still had some left in February.

Genuine Italian Panettone, 1 kg, ?2.99 in Lidl, Peckham.

Sadly not - I imagine the one in FH is down to some agreement between JS and Lewisham Council. After all its the council that empty the recycling bin in the car park, not JS.

I always wince when I see or hear the huge, presumably diesel, truck they collect recycling in, and wonder if they either consider or know the net effect of recycling in the borough. Would you prefer they didn't conduct doorstep collections or perhaps used smaller vehicles with lower capacities that would require more miles to be covered.

Chav - your cartons may be clean but Southwark still don't want them. According to the recycling pages on their web site you should not include any of the following in your paper/cardboard recycling: Yellow pages Brown paper and brown envelopes Food and drink cartons (e.g. Tetra pak) Paper cups and plates Plastic coated paper Tissue or metallic wrapping paper Sweets or crisps wrappers Wallpaper Loose shredded paper

I've been asking Southwark for this for two years! [http://www.southwark.gov.uk/SouthwarkDiscussion/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1207] As Britvic said, Southwark are one of the three worst. Putting them in with the paper/cardboard is not a good option as it contaminates the load (surprised the prospective Green Party candidate is taking this approach) and in essence reduces the value to the recycler and thus any revenue to Southwark. We tend to get through a lot of cartons and I did actually go to my own expense to send a boxful of them to the one recycling centre in the UK (relocated to Somerset from Scotland) and then had another go at Southwark, Sainsburys and the GLA about the lack of facilities. The only option - and one only really practical to those with a car - is to use the recently added recycling bank in Forest Hill Sainsburys car park. The company that really p*ss me off is Innocent - all they friendly, funny, funky packaging that is less than recycle friendly. Rant over.
