    Funeral costs

My mother and her partner recently arranged the funeral of his father themselves. They said as well as the huge savings financially it was a hugely liberating experience and gave them a feeling of control and involvement. They also said initially they came up against a lot of resistance but that ultimately every one (mortuary assistant, crematorium etc) was extremely helpful. They hired the services of an undertaker to transport the body from the mortuary to the crematorium but that was all, they did everything else themselves. They were in a position that he died in hospital so the body was stored in the hospital mortuary, may be a problem of storage if the person dies at home. They were actually considering hiring a van to do the journey to crematorium but undertaker was around the same price.
  2. Office Home & Student is cheap because it doesn't have Outlook (email software) included in the package. You can download a trial version from the Microsoft website of Office 2010 home & student and then trawl the web to find the cheapest product-key only deal, Amazon are pretty good, they had the cheapest Office 2010 home & Business I could find recently.
  3. OMG all these people who adulterate their porridge with raisins and cinnamon. yuck. (IMO)
  4. Medium oatmeal, soaked the night before. Cooked in water with a good pinch of salt. Served with golden syrup and single cream. Aye.
  5. Although the comment about respecting Israel for 'standing up for itself' is poss taking the tongue in cheek thing a little too far.
  6. I got the impression silverfox was being totally tongue in cheek - I could be wrong. Where was the mention of Galliano before Zeban's? Unless it's been deleted.
  7. Somebody got hurt I'd say
  8. As I said - it was an economist that brought the subject up with me and I'm only asking what would happen. I'm no expert. I do however remember that when I studied a unit of economics for my degree I came to the conclusion that it is an extremely inexact science and that most economists spend their time arguing with each other as none have the answer! I bow to your superior knowledge that defaulting is not the way to go and I won't mention it again.
  9. http://medialens.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=section&layout=blog&id=1&Itemid=50 Not sure if any of you have seen this website - usually quite a lot of food for thought. Interesting discussion going on about the sustainability of global capitalism and corporate governance. The addition of 'Jesus wept' at the end of your post Quids implies that we are all stupid and only you have the answer. We are just attempting some debate - and yes you are being patronising, why should we excuse it? Don't you think the UK has a fairly wide gap between the rich and the poor?
  10. I think that your comment Sean implying a comparison between national spending to 'housekeeping' somewhat disingenuous - is looking after the country on our behalf not just a larger scale of 'housekeeping'? (quaint term). The idea of the country defaulting on the debt was brought to my attention by an economist and it seems not such a bad idea to me - all those poor big corporations and insurers not receiving income from 'owning' debt - diddums. I'm no economist or banker so I can't get into an argument about it as obviously I don't know what I'm talking about - I'll just get back to the housekeeping. Big Society - take me there.
  11. I don't know - perhaps we should all live within our means a little more. So has the infrastructure of Argentina and Russia collapsed after their defaulting? Or not?
  12. I had three miscarriages between my first and second child, hence there is quite a big gap between them. When people ask why I have such a big gap I tell them. I don't want to make them feel uncomfortable - after all, they asked, but I can tell it does make them feel uncomfortable. I'm all for being fairly open about such things but most people aren't. I recently met someone who had a hole in his throat (covered by a sort of plaster) and I asked him if it was a tracheotomy, turned out it had been throat cancer but he was quite surprised as he said most people don't mention it at all!
  13. I feel that there is such an 'us and them' attitude regarding the government. We live in a democracy and the government are supposed to be representing the people. Personally I don't feel that Cameron represents the majority sadly but then really - who would? Waynetta slob? With regard to this massive national debt - who exactly is it owed to and what would happen if the country just defaulted on the debt? What would happen?

    Jordan

I've been but it was in 1988/9 so not sure how relevant to now but we were two women (mum & me) travelling alone and we had some funny experiences but no real problems. It was an experience that's for sure. Lots to see and probably a bit more accommodating now than then. I reckon that it is still a great place to visit and especially so at this possible historical time for the middle east.

  23. Actually just googled it and it appears it is illegal to hunt with a crossbow in the UK
  24. I thought it was illegal to rabbit/hare course with lurchers? Shooting animals with a crossbow sounds particularly inhumane, I'm surprised that's legal. Not my idea of a fun weekend so I won't be joining you but whatever floats your boat.
  25. I think Sue should organise it, what day is it anyway?
