  1. The organic bananas are no longer wrapped in plastic bags.
  2. The 12 cut is big, but brings the bus times to what they were when we had the bendy buses. Clearly one of the reasons to cut the service is that passenger use has dropped along with the cuts to TfL's budget. My main concern will be that the bus stop at Barry Road is well used for passengers who come from Forest Hill who don't wait for the 197 which only runs every 12 mins at it is. It'll be busy all day when buses only pull out of Etherow Street every 8 mins instead of every 5/6.

And that's the crux of the problem, the bus service is fine if you're travelling locally, yet go any further and it's too slow and cumbersome to use as a decent alternative to the trains. The 20mph speed limit in Southwark has also been another factor in the bus becoming a less credible alternative. Don't get me wrong, buses are great for short journeys, but for anything that further than a couple of miles, forget about it.

  5. It all seems unnecessary duplication, if you live on East Dulwich Grove and want to travel to Farringdon, you can either walk to Peckham Rye as now and get the 63 and from Saturday walk to Goose Green and get the 40, while those in LL, Grove Vale and DKH lose their direct bus service to London Bridge.
  6. The bus stops on LL still don't clearly show that the 40 will no longer serve London Bridge or Aldgate.
  7. Dulwich will have SmartShop card only tills for those who use the scanners. Mobile phone users will be able to use the SmartShop app.

However, I suspect those less able to use buses will resort to cabs to get to Guy's instead which is a shame when public transport should be accessible to all considering we lose a bus route to where Southwark Council is based, plus the hospital.
  9. They've removed four of the eight larger self scan checkouts as well. Personally I think Sainsbury's has gone down since the refit. Not as much stock on sale, the reduction of the once excellent magazine section which rivaled WHSmith to a smaller selection of mags. Fine if you want a tv mag, but not if your fav PC mag is no longer stocked. Customer service is now reduced to being on the end of the cigarette kiosk as well. But what the hell, I'll be able to use a fancy handheld scanner or my phone to pay for my shopping, so that staff don't get any overtime. Deep joy.

  12. Mine was last week. One thing I can say is the post in my part of SE22 is virtually back to normal after months of dire service from Peckham.
  13. Apparently the 20mph speed limit will be introduced to TfL managed roads in the near future. This would include the section of LL between Melford Road and Wood Vale, along with major trunk roads such as the A23, Old Kent Road, North/South Circular etc. As a bus user, the service has got worse since the speed reduction. It can take 20 mins to get from the Horniman end of LL to Dog Kennel Hill off-peak when traffic is light. Not helped by the enforcement of gaps in the service where drivers are instructed to wait at bus stops.
  14. Spoke to a pregnant woman on DKH at the weekend who said she was considering going to St Thomas's instead due to the bedbugs.
  15. Most people are panicking over nothing. Accounts with under ?75k are automatically protected if a bank goes down which Metro Bank is far from.
  16. Clearly Southwark are having to monitise from their parks as well. If it's not bike rental in Dulwich Park and the festivals in Peckham Rye Park.
  17. If people really wanted Londis, they would have shopped there. Instead they use M&S, the Co-Op, the corner shop on East Dulwich Grove which is open 24/7, Organic Village or even Sainsbury's which is open until midnight six days a week. I think some people have been so used to that shop being a 24/7 shop there for at least 35 years that now it's a daytime shop, they can't get their heads round it.
  18. The Forest Hill opening was more of an event, plus it was heaving with customers.
  19. Store opens on Friday 10th May.

FH did reduce their opening hours slightly, but is still doing well. But is nice to have the choice to go to Forest Hill which is nearer to me or LL. From what I saw of the shop fitting yesterday, it doesn't look like they'll have a pharmacy, which will ensure the viability of Sogim, Lloyds and the others nearby.

I can't see how the reduction in speed is making buses more "competitive" when journey times are much longer than before. There's no reason to travel on a bus into Zone 1 during the day when the bus takes much longer to travel to Charing Cross for example than to travel via rail instead. Holding up buses to regulate the service just adds frustration to passengers who already have to leave earlier to reach destinations. All it does is alienate those who most require buses, the poorest in society and those with disabilities who can't access rail services. There may be other factors to why bus journeys are down 12% in the borough. Passengers can travel on London Overground off-peak for the same price as a single bus journey for example between Denmark Hill and Rotherhithe, a journey which would otherwise require a bus change in Peckham with a longer journey time.
  23. The only winners of the move from the 40 is Uber at the like as passengers end up spending over ?10 per way to go to Guys Hospital instead of the stress of changing buses at the Elephant. I went to Soho last weekend to see my friend's comedy show which ended up with drinks until after 1am. Now, I could have got the 176 home, but my friend insisted I got an Uber home. It cost ?25.50 home with the spike in charges, but I was home by 1.25 and the driver did 30mph on TfL managed streets.

It's pretty certain that TfL fares will rise in either May 2020 or January 2021 in an attempt to fill the plug lost by Government subsidies which used to help run the transport network, the loss of revenue from the late opening of the Elizabeth line and general revenue loss from passengers switching from the bus to other modes of transport. I can't see the Hopper fare being axed though, it's through this scheme which has allowed bus routes to be cut. Another issue that has made the bus service unreliable is the 20mph speed limits imposed by London boroughs including Southwark. There was a time when it was viable to use the bus into Zone 1, but unless you leave early or have the time to ride the bus, an 80 minute bus journey from ED to the West End simply isn't viable.
  25. It's basically a repackaged Sky Broadband. They even work with Sky routers.
