  1. Language is a fluid and evolving thing and as it changes the original meaning of words can alter to take on a new true meaning or meanings. Original meaning is not the same as true meaning. Take the word literal which is now used to mean the very opposite of how the word used to be used, irritating for some of us but demonstrates the English language is vibrant and alive and also very subjective. But I must go and make myself a cup of tea now or I will literally die of thirst
  2. But as language changes, it is no longer the "true" definition!
  3. I raise your pedantry. Language evolves and Merriam Webster gives the meaning as "drastically reduced especially in number." The word originally derived from the Roman practice of killing every tenth soldier in a mutinous army but I'm sure nobody uses the word in that context now.
  4. Had council stock not been sold off then it wouldn't have needed replacing. Whilst I agree that the prohibition on spending revenue from sales on new council housing was a contributory factor, where, in places where building land is scarce and expensive such as London, would these replacement homes have been built. Don't mention infill land! The whole right to buy issue made me so angry when it was introduced and I'm still fuming 40 odd years later. If I could see it was just creating problems for the future, how come Thatcher didn't. I suspect though she did, was more interested in buying votes, and just didn't care about a scarcity of housing impacting the next generations.
  5. Perhaps first leak was caused by a combination of faulty rendering and a hole in the felt so re-rendering was able to fix it. This course of action wouldn't solve your current problem, it does sound like a separate issue. His guarantee would only cover the rerendering not any hole in the felt. Sorry this isn't what you want to hear.
  6. Hi Joe, Unable to access any pages from the 'Discussion' tab. Down for maintenance?
  7. Must be a lot of lazy gardeners in East Dulwich then!
  8. Also known as Red Robin. I've got a lovely one in my garden. Last year the flowering wasn't too great but the previous two years it had been spectacular. Why do you hate them? They don't strike me as that offensive.

Phew, that's a relief, I thought from the title you were announcing an event a lot more serious.
  10. For fans of local history, the following has been announced in the most recent edition of the Dulwich Society enews: The Local History Group has started a newsletter to actively promote more of its research into the fascinating stories of Dulwich’s past, from the history of individual houses and streets to the people who have shaped the area over time. Subscribing is free, and you will receive new articles directly into your inbox as they are published. The first articles are already online and can be found here. https://dulwichpast.substack.com/
  11. Back at yer
  12. Excellent analysis nationally, thanks for recommend
  13. There are many reasons that properties both private and council are empty and these numbers do not signify that they could be moved into tomorrow to reduce homeless numbers. For example, in my terrace of 10 houses, one house is going through probate and another is going through a large scale renovation. 20% non ocupancy seems high until you examine the reasons why. Both will be providing homes in due course, sooner rather than later.
  14. I think you're right, they see Reform whose fortunes are rising as more of a going concern than the Tories. There was me thinking (hoping) Braverman had sunk back into obscurity. Sticking finger down throat.
  15. Yes, just a play on words, as the term 'real estate' isn't in general usage in the UK and stuck out in your post. I'm sure no offence was intended.
  16. It was popular support, the electorate, that voted him into power. As far as I know, even in Trump's America, those who do not vote a certain way in presidential elections do not suffer repercussions.
  17. Don't forget Netflix. A few weeks ago, the US issued a security strategy document warning of Europe's "civilisational erasure" due to immigration. Britain's culture however faces a greater threat from the more subtle influence of American entertainment promoting American values and the American way of life, a kind of "Netflixisation". There are many people who are happy to pay a Netflix subscription but refuse to pay the BBC license fee, so money goes into making more American entertainment while depriving the necessary investment into British programming. I wonder at the timing of the issue of the US demand for Greenland becoming news again and can't help but think it is partly a Trump misdirection of Europe's attention from the dreadful events in Minesota and elsewhere in the US. Putin of course would love it if there was conflict between the US and Europe.
  18. It doesn't say whether this will include Evri parcels
  19. Well, this thread has been great publicity for drawing attention to the items!
  20. You don't want to hopefully politely explain not to use a black bag in the recycling for fear of seeming a busybody yet are quite happy to snoop inside their bin? 😂🤣😂
  21. Walking around East Dulwich this morning there are still LOADS of Christmas trees awaiting collection both in front gardens and the pavement.
  22. I totally agree about lack of space/resources, in a way it's a victim of its own success as more and more people are using it as a collection point rather than wait in for delivery. My point is, will complaining to the Post Office bring results, though of course I hope it does, or will they just say it's nothing to do with them and to contact the franchisee?
  23. Is it still operated by the Post Office though. I took this photo of a poster in the Post Office in September announcing the running of LL Post Office would soon pass to a franchisee ZCO Limited. Is the current chaos a result of that?
  24. The Epps Cocoa factory was located in Holland Street (now Hopton Street) near Tate Modern on Bankside Since extended, refurbished, painted yellow and renamed Bankside Lofts
