Ko
Hi allI am thinking of getting one of these but having looked at them on Ebay I'm finding it very confusing! They seem really long - 30-40cm. Do people find their babies pull on them as they are the right length to be grabbed onto? Are they safe to be kept on 24 hours? Also, how do you know what you are buying is amber and not some rubbish? Any tips would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance xxx Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/ Share on other sites
nikki73
glad you asked Ko - am in the same boat. i think i saw a previous thread where mums recommended taking the necklace off at sleep times but maybe someone has another tip? i am also concerned about fakes. any recommendation for a reputable seller would be great. Dulwich Born And Bred
EBAYThe necklaces are actually quite short, the babies are unable to pull at them, they tend to fall down their back anyway rather than their front. You are supposed to remove it at night but I keep my son's on 24 hours but we co sleep so there is no risk of anything happening to him. Some parents tie the necklaces around their babies ankles at night etc in order to keep the amber necklace warm as the healing properties are supposably in the resin which worked when warmed up.You need to make sure it is baltic amber, the best. I got mine from ebay , he does pure baltic amber necklaces. Another tip, make sure the beads are rounded in order not to leave imprints on the baby's neck. The Nappy Lady
Baby C has slept in hers from about 4 months old. We never take it off, I didn't even know she was teething when she got her first 2 teeth! No idea if it is the Amber, but think it looks pretty if nothing else.I know of two suppliers who seem fibe, will post details later when on my PC.Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-298799 Share on other sites
The Nappy Lady
Retailers; These people have some lovely ones, I like the one that has all the different colours of amber on it, graduated through from light to dark, though it is often out of stock...http://www.amberstyle.co.uk/category/8/page2I got mine from this seller on ebay;Seller: blueskyairwaysThere is a listing on there now from the same person;http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/WeeRascals-Baltic-Amber-Teething-Necklace-Honey-Dark_W0QQitemZ260542901037QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Baby_Baby_Feeding_Dummies_Pacifiers_Teething_Aids?hash=item3ca9912b2dThe beads are not perfectly round on my daughter's necklace, more rough shapes, but with smooth edges, and each necklace was in a different shade of amber. I've been very happy with them and it has never bothered her at all.Hope this helps.Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-298833 Share on other sites

alice
hey just skulking around in the mummy zone but a necklace for babies ....doesnt that go round the neck...and that's left on all night....little teeth biting amber ... Dulwich Born And Bred
Alice, the necklaces are too short to reach the mouth and for the babies to bite. The Nappy Lady
And knotted between each bead so even if broken only 1 bead comes off.I took it off initially but after seeing her wear it for long enough to know it was fine left it on full time. As H says too short to bite (not how they work). I just applied common sense, I wear a short necklace in bed and it has never ever bothered me, so why would this on a baby. The way they work they can't twist or anything.Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-298940 Share on other sites
sillywoman
So how do they work? I'd imagined that baby would be gnawing on the beads to soothe the ache of teething - if not, then what? Honestly curious - and very jealous that I didn't know about these when mine were babies. They look so lovely. The Nappy Lady
Theory is that the amber warms against the skin and gives off tiny amounts of something(very techy me!) that eases teething pain. The websites that sell them explain it better.I wasn't convinced but have to say C hasn't appeared to suffer like O did so I do think there is something in it.I only discovered them when O was about 2 Sillywoman, was very sad not to have known about them for her too, thank goodness I got my baby C in the end!!!Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-298975 Share on other sites
Belle
Got mine from this place. must admit we gave up using our's for a bit as wasn't sure was making a difference but have recently started again, think in retrospect what we put down to teething was just general temperament...but is def teething again, waves of pain resulting in not much sleep for any of us!http://www.myriadonline.co.uk/wooden-felt-rattles.php[/url] Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-299026 Share on other sites
taper
Surely this is nonsense, like crystal healing? All the "explanations" I've read are pure woo. The Nappy Lady
Maybe Taper, that's what I thought initially, but they look pretty anyway and my 2nd has certainly teethed better than my first.Who knows!Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-299175 Share on other sites
Belle
They're very much the norm in France and Switzerland, so much so that my French friend asked where our little boy's necklace was when we visited her, as he wasn't wearing one at the time. I think of it as being a bit like those copper bracelets people wear for rheumatism. And teething is so awful, i take the view that anything is worth a try, so what if it's rubbish - doesn't do any harm to try. taper
Putting a necklace on a toddler sounds risky to me. And given that I can see no explanation for why it might work, or indeed evidence that it does work, it's not something I'd recommend. sillywoman
Yup, & you could be run over by a bus as you cross the road tomorrow. Living is risky, the level if risks each person chooses as acceptable to them & their children is a purely personal decision. "one bead could choke" - that way madness lies for me! Belle
I find it hard to believe that those mums who've posted here who've used amber necklaces (including me), and the many thousands or more who use them worldwide are all hugely irresponsible and taking some massive risk with our children... The Nappy Lady
Well said Belle, each bead is smaller than an average pea, and the necklace clasp is designed to break under very little pressure. I am sure that if a child had ever been hurt through wearing one of these it would be all over the Internet for us all to read. But we live in a world where you hear of parents drying each item baby eats with on an individual piece of paper towel, or not letting little ones crawl around in public places for fear of germs. As Sillywoman says each to their own, I am happy with my choices.Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-299360 Share on other sites
alice
O come on - you mean you all buy those cheap teddies with pop off eyes - small bits are dangerous - end of - that's it from me tho' - i've a feeling i'm becoming incredibly annoying. The Nappy Lady
Hi Linzkg,Yes, just keep an eye on him - can't recall which one you have, but the ones with bells on are not quite as strong as the other ones. The Breast Buddies ones are really strong, tested to very great strength so don't think he'd break one of those.Glad he likes it!Molly Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/10082-teething-and-amber-necklaces/#findComment-299532 Share on other sites
