Sandpits

Does anyone know where you can get sand for a children's sandpit locally?

I was about to buy some on Amazon but then they wanted to charge me ?35 for delivery - so the sand would have cost more than the sandpit itself!

Any of the local garden centres. Which ever one is closest to you. They often stock special sand for sandpits.

Following on from this has anyone any tips on making a sandpit? Do you have to line it or can you just dig a big hole and fill it with sand?

And having made one will it just be used by all the local cats and foxes as a toilet?

Jamma, dunno re: question one as some lovely forumite sold us our plastic one, but the answer to your second question is a definite yes - so you'll need a lid. But you'd need a lid anyway, as wet sandpits are no fun.

Jamma, Argos do a plastic 'shell' in 2 halves very cheap - you can fill one half with sand and use the other half as a lid, but it doubles as a paddling pool in the summer - no blowing up and wick to fill with buckets of warm water (Im too soft I know!!).

Not very pretty, but a very quick and easy solution, you could bury the bottom half to hide the plastic a bit if need be.

We found a really inexpensive plastic sand box, shaped like a dinosaur (I think?) at Toys R Us (Old Kent Road) last year. It came with a lid. I think it was ?15?

Could also be used as a little pool. Maybe worth checking out........ they have online catalogues.

Thanks. Yes I see Toys R Us advertising a sandbox today about ?15. Got to be worth it to avoid digging a big eff-off hole in the garden all weekend instead.
