Has anyone had to take their wedding dress abroad before?

We're flying to Bermuda next week for our wedding blessing and I don't want to put my dress in the hold of the plane - I'd rather have it as my hand luggage.... has anyone any advice on how it's best transported - in a large suit carrier or a small suitcase - or maybe a box?

Any advice gratefully received......

Thank you!

I took mine all the way from London to NZ as handluggage - it was in a big white plastic dress carrier which folded up on itself to form a bag. On the flights (Singapore Airlines) they were really accommodating and hung it in the crew uniform area so that it hung down straight.

I've never had so many people talk to me in an airport before, was definitely a talking point while in transit in Singapore. And we got lots of champagne from the air stewards too :))

stick the dress on a hanger, bung it in the bag, take as hand luggage...

Thanks for the advice... my dress came in a white plastic dress bag which folds over (sounds like yours Pickle) but I didn't know if they would let me have that as hand luggage...

I like the idea of the boxes but they are so flippin' expensive!

Traveling with BA - so I hope they are nice to us!

Lovely AllyCat,

I have flown first Class to Jamaica - about ten years ago, and when a bride checked in with her dress, she was automatically upgraded with her groom (naturally I complained). Further, they hung her dress carefully in the special closets they have in first.

What I would recommend is that you purchase an over the door hanger for in the hotel. You know, something like this, but for a very thick door - just to make sure that you can let the dress spread out when you arrive.

    • Hello! We are relocating abroad and so will be withdrawing our two children (ages 4 and 6) from St Dunstan’s College (Catford). If any family is considering enrolling children of a similar age, now would be an excellent opportunity—we’re required to pay full‑term fees unless the places are taken. Please get in touch if you’re interested or know someone who might be. Thank you!

    • Hi, I saw your post and just wanted to say that the incident you’re referring to did happen in the late 1980s at Dawson’s Heights. The person involved was named Carl Salawa, and he had just turned 18 years old at the time. Like you, I haven’t been able to find any news articles or official reports about it, If anyone remembers anything more about that time or incident, I’d really appreciate hearing about it. Thanks for sharing what you were told—it means a lot to know others remember.
