Hello,

About 10 mins ago (22.20ish), there was two huge bangs coming from either Oakhurst Grove or Tyrell Road. (I am in my bedroom, and couldn't work out the exact direction of the noise). I got a terrible fright and thought they were gunshots at first, but as I don't hear any sirens or indeed screaming, I am guessing that thankfully I was wrong. Did anyone hear it? Am I going mad? Can anyone tell me what it actually was?

Ta!

Every so often on Barry Road there are two to three very loud explosions which seem to come from, to my ears, the midddle of the road.

It seems (only seems mind) to me that they may be some kind of floating down and then timed detonation style of thing.

That's just my impression though, it's been happening for a few years now.

I used to get alarmed and look out of the window, but now I start at the first report and await the others with equanimity.

Christ, I'm fairly draped in ennui this evening, still, they can't touch you for it.

Its the East Dulwich Road Alcemist.

Every so often he puts in a little too much of the philosophers stone and BOOM!!!

Poor sod staggers into the road, covered in soot, star covered gown and pointy hat shredded and smoking. Quick half in the Gowlett;

then its back to the cauldron.....

...before he jumps on a plane and completes a European tour as lead singer and only flautist of Jethro Tull.

>I really wish there would be some legal restrictions on when you can let off fireworks.

There are: not allowed 11pm-7am, except for a few prescribed holidays. There are also restrictions on the size/type that can be supplied to the public.

There's a pretty good summary here: http://www.sutton.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=379

I didn't realise there were some laws. Whoop di doo. Those restrictions are not enough. So that means that you can let them off whenever you like before 11 pm? Ridiculous. They should be heavily controlled. In the run up to Guy Fawkes and Diwali they go off all the time from afternoon onwards. There are idiots out there using them. I like a nice organised display on appropriate days but not random a-holes letting them off because they are showing off to their mates. And I did hear those fireworks go off the other night and I am down by Grove Vale.

    • I’m not a Gail’s fan but there’s no reason a business shouldn’t open on Christmas Day. However, nobody should be compelled to work the day which, given the widespread coverage of Gail’s questionable employment practices, has to be a possibility here.  The only business I ever use on the 25th is maybe a pub and that’s a rarity these days but buses running would be very welcome for visiting etc. But the swings in the park should definitely remain chained up. Are parks even open on Christmas Day?
    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
    • Well according to a newspaper article, Gail’s is opening 10 shops in London,,, yup Dulwich is named 10/5 I seem to recall with others in London opening at 7 am…!, Guess that is to capture workers coming off all night shift. Offering free mince pies until they run out.. So very sad to hear about Romeo Jones… been a customer since the opening, any idea where Patrick has gone or details… please pm me.    What is going to be in its place…. Will be around in Jan…umm village is changing….
    • interesting the police said "the car was in demand at the moment" what make/model is that?
