This heat

I know we shouldn't complain, but does anyone else find this heat unbearable, difficult to keep your home cool, and to sleep at night, with fans on and windows open. I would love to lay in a heap of snow right now. Roll on the winter.

On the flip side, some would love the sunshine and a decent summer. I'd love to sunbathe and swim constantly from June to September in man made lakes and beaches. I'd save a fortune in travel costs as I like to chase the sun.

There was one v hot night when I couldn't really sleep (maybe Wednesday?) but apart from that it's fine. Shame we had to wait until the end of the summer for some sunny weather.

Too hot for me. A summer of 24 or 24c with hazy sunshine, low humidity and a light breeze would do me from start of June to end of August.

I live on the ground floor and on hot nights I dab Vick or China oil (peppermint oil; tiger balm would also work) on my temples, neck or top of the head. The menthol is volatile and creates the sensation of cold. Not suitable for small children though as if it gets it in their eyes it stings.

A friend swears by soaking a small cloth in cold water and draping it over part of the body, but I find it a bit of a faff. Bowls of water close to the bed might help if you can get a breeze going, either a window or fan.

For a bit of respite during the day, go for a stroll round an M&S foodhall. It's like Narnia before the return of Aslan in there.

If the front of your house gets the sun during the day, close the blinds/curtains (I also hang big towels over the back of the closed shutters to prevent more heat building up) and open open windows at the back of the house (and vice-versa). Open the front windows once the sun sets. (I think I read that on here somewhere and tried it and it works.)

Thinking about it, perhaps you could put a sheet, pillow or whatever you plan to wear to bed in the freezer, or chill a hot water bottle, or put your feet on one of those cold packs you use for picnics. If it's hot tonight I might try one of those and see what happens.

FJD Goose, as for "This Heat" it is probably a lot of fun for the band playing that music, they might think they are great, as for listening to it, it's just a lot of head banging noise, couldn't hear what they were singin' ??? I could only stand 30 seconds. Probably targeted at a younger audience.

I think they had a lot of fun playing their music , nowt wrong with a bit of headbanging noise now and again. Wouldn't describe this ad that though.

It's the loons I see wearing coats in this weather I can't fathom. What heating system do they operate under? I'm not talking elderly, but young looking folks, buttoned up in fairly heavy jackets.

Some people like the heat - look at the English cricket captain Alistair Cook who actually performs better.

Personally I'm unfazed and sleep under a duvet and wonder around with a jacket during the day.

The other ten months of the year I'm freezing and wearing three layers.

Consider yourselves lucky you only have two months of it.

Jah Lush - spare a thought for the goths of Brisbane and Perth then, and let me assure you, there were plenty of those around when I was growing up.
