AB; Can you not come up with any other privaetly owned businesses which remain in the hands of the owner? Morrisons perhaps? Body Shop (may have been sold now)... Owner interest is not the point, look at facebook!! A chain is a chain, however you want to dress it up in frilly knickers.

Louisa, you've insulted me on a few occasions before and I'm not going to sink to your level and argue with you on a public forum. So don't be expecting an apology. I think you've given yourself enough rope to hang yourself anyway.

Oh! and thanks for the support Sean, you're a top bloke and a master of diplomacy.

I have NOTHING against chains, I made that point earlier. I love Iceland! My objection is toward the way in which a chain, notably White Stuff, has tried to give the impression they are somehow different and not a typical High Street name! They came to LL and will path the way for other chains. They are expanding, and they are in no way an independent small group of shops. Offering discounts and trying to pretend they love ED is my biggest issue. Plus the fact they think they can charge loads more for the same tat you could get at Primark for half the price! (that does not make them ethical btw)

Jah previous post was flawed in so many ways its not even funny. Maybe you should work for the marketing department at White Stuff (maybe you do!). Firstly, can you give solid examples of direct insults from me to you over this public forum. You made this public, not me. I've given an example above. Now it's your turn!

How exactly have I given myself enough rope to hang myself? I was posting again the manner in which White Stuff tried some underhand promotion. You took it upon yourself to use my respone to that as a way of personally attacking me, and I am sure I have made that very clear now, and no doubt Sean will be able to see that too.

What about the likes of Innocent (smoothies), Abel & Cole (organic foods), Tyrells (crisps). All some of the fastest growing British companies, all selling their stuff in East Dulwich. Success through strong products is good - let's support it (you never know, ED might just be the next White Stuff).

F**king hell, some people really do need to get a life (mentioning no names)! Who gives a sh!t what shops are on Lordship Lane, it's a long road, if you don't like a shop, ignore it and go to another one!

There are plenty of places around East Dulwich that I'm not overly keen on, but I can't be arsed wasting my life getting stressed about it, there's enough to get stressed about at work, without adding more...

Surely the whole "is it a chain/isn't it a chain" is a bit of a red herring. Some chains are multinational conglomerates exploiting poorly paid workers in the Far East to sell low quality t-shirts at very cheap prices. Others aren't. Frankly I couldn't give a toss whether the store I purchase things from is privately/publicly owned, has 1,2 or 300 branches or anything else. If it sells stuff I like at prices I can afford and doesn't (as far as I am aware) overly exploit its workers then it's fine by me. And let's not even start on the debate about when a worker is "exploited". Whether White Stuff fits the bill or not I don't know but I'll be having a look because, to be honest, I've not found anywhere else in ED that sells decent quality mens' clothes.

And, incidentally, to describe a chain which is entirely UK based apart from 2 stores in French ski resorts as a multinational seems a little off the mark to me.

Louisa

I don't think it's a personal attack to describe you as regularly not having anything nice to say - and I say that as someone who often defends you! - you even go on to admit as such (albeit in a sarcastic way) that you value being negative above more balanced criticism as you perceive that to be more "real" - so I'm not sure what anyone would be apologising to you for

The White Stuff post that upset you so is a case of damned if they do and damned if they don't. By posting and engaging, WS are condemned as con-artists trying to hoodwink us. If they DIDN'T post then they would be a faceless chain ignoring the local community

The merits of WS themselves have been discussed by most of us in the earlier thread so there is little NEED to actually get so upset all over again (IMO)

And besides the sun is shining outside... ;-) Might still be on Friday if you come along to the drinks. Come on.. you know you want to..........

Sean you are missing the point I think. Jah made a very personal comment about myself and the things I have to say on this forum. I did not initiate any sort of personal attack on Jah. I admit I do say a lot of negative things, but only when I feel I need to. I do not go around pointing out to other posters they have a lot of negative or positive things to say, so therefore I must be being monitored by Jah. Who incidently claims I have now made a couple of personal attacks, even though non of these have been substantiated.

I then am accused by you of making a personal attack on Jah. You failed to point out Jah had made the attack personal in the first place, not myself.

White Stuff can post if they wish, but getting hold of an employee and using a free website to promote and advertise in a 'personal' way, makes them come across as sneaky and not quite what the label says. That was all I was trying to say, and then find myself personally attacked by someone who then shys away from the disagreement by getting you to defend them!

You point out you have no 'sweatshop bargains' - does this mean you will be selling overpriced goods for yummies and their offspring? Where do other people go to buy clothing? I shall be coming in for a cup of tea, and you can have a piece of my mind whilst i'm in there!

"Where do other people go to buy clothing?", errr the same place as they always have done, there isn't anywhere in East Dulwich to get clothes at the moment is there? I was always left disappointed when I tried to buy a t-shirt at the glass place.

Louisa, I think calling them sneaky is a bit over the top. It's not as if they sent an employee on here incognito to pretend to be a 'normal' forumite and big up White Stuff. And as far as I can tell, there was nothing untrue in the original post. The company is owned by its founders (at present), and does try to distinguish itself from the normal High St chains. And like it or not I'm afraid that trying to prevent the "gentrification/poncification of ED" is probably going to put you on a par with King Canute or Sisyphus. But full marks for effort.
If being like Kings Road was the inevitable outcome to White Stuff opening a shop here I think I'd move now! But hopefully the fat bankers with their eastern european trophy girlfriends will be too scared by the proximity to peckham to waste their weekends crawling up and down Lordship Lane in their ferraris and porsches...

>>"Where do other people go to buy clothing?", errr the same place as they always have done, there isn't anywhere in East Dulwich to get clothes at the moment is there?<<

Well there's Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury's now of course, and that small shop on Grove Vale: and the various charity shops: and that sawn-off Agent Provocateur-type place near Green & Blue.

Myself I get all my clothes either online or on holiday nowadays...

Yes, no more oppressing the English working class by preventing them from oppressing the working classes of other countries

    • Real shame they went under. We have a rectangular table (that we are keeping) which is great. I would set some ebay search alerts if you haven't done so already.

    • If this is approved BT will probably apply to remove the phone box. These cost far more than they earn and are very vulnerable to vandelism. The old phone boxes are not ideal to become WiFi hubs, and will need the same level of engineering work to convert (they will be connected over copper). And they don't offer the advertising opportunity which pays for the free WiFi.
    • They're big and ugly electronic advertising boards. There's a shagged out phone box across the road that could do the same thing!
