Surely most of this is attributable to the financial crash in 2007-8. There was always a risk after that of a 1930s style resurgence of extremism and 'populism'. In order to avoid it you'd have needed diligent government focusing fully on social equality - we certainly didn't get that in this country.

I tend to agree with you Jenny. The danger now is that Trump will take America into isolationism which I understand made the Great Crash of the 1930s so much worse.

There is a frightening tradition of using war to distract people from problems at home and unite them by identifying a common enemy. America also used the first three years of WW2 to pull themselves out of the great depression economically. As Trump's - successful - campaign so far has been based on hatred, this is looking all too likely as his approach to foreign policy.

@ Uncleglen - that article is vacuous - it makes the assertion claims that there is / could be a better system than democracy but provides no reason for thinking that there might be, only that the current system has some bad features.

He says that democracy is the "least-bad system of government". The more accurate and more perceptive quote is Churchill:

"Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

ie we keep coming back to democracy despite its flaws because the alternatives that have been tried have been much worse: aristocracy, autocracy, communism, anarchy, ecclesiastical, Maoism, etc.

Indeed, Hillary was hardly a dove, but Trump has stated he has no problem with first use of nuclear weapons, particularly against ISIS (he didn't explain how you nuke an amorphous terrorist organisation), he wouldn't rule out using a nuclear first strike in Europe (because "it's a big place") and he's happy for Japan, South Korea and Saudi Arabia to become nuclear powers. This is a whole new level of lunacy we've got right now.

A cold wind is whipping up in the anglosphere.

Watch the supreme court in the US become more conservative (Trump nominates now),

Maybe, just maybe he'll get in a decent team (Farage has applied so maybe not)

Just a thought .the polls said labour would win the last election.wrong . Referemdem remain would win. Wrong.us Clinton would win .wrong if government called snap general election labour would be crushed ? And worse of all ed balls .can't win strictly?

I for one am pleased as it has helped me rediscover some great protest music. I am clearly not pleased about the impact on world economic and political stability, those in Aleppo, equal rights (so much that we have changed in my lifetime).

But here's a great one that can be equally applied should the result have gone the other way. This is class, and on a bizarre morning has to bring some smiles to dumbfounded faces.

Bernie Sanders was cheated out of the running by Clinton and her entourage who manipulated the DMC in order to secure Clinton as the candidate. A fair percentage of those that were going to vote Sanders obviously didn't vote for Clinton due to this, hence Trump Trumped.

Yes - and even, surprisingly, a large number of Sanders voters may have voted Trump: when Sanders lost out surveys showed a significant percentage of blue collar workers had Trump as their second choice, seeing them as the only two non "Washington elite" candidates, no matter what party.

Wonder if Clinton and Podesta are regretting their early 'Pied Piper' strategy of supporting the most conservative candidates possible (as leaked earlier in the campaign). Wonder if Clinton is regretting her long standing association with "second daughter" Huma Abedin.

    • Where did I say he did a good job? Yup and Corbyn was very close to Len McCluskey and funded by Unite wasn't he...they're all as bad as each other... Labour have to purge their party of the far-left - they're a disaster. Allan Johnson summed it up so well on election night in 2019....
    • Thank you for the detailed advise @trinidad It is definitely damage we are concerned about. I don’t think Evri would agree to pay the bill to fix our gate or letter box if they were to be damaged as a result of their delivery drivers helper. Our doorbell can be heard from outside when rung so we don’t quite believe the aggressive simultaneous door/letter box banging is necessary. It can be quite a shock it is done very aggressively.  I’ll definitely action the steps you’ve kindly provided along with a phone call tomorrow. I do sympathise with the role drivers have and how busy they are, which is why we tried communicating directly with her but sadly we haven’t succeeded
    • What outcome would you like? Disciplinary action? Not to have the driver back? Retraining? I know there is alot of pressure on drivers to deliver within a set day. if he slams the gate, is it evidence he is causing damage, or is the noise a irritant to yourself? You could put a sign up or buy a signing asking to close the gate gentle???? can you hear the door bell from the door? he might be ringing, not hearing and therefore knocking. In trhe notes section of the be livery page, there is a note section, although there is not 100 per cent these notes would be read as these drivers are constantly rushing.  I did a google search for you, i found this and you can try the envri website Contact Us | Evri   To complain to Evri, you can follow these steps: Contact Customer Service: Call Evri's customer service at 0330 808 5456 for assistance with your complaint.    1 Write a Letter: Address your complaint to Capitol House, 1 Capitol Close, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 0WH.    1 Use the Official Website: Visit the Evri complaints page on their official website for detailed instructions on how to submit a complaint.    2 Email or Call for Specific Issues: For issues like missing or damaged parcels, you can email or call 0800 988 8888, which is free to call.    1 These methods will help you effectively communicate your concerns to Evri.   My driver is called anthony, he is brilliant to be honest. I cant fault him.
    • When I have more time and energy, I will look up the actual number of votes cast for each party in that election, rather than the number of seats won. I'm interested to see that you apparently  think that  Boris Johnson did a good job of "leading the country through Covid." Is your memory really that short? I won't stoop to calling Johnson and his cronies names in the way that you seem to think is appropriate for left wing politicians. At least the left wing politicians have some semblance of morals and a concern for people who aren't in some over privileged inner circle and/or raking in money for themselves on the back of an epidemic. I'm not going to open a can of worms on here  by commenting on the disgraceful so called "purge".
