Bob Marley at Crystal Palace concert bowl 1980. Tripping off my skull, took me to a higher place.

The Who at both the Charlton gigs '74 and '76.

The Rolling Stones at Earls Court and Knebworth '76 and last year in Nice. Agree with you Sean on the '90 gig, poor sound and Ron and Keith were out of it.

Sex Pistols at Finsbury Park '96.

The Clash at Victoria Park in '78.

Primal Scream at Cambridge Corn Exchange early '94.

I could go on forever here but I'm off down the pub. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!:)-D

I saw Pink Floyd at Knebworth in about 1974/5 (I was v young at the time but remember it vividly) I believe they are still doing roughly the same stage show to this day.

also saw Bob Marley at the Rainbow and Hammersmith Apollo around the same time and remember that vivdly too. I loved him.

Talking Heads in '77 'Psycho Killer' time. That was a wicked gig.

"I could go on forever here but I'm off down the pub. See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!" - Pah! I'd much rather be at work... :-S

Best gigs

Eric Clapton & Ringo Starr at a Private gig in Hampshire

Tom Jones & Van Morrison at Blickling Hall

Saw the View at Shepherds Bush standing next to the lead singer from Dirty Pretty things and Tim Lovejoy

Fratellis at Brixton and also the Kaiser Chiefs

Not my best gig, but one I am certainly the most jealous of is my Aunt who saw the Beatles at the Cavern.

There's quite an eclectic mix on here

EW&F - Wembley Arena, sometime in the late 70's truly awesome brass section. In fact on the subject of brass sections, Aswads when they played The Venue in Victoria were pretty good too. Thin Lizzy on the Live and Dangerous Tour at Hammersmith, likewise Funkadelic and Chic at the same venue. Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Prodigy in Moscow. Pavorotti in Bucharest with Ceaucescu Palace as a backdrop and more recently Zero 7 at the Academy. If I had to choose the most memorable it would be Stevie Wonder on the Hotter Than July tour when Marvin Gaye and Diana Ross turned up as surprise guests.

Personaly I think U2 have had a few absolutely great songs, and a load of sh!t ones. Bono is a gobshite. The Edge is pretty cool, but if he took his hat off he'd just look like a bald pikey.

Just realised this would be better placed in the U2 thread, so putting it there too.

I remember seeing some great "pub rock" gigs back in the day and some of them were quite local too. For instance on the other side of Peckham Rye there used to be a pub called the Newlands Tavern. I don't know if it's still there, in fact I think it's long gone but I remember seeing people like Kilburn & The Roads, Doctor Feelgood, The Heavy Metal Kids and Upp there. The great Jeff Beck played in there one night too. And I saw Wreckless Eric do a blinding set in the Thurlow Park Arms around 1980.

I grew up with The Hamsters at the Baldock Buffalo Club.

Mind you, I got served and could smurk fags without getting thrown out, and the smell of stale beer, sweat and RAWK, was pretty mind-blowing for a fifteen year-old lordship estate boy.

The joys of growing up in the sticks huh?

Just remembered another one - how could I forget!

A mate of mine is neighbours with the remaining members of the Kinks. Every year they play a gig in Tufnell Park and apparently (it has never happened when I've been over the past two years) Ray Davies has been known to turn up for a couple of songs. Anyway, because Simon knows them all so well, we always end up in Broxbourne and go for a curry with them. Most bizarre - particularly when they start talking about the "old days".

Rock n Roll! B)

I go to A LOT of gigs but (off the top of my head) here are some of my best in recent years:

Prince @ Koko in May

Foo Fighters @ Underworld in Camden last year

Annie Lennox @ Sadlers Wells a few years ago (she?s amazing live)

George Michael in Antwerp in June and Earls Court last year

Bruce Springsteen in Valencia, Spain last October

Rolling Stones @ Circus Krone in Munich (tiny, tiny, intimate gig)

BB King @ the Albert Hall a few years back

The Who @ The Forum

U2 @ Earls Court ? the concert on the night of the day Bono?s dad had died ? he played an amazing gig

Cream @ Madison Square Garden 2 years ago

Worst gig ever for me

U2 at Staples Centre LA about 2 years ago ? should be ashamed of themselves ? like a bad karaoke night ? we left before the end

Gigs in my diary that I?m looking forward to

Bruce Springsteen @ O2 in December (possibly Paris too) ? the man is my personal God

Prince @ O2 on 16th September

John Mayer @ Albert Hall on 18th September

Paul Weller @ Astoria 30th September

Jose Gonzalez @ Union Chapel 23rd October

The Verve @ Roundhouse 9th November

Cesaria Evora @ Royal Festival Hall 17th Nov

Amy Winehouse @ Brighton 26th November (if she?s still alive ? poor lamb)

I will definitely post any up and happening gig news here.

No I don't work for Stargreen. It's just an agency that not many people have heard of so it tends to still have a few tickets when others have sold out.

I saw David Bowie at Hammersmith a couple of years ago when he did that whole Ziggy Stardust anniversary gig - he was great and a friend of mine was down at the front recording it (naughty I know). I listen to that bootleg all the time.

Was that in 2002 (the Hammy Bowie gig) when there was another tube strike?

3 hours he played that night (best part of anyway) - I was 2nd row - marvellous

Asset - too right about downhill after Serious Moonlight. UNTIL.. 1993 or so. Buddah of Suburbia album onwards are some of my favourites. But dear god the 80s were bad for him

    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
    • Nothing to do with the topic of this thread, but I have to say, I think it is quite untrue that people don't make human contact in cities. Just locally, there are street parties, road WhatsApp groups, one street I know near here hires a coach and everyone in the street goes to the seaside every year! There are lots of neighbourhood groups on Facebook, where people look out for each other and help each other. In my experience people chat to strangers on public transport, in shops, waiting in queues etc. To the best of my knowledge the forum does not need donations to keep it going. It contains paid ads, which hopefully helps Joe,  the very excellent admin,  to keep it up and running. And as for a house being broken into, that could happen anywhere. I knew a village in Devon where a whole row of houses was burgled one night in the eighties. Sorry to continue the off topic conversation when the poor OP was just trying to find out who was open for lunch on Christmas Day!
    • We went to Chern Thai for lunch on Saturday, as we have done quite often, and they were closed, with no sign of life. The sign in the window still says Saturday 12-3, and there was no indication that they would be closed. Can anybody shed any light? We went to Chilli and Garlic on Zenoria Street instead. Their falafel salad bowl is amazing (and amazing value!) but we had been looking forward to a Pad Thai and a pint of Singha! ETA: I am reviving this thread because it is/was  specifically about Chern Thai's opening times!
