This thread shortly to be renamed "Guilty Pleasures" methinks

Tillie - your anti-snob comment says it takes bravery to stand up to popular opinion but then you state that the popular opinion is against popular music... I'm confused! ;-)

Music will always be the most entertainingly divisive issue though - but in a harmless way.

A good song is a good song is a good song - be it obscure or popular. But popular doesn't necessarily equate to good surely? (hello Sun newspaper.. hello Every Thing I Do I Do It For You etc)

As well as guilty pleasures can anyone come up with a song that EVERYONE likes?

Anyone not like "Hey Ya"? f'rinstance?

No woman no cry?

I don't think anyone was being music snobby earlier. It was largely agreed that Coldplay have had some classic tunes (along with some shite). My real issue with them is Chris Martin as a personality, not the music. Plus, a quick look through my record collection would reveal some "awful" stuff that I love! I even own 2 Avril Lavigne albums (although Fear n' boozing "borrowed" one in 2003, and it hasn't been seen since).

I love Hey Ya!!!!!

Hey Jude, there's a song that whilst not the best song in the world, gets everyone singing along at the end because they don't have to remember any actual words other than the title! Genuis.

Indeed, I don't think there was any snobbery going on. I may be a bit of a muso but i don't think I'm a snob by any stretch.

If music is good then I don't care if it's God Speed You! Black Emperor or Girls Aloud!

I'll admit Avril's done some quality catchy pop, I just wish she'd stop believing she's some sort of moody expression of disillusioned youth and admit she's a pretty girl that does catchy pop; it doesn't wash girl, seriously.

Doooood? She?s a pretty girl who does catchy pop, wears fishnets, has black nail polish and can do the devil-horns-salute-thingy with the best of ?em. That?s her pop star persona. They all have one.

She will never be a patch on Slutty Spice though, back in her flame-red hair and jiggerly bits heyday.

I actually on Avril's side there, I don't think it's that she didn't get it, I think it's just that he's not at all funny. I would have sat there straight faced too. Also, if someone doesn't go for one of your jokes, please please please on't push on through to the punchline anyway!

Well you see Sean I was sort of being ironic in that the muso's all hate "Popular" music, so in a round about way they have there own criteria of whats cool/worthy and therefore make that music their "Popular" music.

Do you know I havent even had a drink and I dont understand what Im talking about.:-$

    • Does anyone know what local pubs/restaurants will be open this year for Xmas serving lunch?
    • That’s interesting, Dulwich Dweller; my 70 yr old neighbour told me 2 weeks ago that he’d left work early to go and book in person (being uncomfortable with all the online & app stuff) and was explicitly told that he needed to go away and book online. He’s not the sort of person to be insistent and, like a lot of older people, a bit embarrassed at his lack of digital ability, so he left without the appointment . This is my point about inconsistency, since his experience was quite different from yours. I’m beginning think that it rather depends on who, at Reception, you speak to on day…
    • Wow, never had a disappointing meal there since they opened.. guess like every establishment, depends on the chef.. All for allowing an off day - good of you to post.. much better than chains - had awful service at Gail’s for eg..be it cake and tea or a meal.. They are so nice and accommodating..
    • "I tried Viet Flavour and was disappointed.  Their summer rolls especially were not at all good, stodgy and flavourless.  Pho-OK.  I'm hoping it will get better " Back in June I posted as above.  I am glad to report that either the first time I went the restaurant was having an off day, or they have upped their game.  I ordered the same things.  The summer roll was exactly as it should be, and had a lovely dipping sauce. The Pho was delicious.  My brother who was with me wanted to give it 10/10 but I always think you should leave room for improvement so gave it 9/10.  Staff were lovely.  I am so glad because I love Vietnamese food and now think I have a very good one just round the corner.
