Wow that's amazing.

Not sure I could do that, but I did sail (as crew) on a tall ship (large brigantine) in my late teens, and climbing up into the crows nest at the top of the mast was pretty similar in all but height - without being able to harness on the way up - and while the ship is rolling in the sea beneath you (and no solid metal spikes to climb onto - all rope).

But those guys must encounter some wind at that height.

Slightly sweaty palmns watching that.

40 years ago as a Rag Week stunt, with three Climnbing Club colleagues, I climbed a large tower crane behind Fleet Street to hang a large banner from the end of the jib. Subsequently spent 10 years rock and mountain climbing and abseiling - in those days I thought I was immortal.

Last month I abseiled 150 foot from the top of the O2 arena, for charity - straight drop with no wall or rock face. That made me realise I'm no longer as young as I was, no longer immortal and that it's very very scary do such silly things. I certainly wouldn't want to go anywhere near that tower.

BTW - what would "elf & safety" make of it - the climber's technique in clipping off / on looked pretty dodgy to me.

But he did have a guy beneath him, and I'm willing to bet that the guy below was clipped on (running a line) most of the time and he in turn was connected to that guy.

    • I know people won’t have any sympathy but the SEND challenge was brought up when taxing parents who have opted for independent school to meet a child’s SEND needs. Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
    • And they started long before midnight!
    • First mate - I wondered if I was imagining things at 4.45 this morning . Apparently not .
