Within a rather shabby local authority, Southwark's noise nuisance team does excellent and necessary work, 24/7. Officers perform the tricky and often unpleasant task of confronting bozos making a racket at all hours and in all the ways 21stc technology lets them.

We live very close to one another in SE London. If you doubt the problem, look up the national stat's and find crimes as serious as murder and suicide motivated by noise nuisance.

My worry is that, down at the town hall, the Westminster-wannabees and faceless suits, looking for big cuts, decide the noise team is a luxury that people don't need.

Thoughts?

I was thinking of calling them at the weekend for my upstairs neighbours, and indeed have used them in the past.

I don't want to have a bad feeling between me and my upstairs neighbours though (anymore than it is already), so did not call the noise team.

I don't think the team will be axed (is that a word that is pronounced 'asked' by some?!) because there is just such a high demand for it. But who knows. Make your feelings clear - there's a Nunhead and Peckham Rye Community Council meeting tomorrow at the school on Whorlton Road, SE15!

"Kowalksy...those damn bums down at City Hall have said you're off the noise team."

"But Lieutenant, We're about to bust that bozo racket racket wide open..."

"Now look I don't like it any more than you do but that's the way it is with these bums down at City Hall, so I'm pairing you with Flaherty in traffic. Now gedouttahere before I have your badge..."

I have used this service in the past and we are lucky to have such a thing in this day and age or any other for that matter. However, once upon a time when we had particularly noisy neighbours I at least got some enjoyment out of it when they were having a party on their first floor. I attached a tennis ball to some string which was attached to a stick of some sort. This allowed me to hit a decent backhand (being left handed) onto their window which made a noise without breaking the glass. They were left wondering WTF was that as I smiled to myself being able to retrieve the ball without it being seen.

"..and the DA is gonna have my ass if this doesnt get resolved TONIGHT"

"Ah fuck..Im retiring tomorrow... I dont need this shit.."

etc

etc

Went to a party in E&C once and the next door neighbour called the police. They popped around and saw that it was a bunch of people having a not-terribly-loud good time, bid us good night and left. About 10 mins later there was banging at the door - it was said neighbour complaining about the noise and that "she had called the police". "We know", I said, "They've just been around. Nice guys".

She was not a happy bunny.

Southwark also has an excellent Mediation service-link here. http://cypdirectory.southwark.gov.uk/AtoZEntry.aspx?id=45 If you want to stay on good terms but still wish to live in peace!

    • Hi Merry Christmas no joy with that Paul Hackett email thanks
    • Miss Robson is the last of the old school independent vets. All the chains are have seriously hiked their prices over the last few years which now makes pet ownership only possible for the wealthy few. Even with pet insurance -( which often excludes items or has ‘deductibles’ ) it is just so much money. A visit with some medication is often £150 - £200. The vets themselves are excellent.
    • Awful. A Google search came up with this, but will he check his office email over Christmas? Maybe worth also contacting local councillor? 'To contact Southern Housing's CEO, Paul Hackett, you can try his direct email, [email protected], or use the general contact email [email protected], as well as calling their main number, 0300 303 1066, for general inquiries or to be directed to the executive level.' Also, from the website: https://www.southernhousing.org.uk/latest-news/2025/contacting-us-over-the-festive-period   'Contacting us about an emergency? If you have an emergency outside of the above times over the festive period, such as severe flooding, an uncontainable leak, gas leak, complete electrical failure or lift breakdown, please call us on 0300 303 1066' I hope it is sorted out soon.
