concita
I hope you have not lost a lot as we did. Our windows had locks as well and were alarmed.3-4 weeks later, still no news from police and other involved organisations I was grilled by the insurance loss adjusters recently as if I were the criminal who is trying to take their money. It was very stressful. It is not just the burglary which affects your life, but all the rest as well. I am still terrified that they can come back. Our windows double glazing company told us that our glass was unbreakable and a deterrent to intruders (they still advertised this on their Website. We got a nasty reply from them, when we complained recently.Could this person seen in Oglander/ Bellenden Road be the same who has been targetting other houses in Dulwich, Honor Oak and Forest Hill.? Can anybody write to their councillors in order to stop this constant campaign on television, newspapers and other sort of media, of "gold for cash" "trade in gold" etc.? It is because of this constant advertising that thieves are breaking in people homes. Huguenot
Yes, I don't think either fencing, pawnbroking or advertising is a new business.I don't think greed is a novel invention either sadly, and I guess most of this stuff gets fenced by the equivalent of a guy down the pub. Pawnbrokers are probably too easy for police to keep an eye on.Tragically there's probably no instant fix to this. The root cause is likely to be firmly within our materialistic culture, the unequal distribution of wealth and the anonymity and mobility of our society.I'm not sure that there's much more the police can do. For every person out there who wants more CCTV, there's at least one who wants less. concita
I think you are right to say that our materialistic culture and society are the major culpits of these things, but it is up to us individually not to let the burglar fencing his stolen goods down the pub, outside the food markets, at the markets, fairs or around where he lives. If this happens, we should inform the police.Unfortunately we let this sort of crime out of control and almost reward it. We have become, as Thomas Hobbs said (and previously Plautus) the wolves to our fellow men. I this the society we all wish to live in the future, where criminals are rewarded and protected, whilst us have to work very hard for all our needs? This is what is happening. Jeremy
You can't blame a materialistic society for burglary.Greed, selfishness, and indifferent/irresponsible parenting would be higher up my list. SeanMacGabhann
You can?t blame it solely on that, but I?m willing to wager a fair amount that it plays more of a role than you care to admit Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/13797-burglaries-in-forest-hilleast-dulwich-areas/page/4/#findComment-375502 Share on other sites
Jeremy
And I'd be willing to wager (if it were possible to measure) that the correlation between materialistic society and burglary rates is pretty weak. concita
Whatever the reason is, the problem stays that ED, Honor Oak, Forest Hill, have become hot spots, despite what the statistics say. Huguenot
I'd be willing to wager that you cannot be greedy unless you have an excessive desire for either wealth or goods.Hence you can't be greedy without a materialistic society, surely? All the studies in the world illustrate, and all the bulletin boards demonstrate, that with anonymity even perfectly sane and well rounded people will lose their normal social conditioning. So materialism + anonymity = light the blue touchpaper. james84
I think it may be an even simpler reason than that- drugs. The guys commiting these thefts are doing it simply for drug money, not really any other material gain than that, just their next fix. concita
Drug is another reason too, but if you are on drugs, you are not so sophisticate in choosing the goods. Huguenot
sb, you can deduce nothing about the area from the fact that you've been burgled, any more than you can deduce that all Ginger haired people can juggle because you've seen a couple of Ginger haired jugglers. If you meet 20 people whose neighbour had been burgled, would you deduce that there have been twenty burglaries, or that they all had the same neighbour? The rules for reporting crime are the same everywhere, which means they'll have the same errors everywhere. Hence that crime statistics are a perfectly good way of comparing crime from area to area. ED is has a comparatively low crime rate. That's the truth. So much for the 'Age of Reason'.We live in a compact community of less than 5,000 people. There are 15,000 using this forum. It stands to reason that if someone gets burgled that at least 50 people on this forum either know them personally or are their neighbours. This means you going to get multiple reports of the same incidents from slightly different perspectives. It doesn't mean there are 50 different incidents. So please, calm down and think sensibly. If you refuse to believe that, it's because you think there's something to be gained by peddling fear and prejudice. I have no idea what that 'something' could possibly be. I suspect it's some kind of primeval tribal bonding thing against a common enemy, but it's pretty depressing we can't rise above it. James Barber
Hi helena handbasket,Roughly where do you and your neighbours live that were burgled?Hi sb,This thread should perhaps be retitled "burglaries in Forst Hill/East Dulwich areas/Bellenden/Peckham Rye /South Camberwell with bits of Dulwich Village" because roughly that's the areas posted about. Such an area has about 50,000 homes with 80,000 residents.
