Interesting reading some of the comments here.

Tell you what, why stop at shutting Iceland, any shop that somebody earning less than ?30k uses must be shut immediately and replaced by a deli, or perhaps a shop selling huge overpriced buggies made out of organic veg.

Come on people, if Iceland didn't make any money, it would shut. As it does, people of all social classes must be using it. Why should people be forced to shop in wall to wall William Rose and Waitrose. I kind of assumed that people who lived in East Dulwich, wouldn't be so right of centre and snobby.

No wonder this forum made it into the Guardian diary for those bonkers comments about a Waitrose during the riots.

Naked Wines are absolute crap.

I thought their wine must be OK as I had a ?50 voucher from Heals (when I bought a very cheap kettle there :)) ), so I assumed Heals had vetted them.

They sell expensive rubbish covered up by a load of flannel about social responsibility etc.. Plus they hook you in via a scheme which seems to be good value but actually isn't.

It's not often I can't force something down, but I had to throw some of their wine away because it was undrinkable.

I keep meaning to complain to Heals, but now all and sundry seem to be giving away their vouchers.

Sorry admin, off topic.

Iceland serves a purpose on the high road as not everyone can afford to buy food from M&S and Waitrose. there are enough over priced food shops on lordship lane now and something a bit more affordable in a recession is needed for those people not propped up on high salaries or banking bonuses!

Specialising in showing low budget gangster movies I hope.............................I look forward to it opening. No keystone cops though please.

I hope they splash a lick of paint on the outside though or festoon the wire protection nets with banners and flags. That would be cool. Maybe Iceland could do the same and lighten the mood of the earnest shoppers.

People who claim to dislike Iceland seem to have an Over-rated Sense of Importance.

It would seem that to them, that shopping there is below them.

Well, they need to get over it.

Unlike some other outlets, Iceland has the survived the Test of Time by providing the kind

of service that many people want.

Fox.

Brushing aside all the 'ghetto' jokes I shop in mostly all the shops in LL including Iceland

Point to note - the staff in Iceland are amazing ! They say hello , thankyou and are actually very pleasant and welcoming .

Some of the staff in the so called 'upmarket' shops on LL would be wise to visit this store and see good customer service ! Go in there and see for yourselves!

I like having Iceland there. The staff there really are lovely - the manager let my son use the staff toilet when he was dying to go the other day, then when they overheard us talking about his birthday gave us a free cake to say happy birthday. I like having at least one shop on Lordship Lane i can get a bit of a bargain, not that I don't appreciate how nice and lovely (but expensive) the other shops are.

Exaggerated sense of importance? In East Dulwich? That's outrageous.

Not to mention eggs. Got 6 large free range eggs there for a quid the other day. Iceland is a much overlooked resource on LL on my part.

I agree with all that. Iceland is very good value for a lot of things - (not the turkey twizzler kind of food that some people seem to assume is all it sells)..

Unfortunately it's often more convenient to do one large shop in one place, eg S********s, even if it turns out more expensive, because they have more of the stuff I need to stock up on regularly.

    • Just a quick post to say that my restaurant reviews column is now one year old. There are 45 reviews here* - mostly of local places (some sadly now defunct, others thriving). There are a couple of recipes from a period when I couldn't afford to eat out, a couple of moans about my health when I couldn't eat out on doctor's orders and a couple of reviews beyond our manor. But the main thing is that it is a free, useful guide to local dining and, I hope, an entertaining read. You can, of course, pay to subscribe or follow for free to get the reviews directly into your inbox as I don't want to spam EDF with every review (doctor says I'm not allowed spam anyway). The pictures below come from my two most popular reviews - Persepolis (new SE22 spin-off opening soon) and Norbert's, a great addition to East Dulwich. Please have a read and please consider subscribing. Did I mention you can subscribe for free?   https://eatsdulwich.substack.com/  *It would have been 46 but one review didn't run because the meal was so disappointing. I try not to be negative. To paraphrase Boyzone (or is it Westlife?) I said it best by saying nothing at all.
    • I'd like to recommend Andy - came out very last minute to help us with a rental property that was having plumbing issues. We couldn't source the problem but Andy was able to find it / fix it easily & took the stress out of the problem. We have booked him again to put in a new bath for us now too as we were so happy with this work.    Lovely fella - thoroughly recommend using! Andy's number is 07983 688 451
