Anyone driving as slow as 70mph should be flashed and fine. Get out of the way.

Why's that? I thought it would be a no-brainer.

Anyone support the following ideas for getting traffic moving.

1. Scrapping bus lanes.

2 If they are to be maintained allowing cars carrying more than one person to use them.

3 permitting left turns at red lights ?

Diamond lanes (for multi passenger cars) seem to work quite well in the US. So does the 'right turn at red light ' rule.

Oh dear I am one of those people who sit in the middle lane doing 70mph refusing to move! I do sometimes use the fast lane but move back into the middle when someone drives right up behind me. In all my time driving I have never known that you are not meant to stay in the middle lane and don't even rememeber learning it when doing my lessons. I thought it was only the fast lane that you don't sit at 70mph in refusing to move if someone is on your tail. I have never noticed anyone sticking to the rule of only using the middle lane for overtaking and I use the motorway frequently. Hmm so shall I start sticking to the rule....no probably not sorry!

What you do in the privacy of your own car is entirely up to you. Though you might want to remember two words... Sydenham Woods.

In which case I hope you get pulled yourself as that's potentially dangerous driving, you certainly shouldn't be, by your driving, causing another road use to have to alter their speed or direction anyway.

Lane discipline

264

You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

Much as I have my issues with the French their motorway lane discipline is excellent and the motorways flow as they should. If everyone here drove like they do (and not like Waynetta) our motorways would be a dream compared to what they are now.

A whole website for people like Waynetta - http://www.middlelanemorons.com/

She probably thinks talking on her mobile while hogging the middle lane is perfectly acceptable too.

We see these arrogant idiots all the time.

If you are so sure you are doing the right thing waynetta then go on an Institute of Advanced Driving test and see if you pass.

middle lane hogging is lazy and selfish, it smarts of territorialism (!) and forces all vehicles from behind to squeeze past with only a single lane available to legally do so.

no excuse for it and the 70 mile per hour limit excuse is hogwash, you do not use your vehicle to impose restrictions on other vehicle's options especially on a motorway at speed.

I disagree. The law imposes the speed restriction not someone driving at 70 mph. I'm amazed so many people are using the law to point out that one shouldn't use the middle lane when the inside lane is available but on the other hand imply it's impolite to those drivers who wish to break the speed limit.

Another vote for middle lane hogger == annoying twerp.

As a fairly recent test passer i am pretty amazed that you are taught nothing and have no experience of motorway driving and then suddenly have the right to go on them. Seems a bit weird to me and I think part of why we are a nation of middle lane huggers.

Like the French, Italians also have excellent lane discipline on motorways, though in the towns there appear to be no rules at all!!!

My biggest gripe are people who don't say thanks when you've pulled over in London's narrow streets to let them past. Makes my blood boil it does.

Actually thinking about it I drove in N America recently and undertaking is perfectly acceptable/legal there, mind you their cars handle like barges so swerving manoeuvres are to be avoided at all costs.

Waynetta - its strange but true. If you wish to drive on the motorway at a steady 70mph, what you need to do is drive in the left hand lane with all the lorries, old bangers, coaches, mini buses and unconfident people tootling along at 50-69mph. You need to overtake all of these on a one by one basis, returning to the inside lane as soon as you've gone past the slower vehicle, necessitating hundreds of overtakings (most dangerous manoeuvre on the motorway I'm told) in a journey of any distance. Meanwhile the middle AND outside lanes are available for all the people who want to go at over 70mph. I am with you in finding it questionable, but then the law often is an ass.

Motorway driving is not part of driving lessons or the test but rules of the motorway ARE in the highway code and everyone is supposed them to know at the time of taking a test. There was a big ad campaign in the 70's and early 80's telling drivers how to use the motorway (anyone remember that?). There's no excuse for not knowing what the rules of motorway driving are.

Tail-gating and lane bullying though is just as bad. I'm one of those drivers that always leaves the two second gap between me and the driver in front. Other drivers then come up behind me having decided I should close the gap - wtf for?...so I can die on the million to one day when something happens in front of me? So that they can get somewhere 1 second faster?

Motorways are the safest roads statistically, but pile ups always happen because drivers don't keep big enough breaking distance between them and the car in front....a distance that would make overtaking easier too as it leaves adaquate space for vehicles to change lanes.

People forget a car is just an engine sitting on a tank of highly inflamable liquid. Would we drive our cars in such risky ways if we had an unexploded bomb on the passenger seat? It's all in the head.

    • I've never got Christmas pudding. The only times I've managed to make it vaguely acceptable to people is thus: Buy a really tiny one when it's remaindered in Tesco's. They confound carbon dating, so the yellow labelled stuff at 75% off on Boxing Day will keep you going for years. Chop it up and soak it in Stones Ginger Wine and left over Scotch. Mix it in with a decent vanilla ice cream. It's like a festive Rum 'n' Raisin. Or: Stick a couple in a demijohn of Aldi vodka and serve it to guests, accompanied by 'The Party's Over' by Johnny Mathis when people simply won't leave your flat.
    • Not miserable at all! I feel the same and also want to complain to the council but not sure who or where best to aim it at? I have flagged it with our local MP and one Southwark councillor previously but only verbally when discussing other things and didn’t get anywhere other than them agreeing it was very frustrating etc. but would love to do something on paper. I think they’ve been pretty much every night for the last couple of weeks and my cat is hating it! As am I !
    • That is also a Young's pub, like The Cherry Tree. However fantastic the menu looks, you might want to ask exactly who will cook the food on the day, and how. Also, if  there is Christmas pudding on the menu, you might want to ask how that will be cooked, and whether it will look and/or taste anything like the Christmas puddings you have had in the past.
    • This reminds me of a situation a few years ago when a mate's Dad was coming down and fancied Franklin's for Christmas Day. He'd been there once, in September, and loved it. Obviously, they're far too tuned in to do it, so having looked around, £100 per head was pretty standard for fairly average pubs around here. That is ridiculous. I'd go with Penguin's idea; one of the best Christmas Day lunches I've ever had was at the Lahore Kebab House in Whitechapel. And it was BYO. After a couple of Guinness outside Franklin's, we decided £100 for four people was the absolute maximum, but it had to be done in the style of Franklin's and sourced within walking distance of The Gowlett. All the supermarkets knock themselves out on veg as a loss leader - particularly anything festive - and the Afghani lads on Rye Lane are brilliant for more esoteric stuff and spices, so it really doesn't need to be pricey. Here's what we came up with. It was considerably less than £100 for four. Bread & Butter (Lidl & Lurpak on offer at Iceland) Mersea Oysters (Sopers) Parsnip & Potato Soup ( I think they were both less than 20 pence a kilo at Morrisons) Smoked mackerel, Jerseys, watercress & radish (Sopers) Rolled turkey breast joint (£7.95 from Iceland) Roast Duck (two for £12 at Lidl) Mash  Carrots, star anise, butter emulsion. Stir-fried Brussels, bacon, chestnuts and Worcestershire sauce.(Lidl) Clementine and limoncello granita (all from Lidl) Stollen (Lidl) Stichelton, Cornish Cruncher, Stinking Bishop. (Marks & Sparks) There was a couple of lessons to learn: Don't freeze mash. It breaks down the cellular structure and ends up more like a French pomme purée. I renamed it 'Pomme Mikael Silvestre' after my favourite French centre-half cum left back and got away with it, but if you're not amongst football fans you may not be so lucky. Tasted great, looked like shit. Don't take the clementine granita out of the freezer too early, particularly if you've overdone it on the limoncello. It melts quickly and someone will suggest snorting it. The sugar really sticks your nostrils together on Boxing Day. Speaking of 'lost' Christmases past, John Lewis have hijacked Alison Limerick's 'Where Love Lives' for their new advert. Bastards. But not a bad ad.   Beansprout, I have a massive steel pot I bought from a Nigerian place on Choumert Road many years ago. It could do with a work out. I'm quite prepared to make a huge, spicy parsnip soup for anyone who fancies it and a few carols.
